strange PC issue #2 - Lythrilux - 03-23-2020
So my PC won't shut down. If I click shut down, it'll take literally forever. Eventually, the screens and peripherals will power down, but the main desktop unit will stay on - I'll have eventually forcefully turn it off by holding the physical power off button. Strangely though clicking restart instead works absolutely fine, and then after it's restarted then I can click shut down and it will shutdown normally without issue. If I accidentally click shutdown (like I have done as I am writing this post) I will be unable to put my PC to sleep or restart it).
Does anyone know what might be going on?

I'm guessing you got W10 right? It sounds like some sort of process in the background is messing with the shutdown and doesn't let the system power off because it's "busy", it could be even Windows Update or some antivirus, or maybe a Torrent client. You can try to do the same in safe mode, if the machine turns off normally, then it's most likely what i said, you could as well check in the Event Viewer if you see some unusual report in the System or Application logs.

Sounds like bitcoin mining malware that starts a mining operation when machine is idle.

There is also a bug in the Windows-Preview-version, but i'm not shure about it's status.

I had a similar issue on a laptop with installed W10. Sometimes shutting down took an hour or even two, sometimes laptop could boot on without pressing the proper button while I sleep. A problem has been solved once I downgraded laptop to W7.

You have a malware most likely. If you can't fix it, last option is to attempt backup some of your valuable files, and format or factory reset the PC.
Would be even better if you have a restore point.
(This is how I used to solve problems with on pc xD Now, I'm very careful.)
I don't think it's any hardware failure...

Not helping the OP, but Windows 7 is absolutely a good idea.
Never had any problems with it whatsoever for over 10 years of use.
Never had any malware, just some minor issues with some older games, which can be fixed with simple workarounds like disabling aero, or killing the explorer.exe from task manager during playing.
Other than issues with some older games, I'd say it has been one of the best Operation Systems ever released by Microsoft and I personally am not looking to upgrade any time soon as well.

I've run a few virus scans on my main C Drive and I'm running Malwarebytes and it hasn't detected anything. I guess I could do a deep scan of everything I have, but if I was being plauged by running Malware or a Miner the active protection would pick it up surely?
I think a background Windows process doing something seems more likely. Just not sure what it may be.
