Chapter 1: Childhood
Part 1: An Underlying Danger

Christopher was born in 792 A.S. on the far edges of the universe, away from civilization. Life on Freeport 6 was not pleasant; due to the Tau-29's strategic location connecting Kusari with the rest of the Tau systems, pirate activity was thriving. There were many known pirate bases in the sector, however police presence was scarce; it's the Border worlds after all. The transports going in and out of Freeport 6 where constantly raided by pirate forces, and there was something that needed to be done about this. There were rumors being told of transports never showing up on their destinations, rumors talking about slavery; pilots that were never to be seen again. Fortunately, the station features a Biodome, so life on it is largely self-sufficient. However that does not mean it was built to survive under these circumstances...

Christopher grew up in an poor environment, his parents being capable fighter pilots working as part-time escorts for the mentioned cargo convoys; minimum wage, of course. Sometimes contractors wouldn't even pay them upon safely arriving to their destinations. Christopher's early years in life were harsh; food was scarce and his parents had to often give up their own rations to keep him alive. As Christopher grew up he slowly realized how harsh life for his family was all those years and how harsh it will continue being if they remain on this station.

"Father... can't you see that this life isn't going to get us anywhere? I..." Christopher sighs "it's only a matter of time before you run into an ambush that you will not manage to get out of. We have to leave this place father."

His father, a very old-looking man for his age; his face being a portrait of his tiresome life, looking away and avoiding conversation about the subject every time his 12 year old son tries to confront him.

Every week of Christopher's life after he started realizing that his family is doomed went by painfully slow, he had to start working on the station's engine rooms at this young age to bring at least some extra money back home. The engineers had him do ridiculous tasks and his days went by cleaning up pipes and mopping floors. Every evening he'd return to his family's quarters and come into his parents having an argument about the same thing... over.. and over.

"I told you there won't be any god damned transports anymore at some point. What did you think; that the Exports would continue sending people out here to bloody risk their lives? Didn't you know this moment will come one day?" His mother is heard shouting at her husband, as he remains quiet and looks down on the metallic floor.

Christopher runs into his room and remains there until he falls asleep.

Tonight, however, felt... different. He overheard a conversation between an engineer and a worker, just a few hours ago. The conversation echoes in his mind ever since;

The engineers chuckles in disapproval "You really heard that? Transports aren't coming our way because of the increased pirate activity? That's some fat gibberish if I've ever heard any, pirate activity has been like this for the past several decades, how much worse can it get?"

"I don't know, Lucas, but I've heard a lot of people looking to evacuate the station... they say big ships are coming our way. People have gone crazy man, they've been paying double fo-" The man pauses as he notices Chris looking at them "Hey, what's ya business here you rat? Get back to work." he shouts and Chris continues along mopping the lower decks.

Christopher didn't mention anything to his parents, but he has a bad feeling about this.

Another week of the same everyday life goes by, Christopher was made to work weekends now, which keeps him exhausted everyday. Today, however, it was told an accident took place in the engine compartment and he was called to stay home. The day was mostly eventful... until-

A large explosion can be heard throughout the entire station. Christopher and his parents get up and open the door to the main deck; what their eyes see, they cannot believe. Multiple capital-sized ships can be identified outside.
"The dome! Look!" says his mother as she points to the dome on the very left of the large deck windows. It was shot, presumably by the ships outside the station. Things slowly start to get a lot more dramatic; the hostile ships open fire, but this time their targets are the station's defense systems. One by one the station's turrets are shot down and soon the station is left defenseless.

Chaos has taken over the station's main deck, the poorest among the families aboard the station are terrified, rushing around trying to grab their belongings... what do they seek; perhaps a second chance, a new beginning.. but it is too late now. The wealthiest among the families were informed by their connections that a threat is approaching, and headed to the evacuation ships in a more organised manner. Huge sums of money were given by them to make sure there will be seats available on the evacuation ships when the time comes.

Christopher looks around frightened and then turns to his parents "Mom, what are we going to do?" his parents freeze at their son's question. They don't.. know
"We.. we will head inside and... yes... we will wait for help Chris, I'm sure someone has signaled for help, this is a very busy station... someone will notice. Come on, let's head inside" his father replies while stuttering, trying to keep himself calm for Christopher's sake. He doesn't believe a single word of what he just said; "There won't be any help arriving... there.. won't... be... Nobody cares about us" he thinks as he rushes inside with his family.

The family spent the next few hours in their compartment; Christopher is sitting at a chair looking at his parents, they are just near the windows and observing what is going on outside.

"Quick Chris, hide!" His father tells him trying to whisper. What seems like the shadow of a person can be seen approaching in the dim lights of the ship's hallways; the sounds of the person's metal boots echoing in the empty deck, slow, steady, determined. The man walks up to the center of the deck and slowly turns his head to look around him; in front of him are the quarters of all the families that haven't managed to escape this now-prison. The man cannot physically see anyone inside any quarters, yet somehow he knows the place is filled with civilians. A soldier, probably lower ranked than him seems to be rushing towards him; fully armed. "Commander, our scanners are still picking up massive heat signatures coming from the station, the majority of the station's population is still aboard, sir."

The man turns towards the soldier, takes a few steps in the same direction he came from and then comes to a stop hearing the soldier talking to him once more. "What should we do with the... people.. I mentioned.. sir?"The soldier says while slightly stuttering, possibly in fear. "Execute them. All. We have no time for prisoners." The man's footsteps echo once more and slowly fade away as he leaves the quarters. The soldier takes a glance around him, he sees the quarters. "There's... so many people here.. I... I'm sorry..." He says to himself as he looks straight out the window; three destroyers are facing the station. The soldier's hands tremble, his knees feel weak. He starts walking the same way back, a lot slower this time, seeing him one would assume he is heavily wounded, but the man has no sign of physical injuries on him. The sound of the large metal deck door is heard colliding with the floor, followed by the sound of a key-card and a code being inserted. The soldier leaves; the main deck is sealed. The commander is just outside the large door waiting for him. "Good job Lieutenant, you proved yourself today." The commander tells him in a deep, cold voice. And picks up his radio. "This is the commander speaking, all personnel aboard the station have been safely evacuated to our shuttles, the station is clear of civilians. You may fire upon the main decks when ready." He turns off his radio. "Sir, wait. There's people in there, how can you-" The Lieutenant is cut short by the man "He could be hiding in there Marcus god damn you. Are you gonna search every single part of that place for him? Remember the signal we followed, remember. Your. Mission." Marcus is frightened by the man's response, he looks down and keeps walking towards their frigate.

"Did they just... leave?" Christopher asks his parents. A few moments later, and before his parents can even respond, an energy beam can be seen being emitted from each of the 3 destroyers. The effect is too bright to even look up. "What is that dad? It's beautiful!" Not 5 seconds later, all the family saw was a very bright light followed by darkness, and the sound of thousands of screams being silenced in an instant.

Christopher's eyes open, he is dizzy and his vision is blurry. Everything around him looks...white; almost too white. It's hard for him to check out his surroundings as the lights on the ceiling are blinding him. "Mom...? Dad..? Am I... Is this a dre-"

Chapter 1: Childhood
Part 2: First Contact

A few hours go by and Christopher finally wakes up. His eyes slowly open and he takes a look at his surroundings. "That.. Doesn't look like home" He thinks. It looks more like a prison cell rather than a home. After a few seconds he is fully awoken, his father's there with him too, still passed out.

"Dad.. Dad!! Dad.. Please wake up" Christopher says as he gets closer to his father. To his surprise, almost as if he heard him, his father opens his eyes. Seemingly more aware of the situation than his son, he knows that they are in danger. "Dad.. Where's... Mom?" Christopher asks while looking around for his mother. "She.. We will talk about that later Chris, quickly, look around for anything we can use as a weapon" He replies to his son, who doesn't understand why he needs to do that "Dad..? Why do I need to-" The boy is cut short by a pair of footsteps that can be heard from outside the room which they're in. Father quickly signals Chris to act like he is asleep and he does the same. A few seconds later, the bulk door opens completely in one motion, making a terrible screeching sound, deeming it known to the family that the door is rusty, old and not kept in a good condition. "Aye they still asleep back here matey, ya hit 'em too hard! Turn on the bloody engines and let's get outta here!" A person's voice echoes in the large metal walls of the room, referring to someone, letting the family know that they are on a ship, possibly on it's cargo bay, and are currently being transported somewhere.

The cargo bay door is closed and locked. "Christopher, come here" his dad whispers "look, I can't keep you in the dark, I think it's only right if you are aware of the situation" he tells him, visibly concerned "Dad? What is it?" the boy replies worried, to which his father responds "We and some other families survived the blast, you and your mother were passed out.. Or... So I thought. Your mother didn't survive the blast Chris.. Soon thereafter some weird looking people came looking for survivors, I thought... I thought they were rescuers, it seems they weren't. They're smugglers Chris, and we are aboard one of their ships right now. We are on the ship's cargo bay. Chris.. I don't know what will follow, but I need you to be strong. And don't ever-" his father is cut short by the cargo bay being unlocked and opened once more, their talk prevented them from hearing the footsteps of the man this time. "Welcome aboard LNS-Heaven gentlemen!" he says in a sarcastic manner when he notices the father and son "Come! Let us guide you around!" he then proceeds to handcuff them, no resistance is shown by any of the two as there is a second man right at the now open bay door pointing a gun at them. The man takes them to the ship's cockpit and let's them have a look out the window "See this?" he says as he points to an asteroid base where the ship is clearly headed "That'll be your new home gentlemen! A new life awaits, full of... Adventures!!" he continues saying while laughing "Now back to your little room you go, would be a shame if you got hurt roaming around the ship now wouldn't it be?"

The man takes them back to the cargo bay, but doesn't remove their handcuffs. He tells the father to look towards the wall, and he strikes him with his weapon's stock, knocking him out "What did you do.. you monster!?" Christopher shouts at the man, who strikes him too. With both the father and son knocked out in the cargo bay, the man closes the door and leaves while chuckling. "Sweet dreams." He says as he walks away

Christopher wakes up in a cell, handcuffed, all alone. He gets up from the ground that he was laying at and looks through the bars at his surroundings. He's in some sort of open cavity filled with similar cells, it's cold and noisy. "Help! Help!" He screams to no result, and soon gives up. Just a few minutes go by and a weird looking man, possibly drunk, maybe on drugs, opens his cell door and grabs him by the arms, asking him to follow.

"Welcome. Hehe, let me guide you to the place you'll be spending the rest of your life." the man says as he heads towards a tunnel leading to a different cavity. Chris sees lot's of people on multiple levels beneath him, with pickaxes in their hands, digging while chained, the man laughs "Ain't it beautiful boy? The sound of hundreds of pickaxes hitting rock. Ahhhh... Anyway. You'll be working right over there" he says as he's pointing to a location in the cavity. When they reach the location he cuffs one of Chris's feet on a rock and hands him a pickaxe as he frees his hands "Have fun, boy. Don't chill around too much or he might get mad" he says as he looks at another weird looking man nearby, holding what looks like a whip. He laughs and leaves Christopher there.

The next year of Chris' life goes by painfully. The water and food he is being given isn't enough to feed a cat, he is malnourished, and he hasn't seen his dad for the past year. The scars on his body inflicted by the whip cause him more pain everyday, and he barely gets any sleep at nights.

One night, the same man he saw one year ago, wakes him up.

"Get up you animal. You're being moved" he shouts. Christopher gets up, his weak legs can barely keep his body upright at this point. The man puts a bag on his head and drags him to what sounds like a ship firing it's engines. He is once again thrown in a room and the bag is taken off his head. The light blinds his eyes for a few seconds, but he quickly realizes he's on a ship's cargo bay once again. "I'll miss ya boy. I hope they treat you well where you're headed!" he tells Chris in a sarcastic manner as he locks him in the ship's cargo bay and leaves. The boy can hear the ship leaving the base, he is exhausted and falls asleep without even realizing.

Chris' nap is cut short by a turbulence aboard the ship. He wakes up in question and takes a long around the cargo bay. He notices that this ship's bay has a small reinforced window which he immediately rushes to, looking outside. Christopher sees a ship. The ship remains stationary for a few minutes, he assumes that the two pilots are communicating over their radios, though he does not know what they are talking about. He can't even tell if that is a ship that's here to rescue him or another smuggler, possibly in an argument with the pilot of the ship he's on.

A few seconds later, his question is answered. Christopher sees the ship outside the window fire some sort of projectile aimed at the ship he's aboard. "Is this... the end..? Is it really going to end like thi-" His thoughts are cut short by the projectile coming into contact with the ship. He sees a bright flash, and the explosion knocks the poor boy unconscious.

Chapter 2: Teenage Years
A new beginning

The boy wakes up feeling out of place, his eyes slowly open and he can quickly tell that he is in a hospital room. He feels weak, and can barely move his body. Looking downwards he realizes there's one syringe in each of his arms. A lady is sitting near the bed he's on. "Oh, you are awake. Thank god you are awake, I was afraid you would never wake up from your comma. You must feel lost." She tells the boy with a very sweet and loving tone. "Where... Have you seen my father?" Christopher asks the lady, and she looks back at him confused. "There was no one else on the ship's cargo hold.. And we never got the chance to interrogate the ship's pilot as he was killed in the crash. I'm... sorry about your father. She responds. Christopher's eyes fill with tears as he stutters. "No... he.. He. It can't be. He's not dead. I will find him... He... can't.. be.. The boy faints and a tear runs down the lady's cheek I can't just leave him like that... He seems determined... Hmm.. He is young, probably inexperienced in flying... but I guess I can train him. He probably has no one left to care for him, I... I can't leave him. She thinks as she exits the room.

A few hours go by, and the kind lady visits Christopher's room once again. She walks in and sees the boy still knocked out, so she takes a seat near the bed. She can tell that the boy has been harassed a lot and lived a painful life, just judging by his arms. The boy looks exhausted, malnourished, she can only imagine the things those scums have done to him.

Christopher slowly wakes up again, opening his eyes to look at the lady Hey... thank you.. for rescuing me.. I'm sorry about earlier. My name's Christopher. He tells her while looking into her eyes. The lady is impressed by how calm the boy is this time, she smiles. Don't be, it is expected. You are calm now and that's all that matters!. Also it's very nice to meet you Christopher, I am Captain Felicia." The boy looks at her, visibly confused. "Captain? A Captain came to rescue me? I thought all Captains did was sit in their offices and let the lower ranking officers do their own work for them." He replies to her in a very innocent and childish manner. Felicia laughs "No you silly. That's not what Captains do, I don't know who told you that but whoever it is needs a good update! We fly around and intercept smugglers and pirates as much as all other ranks do. We do have more paperwork to file, but that doesn't mean you won't see us in space!" She tells him calmly and with much care on her voice. "I will train you, Christopher. After some thought in the past hours I decided I cannot leave you like this. I will make an amazing pilot out of you, and we will search for your father together!" She follows up with a smile on her face. The boy seems very happy to hear her say that. "But now you have to get back to sleep, you need to get a lot of rest, Chris. We will speak again tomorrow! Goodnight." She waves as she leaves the room and turns off the lights, leaving the boy to sleep.

Christopher spends the next few days giving Captain Felicia information about his past life. Felicia was asking countless questions about the people who took him, and if Christopher had any clue where they had taken him. The two get really close, and Felicia tells him everything about the place they are in, Liberty. She guides him around her astonishing ship and tells him stories about her past life.

"So... what exactly do you do in your work when you aren't filing papers Felicia?" The boy asks. "The Navy is always busy Chris, we make sure Liberty is safe from any threat, foreign or domestic. We oversee the cargo convoys with the Liberty Police and punish those who aren't abiding to the law. Occasionally we assist research teams salvage ships and perhaps rescue survivors, deep in pirate territory. That's how we found the ship carrying you. We were on the middle of a search and rescue mission and then our scanners picked up a hostile ship. Unfortunately the pilot did not respond to any communications and instead just stopped his vessel and remained silent, so.. we did what we had to." Felicia's tone seems concerned, and slightly sad "Hey.. don't worry about it. You did what you had to! You rescued me and that is all that matters Felicia." Christopher says as he hugs Felicia.

The next few years of Christopher's life go by smoothly; life is finally smiling at him. With his father on his mind everyday Christopher practices with Felicia as often as they can and sets a goal to become a great and respected pilot, much like his father, so that one day he can find him and rescue him. By the time Christopher reached the age of 17 he begun participating in the investigations that were taking place for the past years to find his father. The results of the research were fruitless, most investigation parties had quite searching by then as they assumed the father was dead, but Christopher wasn't going to give up. With Felicia's support he kept scouting the most dangerous places for any clues as to his father's whereabouts. One day, Felicia and her crew ran into another smuggler transporting slaves, who was eventually captured after giving a tough fight.

"What do you want from me? I told you everything I knew. You have the damned people rescued and the ship scrapped, just put me into jail and leave me the hell alone." Felicia has been asking questions to this man for the past few hours, pending Christopher's return to base after her hail. She leaves the man alone in the interrogation chamber and waits outside.

Christopher enters the building, and salutes Felicia before hugging her. The two of them have gotten even more closer in the past years. "Is he in there?" Chris asks in a concerned manner "Yeah.. but be wary, he's not exactly willing to answer any more questions." Felicia replies Don't worry, I'll be pretty straight forward with him.

Christopher enters the interrogation chamber and in it he sees the man. Christopher walks towards him and stands still in front of him for a few seconds. "What is it now? More damned questions? I told your friend there I'm si-" The man is cut short by Christopher slapping him and getting a tight grip around his neck "Listen here bastard, you'll either cooperate or you''ll have me do things to you I don't even want to imagine, in either case the outcome is the same. You answering every single question I have to ask you, and then being sent to the cell you deserve to spend the rest of your life in, the choice is yours." He lets go of the mans neck and he replies while heavily breathing "Okay.. okay.. I'll help you.. please, I just want to live." The man replies while out of breath "I am pleased to hear that." Christopher replies, he then takes a seat and proceeds with the questions.

"You were caught transporting slaves. Where did you get the slaves from? What base in which system?| Christopher begins with his first question. "I. I picked up the slaves from an.. asteroid base. It was somewhere in California." The man replies. "Somewhere in California..? How about you be a little more specific." Christopher is looking directly at the man with an angry look on his face "Ugh.. Sorry.. Yes. It was Alcatraz. Alcatraz Depot in California." Christopher seems pleased with the man's answer. "How many more slaves were at that base?" He goes on to ask the man the next question. "I... I don't know.. Ho..How would I? It's ... It's a lot of slaves sir.. I.. I can't tell how many.." The words coming out of the man's mouth are barely recognizable due to the stuttering. Christopher has heard enough. He gets up and walks towards the door. "I'm done with him. Do with him as you please." He closes the door behind him and walks away, with Felicia right behind him.

Christopher and Felicia headed to their ships and undocked from the base to head to California and locate that pirate base the man was referring to. After several hours of research the base was spotted, and soon later a large Navy fleet was present at the location. The people aboard the base were smart enough to not show any resistance and let the Navy ships dock on the bases hangars. Lot's of soldiers armed to the teeth with cutting edge weaponry emerged from the docked ships, and investigations aboard the base begun. After roughly a few minutes a large cavity was found deep inside the base. Seeing the cavity, Christopher had flashbacks of his former life as a slave and a tear went down his cheek. The sides of the cavity were full of prison cells, inside which were people. All seemingly malnourished and exhausted.

"Search every corner of this cave. I want everybody inside here rescued and taken back to base." Felicia orders her men, while she along with Christopher join the search.

Just after a few minutes of searching, Christopher comes across a cell with a man who is half knocked out in it. The man looks familiar.. Chris tries to open the gate, but it's stuck in position. "Hey, I need a laser cutter here, let's get this door open." A cutting crew is in position a few minutes later and begin cutting the door open.

The sound of the metal door hitting the ground echoes in the cave systems as Christopher slowly walks inside the cell, keeping his head down so as to not hit it on the cell's ceiling. Could it... be..? He thinks as he get's closer to the man.
