Duchess Industries - eyvind - 03-14-2009

UPDATE: This is all obsolete now, I have decided to morph this faction into Deep Space Engineering proper. I have started a new thread for it here: http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=34975

Hello once again,

Some of you might have seen my initial intention thread and the thread very much like this one that was locked since I posted it in the wrong place. This is the right place, so I think we're good to go.

To get straight to the point: I need feedback and any help you are willing to give. Specificially:
  • 4.85 Ship and Equipment information that could be pertinent
  • Diplomatic statuses, primarily those unlawful factions hostile with, for example Rheinland
  • Thoughts on the promotion system
  • Any other feedback on the ship and equipment allowances
Anything you have to say is welcome, from both the community at large and admins.

Duchess Industries

Concept

"Duchess Industries is a Liberty conglomerate owning a large percentage of Deep Space Engineering and with operations in engineering, freight, information technology, mining, scientific research, and security."
Faction members role-play one or more employees of Duchess, usually in the form of a ship crew. Each employee -- ie. each character, not each member -- must advance up the ranks of the corporation individually. Players may do this in any way that suits them: for example, ship crews could cooperate and fly the ship where each person needs to go or they could do it separately with individual ships.
Whatever players do they must role-play it. The rule of thumb is that if players can role-play it believably they are allowed to do it. This holds true for all aspects of the faction. For example, there are plenty of limitations on the equipment characters may use but all those limitations can potentially be overruled with good roleplay.

This is the basis for some departments that might seem, and likely are, weak in terms of game-play mechanics. They are the parts of the faction that rely more heavily on role-playing rather than gaming. The Science and Research Department, for example, might involve a fair amount of flying around investigating cosmic anomalies and such, but the focus will always be on playing the role of a scientist, a scientist that might unlock a secret or two of the universe with major change as the consequence.
Most players will not find ultimate satisfaction in playing a role -- such as that of the aforementioned scientist -- without a good foundation in game mechanics. For this reason, role-playing multiple corporate employees is an available -- perhaps encouraged -- option. Since many ships -- freighters, transports, and perhaps heavier fighters -- require or benefit from larger crews, the possibility of role-playing said crew as said group of employees suits nicely.

This, however, is also not for everyone. Crew members in the form of artificial intelligences are available, as are advanced neural ship interfaces that make crews more or less obsolete. The possibilities are endless with creative role-playing.

This role-play aspect can be stressed enough but for fear that I have not, I will reiterate. With role-play, this faction can be changed in any way by any one.

Background

In 815 A.S., Lars Johansen entered the freight trade with a Universal Shipping contract. With the contract came a Mammoth transport, which he christened The Duchess Blue after his recently-deceased cat, Duchess. The contract also afforded him a lifestyle that suited him well; he settled down and performed above and beyond his contract. He did, however, have significantly higher ambitions, so later that year he took out a loan for a Whale in an attempt to boost his profits. It proved to be a highly worthwhile investment and his contract with Universal was soon upgraded and renewed. At this point, freelance freight contracting became the roadblock to his ambitions.

In 816 A.S., Lars sold his contract with Universal and used the profits to start a comparatively small freight business. Within a few short weeks some freelancers took an interest in the company and were soon hired. Three large transports and an escort now made up the company fleet and earnings were soaring. Competition from Universal and other shipping corporations now became a pressing issue. Fortunately, this obstacle coincided with profits reaching a level capable of accommodating Lars's plans.

In early 818 A.S., it was decided to integrate and expand into the mining and construction sectors of Liberty industry. Lars bought into Deep Space Engineering for several hundred million credits to, among other things, obtain a share of the exclusive construction contracts DSE held. This put Lars and the newly formed Duchess Industries in a spotlight, accused by some of foul play and praised by others of corporate genius. The DI marketing people assured the public that the former was utterly ridiculous and the latter was by all accounts a fair assessment. How white the truth truly is is uncertain, for most.

Identification

Call-sign
All ship call-signs must begin with the DI call-sign tag "DI|". The name of the ship must follow the tag with spaces replaced with underscores.

IFF Transponder
All ships must broadcast the DSE IFF signal.

ID
All ships must carry a Deep Space Engineering ID. The exception to this rule are members of the Science and Research department, who may use Researcher IDs.

Crew
All ships must carry a sufficient crew according to the below guidelines.

Certain equipment and ship systems require certain expertise. In addition, certain ships have system configurations that are simply too complicated for one person to manage alone even with all the required training. For this reason, ship types have a recommended essential crew size. Larger ships often require larger crews for non-essential duties, these are not listed as crew sizes vary greatly depending on ship roles.

Preliminary crew evaluation report must be submitted by the captain or owner of the ship in question prior to requisition of ship requiring a crew.

Ship type : Recommended crew

Light Fighters : Pilot
Heavy Fighters : Pilot and copilot
Very Heavy Fighters : Pilot and copilot
Bombers : Pilot and copilot
Freighters : Captain, technician, and engineer
Transports : Captain, technician, and engineer

Keep in mind that this is the recomended crew composition for the given ship type. All ships are different and different system configurations will necessitate dividing responsibilities among additional crew while other ships have systems that reduce the size of the required crew.

The important thing is that the ship captain or owner can validate the crew they have chosen. If the above recommended crew doesn't make sense for your ship, explain this in your crew evaluation report.

Cargo hold
All ships are required to carry general and emergency supplies of food, water, oxygen, and fuel. Other supplies are optional but recommended.

Certain ships are required to modify their holds in order to carry specialized equipment, depending on their roles:
- All Engineering ships are required to modify their holds to accomodate construction machinery and other engineering-oriented equipment.
- All Frieght ships are required to modify their holds to accomodate specialized cargo and must carry any equipment required to maintian any cargo.
- All Mining ships are reqired to modify their holds to accomodate mining machinery, prospecting tools, and other mining-oriented equipment.
- All IT ships are required to modify their holds to accomodate computational mainframes. The mainframes are modular and may be installed and swapped depending on the situation.
- All Science and Research ships are required to modify their holds to accomodate any specimens, scientific tools, and so on.
- All Security ships are required to carry security oriented equipment. The specific equipment will change depending on the situation.

Grades
Italicized texts are out-of-roleplay guidelines and notes on the promotion criteria.

Duchess Industries utilizes an employee advancement system consisting primarily of a grade ladder. New applicants begin at Grade 0 and work their way up by meeting promotion criteria. Grades are department-independent as they are intended to rank employees irrespective of department. Employees of the same grade in different departments will have advanced to a relatively identical position within the corporation, but not necessarily within each department. Grades rely mostly on objective guidelines and requirements and do not easily account for the vaguer of employee characteristics. The Taxonomy document describes the department-specific, more subjective advancement tracks.

Requirements for Grade 0
- Submitted application according to the DI Employee Application Regulations.
See the recruitment document and follow the instructions.
- Designated ship call-sign according to the DI Vehicular Identification Regulations.
Make sure your name follows the form "DI-Name_Of_Your_Ship".
- Purchased Recruit ID.
This will mark you as a faction recruit in the process of preparing your ship for full membership.

Grade 0 : Applicant
Employees applying for a job with Duchess Industries are designated Grade 0. Their applications are under review.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 1
- Application accepted.
- IFF transponder configured to squawk Deep Space Engineering signal.
- Purchased Deep Space Engineering ID.
- Ship equipped properly according to the DI Vehicular Equipment Regulations.
You don't have many choices at this early stage, but ALWAYS consider what makes most sense for your character. Don't power-play unless it's power-roleplay. You need to the follow the ship and equipment list regardless, but if you think there is an error or something that should be changed, let us know.

Grade 1 : Explorer
The first step employees must take in their DI career is that of an explorer. Being familiar with our corner of the universe is important for employees to fully understand their future corporate roles and to fill them well.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 2
- Explored Sirius.
Fly through most of Sirius. Be sure to visit all friendly Houses and at least touch the outskirts of the less hospitable ones. Observe foreign interactions and engage in interactions of your own. Find a system or two to investigate more thoroughly
- Submitted an exploration report.
Take concise notes on your trip. Include first impressions and observations. Mention people you met, stations and factions you visited, landmarks you noticed, and anything else you find remarkable.
- Passed general training.

Read through the DI documents and server rules. Then pass a short exam administered by the faction leadership.
- Preffered department chosen.
Choose the department for your main character(s). You can transfer to other departments at any time, but this will require additional work in the form of transfer criteria, essentially modified promotion criteria dependent on your current grade.
- Filed corporate feedback form.
Describe the ups and downs of your experience in the faction. Point out the truly boring parts, point out the more fun parts. Tell us what you look forward to and what you don't look forward to. Tell us what you think we should and what she shouldn't change. Simply share any and all of your thoughts on the faction.

Grade 2 : Initiated
When employees have been initiated, they will be trained in the roles of their chosen department. Employees of Grade 1 and above are required to follow all DI regulations or suffer demotion or discharge.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 3
- Submitted brief auto-biography.
Name, age, and planet of origin of your crew members. Brief descriptions as you see fit. Brief background ony our crew with a focus on main character(s) (probably the captain of your ship). If the crew of your ship consists of only one person it'll just be a bit shorter, but keep in mind that when/if you get a ship that requires a larger crew, you will need to update this information.
- Filed vehicular planning report.
Outline simply and briefly your general plan in the term of ships. Do you plan to advance to a specific ship and stick with it? Do you plan to stick to a specific class of ship throughout your career? Keep in mind that this plan can be updated or abandoned completely at any time, and you will probably decide to do so. Put a little thought into it nevertheless, it might help your character development, among other things.
- (Engineering only) Visited Norfolk Shipyard for a day of orientation with senior DSE engineers.
- (Freight only) Visited Newark Station for a day of orientation in Interspace seminars.
- (IT only) Visited Pueblo Station for a day of orientation with senior Ageira technicians.
- (Mining only) Visited Pittsburgh for a day of orientation with senior DSE miners.
- (S&R only) Visited Willard Research Station for a day of orientation with senior DI scientists.
- (Security only) Visited Fort Bush for a day of orientation with Liberty Police officers.
- Submitted report on orientation.
Do some roleplaying about it in any way you think is good. If you can get someone to roleplay it with you, great! Otherwise just pretending your character did it and telling about it in the report is good enough.
- File corporate feedback form.
We want feedback, hence this is a very repeated requirement. If there have been changes, tell us what you think about them. Update your earlier feedback. Tell us new things!

Grade 3 : Oriented
Orientation, the most fundamental and least exciting step in the direction corporate certification. The necessary evil preparing the employee for their career proper.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 4
- Filed status report on vehicular plan.
How does your plan look now? Was there something you overlooked, or perhaps it's just another reason it might be fitting? Make the changes you want to make. However the plan looks now, give us an update!
- (Engineering only) Assisted senior Engineering employee with quality control at various project sites.
- (Freight only) Assisted senior Freight employee with resupplying outlying DI assets.
- (IT only) Assisted senior IT employee with diagnostics on DI assets.
- (Mining only) Assisted senior Mining employee with prospecting various mineral deposits.
- (S&R only) Assisted senior S&R employee with research project.
- (Security only) Assisted senior Security employee with threat-assessment patrol.
- Filed corporate feedback form.

Grade 4 : Trained
Grade 2 employees have gone through all the necessary theoretical schooling required to complete departmental certification. At this point, employees need practical experience to attain Level 3 certification.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 5
- Filed collegue evaluation form.
Hopefully you have something positive to say about a fellow faction-member. Whatever you have to say, these will be kept however confidential you wish them to be. Submit to the faction leader. If you wish, you may post in whatever way you wish to the message dump in conjunction with this submittal.
- Filed status report on vehicular plan.
- (Engineering only) Completed quality control mission to various project sites.
- (Freight only)Completed supply mission.
- (IT only) Completed diagnostics mission.
- (Mining only) Completed prospecting mission.
- (S&R only) Completed research project.
- (Security only) Completed threat-assessment mission.
- Filed corporate feedback form.

Grade 5 : Certified
Employees who have attained Grade 4 are officially certified by Duchess Industries in the chosen field. Grade 4 employees are encouraged to begin taking more extensive individual initiatives.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 6
- Filed complete vehicle status report in regard to vehicular plan.
Your last official report of this kind. Describe how your plan turned out and the status of your ship at this point. Mention how you plan to proceed, if you wish. You are always encouraged to share your thought process in regard to anything in the faction, for both others' benefit and your own.
- Explored zone of interest for familiarization with the operations of other factions as well as other DI departments.
Similar, but less extensive as your first exploration. Focus on aspects that other departments are concerned with.
- Filed exploration report.
This doesn't have to be long or detailed, and you do not have to limit it to describe this specific trip. You can describe observations you have made throughout your career.
- Performed well as deputy of a DI project.
Events will be organized now and then. Occasionally they are spur-of-the-moment ideas, sometimes more elaborate and planned. These events can range anywhere from a simple mining operation to an expedition in cooperation between miltiple other factions (including pirates, perhaps) to anything anyone can think of. For this requirement, you must act as first- or second-in-command of such an event.
- File report on project.
Describe what the plan was, what actually happened, who was there (not just DI employees), who did what, and so on.
- Filed corporate feedback form.

Grade 6 : Experienced
Experienced employees are further developing their DI career, extrapolating on their training.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 7
- Chosen inter-departmental partner for mutual-mentoring program.
By now, you have likely been working more with certain members than with others. Pick someone you work with or would like to work with who is in a different department than your own.
- Earned at least three employee awards.
Show that you have been working a little above and beyond what you have to do, because now you have to.
- Tutored junior employee.
Teach a new members the ins and outs of your department and the corporation.
- Filed tutoring report.
What you covered, first impressions, and so on. Can be confidential in part or in whole, if you wish.
- Filed corporate feedback form.

Grade 7 : Veteran Employee
Employees inevitably grow exquisitely familiar with their corporate role, this usually either leads to a stagnating career or a craving for broader career development. To encourage development, veteran employees are encouraged to dip deeper into inter-departmental interactions.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 8
--CLASSIFIED--

Grade 8 : Senior Employee

Requirements for promotion to Grade 9
--CLASSIFIED--

Grade 9 : Dreamer
Eagerly taking the step beyond their corporate roles into the realm of infinite possibility, dreamers are at the center of corporate development.

Requirements for promotion to Grade 10
--CLASSIFIED--

Grade 10 : Visionary
The dreamer dreams a vision and lights a flame for its realization. The visionary stands at the inception of norm-shattering change. As the change blends into the norm, the visionary draws a last breath before being replaced by another.

Taxonomy

For the more subjective demonstrations of proficiency and employee excellence, each department head may advance department members along a separate department-specific track. This track is much shorter than the grade-scale and intended as a rough indication of employee performance within the department; it is, however, more indicative of seniority than anything else.

Duchess Industries - Vater Profit - 03-14-2009

Hello.

DSE ID for your faction is a great choice. Also the thought you put into the faction idea is clearly a great amount. Some good ideas written here and on the Wiki.

I had stopped recruiting for |Ageira| as I noticed the new guys had not made the transfer over to the new mod.
Most were very new to any role play and felt overwhelmed by Discovery and its many rules, but I think I'll begin recruiting again for |Ageira|.

Because I'm sure there are great role play possibilities between our groups in the new mod!

Good Luck and hope for your success with DI|.

Thank you, Vater!

Life as a DSE faction could be quite bland without an Ageira faction, so best of luck with |Ageira| too!

I updated the post. Mostly the Identification section.

Am I right to think that I'm not getting much feedback just because it's too much too read? Some of you backfed on my first concept thread, and I took it into consideration, but if I realized your suggestions or not would be good to know.

Massive edit, now.

I removed the entire certification system. My thinking is that leaning more heavily on the roleplay ability and common sense of faction members will likely be for the greater benefit of the faction as a whole.

RP-wise, I think this looks very promising. You provide new recruits plenty of clear-cut challenges and things to do in order to advance in ranks, something many other factions don't do. I think this would definitely be an option for new players, who aren't quite sure what and how to do in Discovery.

Further props on requiring essentials like food and water in the cargo! I try to do this whenever I'm actually RP'ing on the server, even though it sometimes gets a bit tedious. But how could it move without H-Fuel?

I'm not sure whether HFs, VHFs and Bombers require to be RP'd as two characters, it's distinctly different from how anyone else plays their fighters on the server. Plus, Freelancer Discovery type of evolution in deep space travel would propably mean, co-pilot duties like bomb targeting should already be automated at "this day and age" :)

It is a common truth, that playing Discovery requires quite a bit of reading. I know this is a list of requirements to start RP'ing Duchess personnel, but including every faction in the reputation list and enforcing Sirius-wide NPC repfix still seems a bit of a tedious option to memorize, bribe and accomplish. Why not mention just the critical factions and relations towards them, and let characters gain their personal affiliations from then on. Remember, they're not only DI personnel, they're also play-pretend people with their own lives and feelings. Plus it's easier and more RP :) Most reps are not immediately broken, so why not fix them only after they get so.

The awards seem like a great idea, but faction proposal not necessarily the place to include it. It's further RP when the faction is official, for sure.

Otherwise you seem to have all the required basics and I know you to be a level-headed person capable of leading a faction. At least I wouldn't object against making DI official, neverthless we had some co-RPing or not.

Thank you for replying, arris.

Had I not been exposed to such advancement challenges as a Lane Hacker, it is very likely that I would have fallen back on my default attitude of leniency. In fact, any competence I might have in designing and leading a faction is in large part thanks to Xoria, his deputies, and the rest of the Lane Hacker player faction.

Ironic, perhaps, that the chief influence on this Liberty corporation is the nemesis of Liberty corporations.

Also originally inspired by the Lane Hackers where we are required to carry a Hacker pilot and Cardamine ration at all times. Many of the great Discovery roleplayers carry roleplay cargo, hopefully this will help DI members from moving in that direction.

Hehe, I do think most ships have separate fuel tanks, but there's not much fun in that.

It doesn't help me much to defend what I have written, but I will explain my thinking.

Yea, that's very possible. Though I intended those crew requirements to be more like guidelines, they just seemed to be come more and more required as I worked on it. In one revision, I even had different weapon system allowances dependent on the grade and certification of the copilot, and others on that of the pilot. Much too complicated, as it turned out.

I will make those fighter crew sizes optional, perhaps just mention the possibility of a co-pilot.

This full diplomacy list is not a list of what member reputation sheets must look like. It is the diplomatic status of factions to DI as a whole. Members should try to stay more or less true to it, but of course some factions are more important than others. No one likes repfixing, and I don't plan to force members to do any unnecessary repfixing.

This diplomacy list is a reference both for other factions and for DI members. If a DI member encounters another faction, it is more important for them to know what DI's relation is with that faction than what their repsheet says. If their repsheet is horrifically contradictory to DI's relation, and the character doesn't have any IC reason for it, then they should fix it.

I haven't been able to decide, yet, if there should be any reputation requirements for advancement.

I don't plan to include all of this information in the faction proposal. I am simply including more information in this thread in order to recieve feedback on the big picture. There is always the possibility that my thinking is flawed and that I have pieced something together in a way that makes no sense. It is also possible that it wouldn't be detectable by anyone if I didn't include this much information.

I appreciate the vote of confidence!

Well, that was all the nitpicking I could think of now and your reply didn't give me a chance to make up any more, though just a quick note on this one:

I think it should be "enforced", but bypassable through good RP. You don't advance well unless you're connected and conforming within corporations of today either. Much less so if the corporations actually would have the possibility to kill you on sight, or making your "sightseeing vacation at Hawaii" prove out to be a nice little one-way trip to Malta.

Then again, every now and then a guy pops up, whose qualities far exceed the problems he creates, and there you have your own Nigel Kennedy. I guess the RP capabilities of a player should determine how much freedom he is allowed, something you only see with time.

PS. Thanks for the tip, I truly never thought that you might need the pilot in addition to the food, water and oxygen.

Hmm, the RP and concept is great Eyvind

Best of luck, this will be interesting to see put into practice

Aye, adherence to DI roleplay will of course be enforced, preferably in character. I suppose it won't need to be part of the advancement system, since everyone should be roleplaying decently. Subjective leniency can always be given to newer players.

It's true. I will simply have to make sure that none of the DI rules are limiting factors in member roleplay.

Thank you, Vape.

It sounds as if this is about ready. I'll sort out all the paperwork and funds I need to buy DSE tomorrow, then I can apply for officialness.
