Research on the Edge for the Edge
//BEGINNING AUDIO PLAYBACK//

At over 400 years old the Stagecoach has had many owners in her long and storied life. From her original commissioning to assist in the exploration of what would eventually become the Ontaro System, she would initially fade from public view as she was relegated to Liberty’s backwater transport network before vanishing entirely in late 650 a.s. Her story picks up again in 821 a.s. Under the command of Steve Squigs, providing miners a connection back to the Core of Liberty from the Humboldt system. After the Great Humboldt Silver Rush came to an end in 824 a.s. The Stagecoach was mothballed and left in a parking orbit above Planet Cannish ready and willing to serve when she was next called upon. Orbital bought her from the Congress in the middle of 827 a.s. and The Stagecoach returned to active service with the assistance of Deep Space Engineering. Representing Orbitals first serious foray into reliable Edge World Transportation. In 829 a.s. The Stagecoach was sold to Starlight Research Consortium and retrofitted as a deep space research and scientific laboratory.

"test test" he cleared his throat loudly "While we still aren't fully yet underway habits are best formed early. I spent today on Syracuse Station looking over the various medical facilities and equipment available for purchase. Before returning to Baltimore Shipyard. The reactor replacement is proceeding on schedule, no doubt thanks to the personal attention of DSE's President Burke. Additionally it looks like The Stagecoach has caught the attention of Orbitals own President as well. As we managed to make the latest addition of the Wanderlust. With being confined to a shuttle traveling across New York today I was able to catch up on a backlog of work along with sending out various communications. Who would have thought being a ship-master would have necessitated quite so much paperwork."

"It is August 1st, 1:04 hours ship-time." His voice was raspy, almost if he had smoked several cigars every day of his rather long life. "I have recently been pulled from retirement to assist James with this." his voice changed to a slightly more mocking tone. "project of his." he lapsed into what sounded like an unhappy silence. "I'm Eighty Two! I should be enjoying a quiet life on some sun soaked island somewhere. Not jumping back in to full-time work. And speaking of work right out of the gate, while we were just conducting pre-flight checks we had an Outcast appear on the radar. Oddly enough, despite my history telling my otherwise, they seemed more interested in talking than anything else."

"It is August 2nd, 4:32 hours ship-time." there was a loud yawn "So much for a normal sleep cycle. Our first flight to Delta was uneventful. But it looks like we'll be moored to the station at least a day longer than planned." after a slight pause he continued. "I was briefed to the nature of the edge before. But I suppose I wasn't ready for how quickly the systems politics can envelope you. James certainly undersold it. Between the threats, accusations, and the evidence I can tell we're going to need to be on our toes if we want this venture last. "

"Speaking of the venture. We only had a few hundred aboard on their way to stops along our route to 11. And another 3 dozen from the Freeport bound for Baffin. I know there is a lot of demand for flights to Freeport 9, but it looks like Delta may be a step to far. We had planned on making a direct return. But I believe we'll make a longer trip of it with a bit of a side step to Omega 49 to see about drumming up some more passengers."

"It is August 8th, 01:48 hours ship-time." after a slight pause he continued. "I often forget that not everywhere is a paradise. I forget about the poor, the destitute" after a another pause he continued. "The Slaves."

"Slavery is certainly the scourge of the sector. Not that I am in a position to do anything about it. Except tonight apparently. While on our last leg into Baffin we came across a rather large group of Outcasts. While negotiating safe passage. Thanks in no small part to my tremendous experience. An offer floated across the radio, a slaver with over 2,700 unwillingly condemned wanted a single bottle of Vodka in exchange for a single life. Of course I accepted. While there wasn't a doubt in my mind I would have preferred to save them all I am but a single man."

"After parting ways with the Outcast group a message was sent out to the local Zoners in Baffin. No doubt they are in a better position to help this wayward individual than my own inadequate medical facilities will be able to provide."

"It is September 1st, 02:50 hours ship-time." He wheezed and started hacking and coughing quite heavily. He cleared he throat loudly. "Probably should have given up smoking sooner rather than later."

"At any rate Dylan's training is coming along quite nicely. As of late I've had him taking up more of the day to day events, morning announcements, dinner speeches and the like." There was another pause as he continued to cough. "I think within a year, maybe sooner he'll be ready. He certainly is adventurous enough. I've got an appointment with that new Doctor of ours in the morning. Hopefully he'll give me something for this cough."

"My Eris above, well after recovering the ships records after the purchase from Orbital I've finally somewhat settled in." a glass with ice could be heard clinking in the background softly. "Ah, thats the ticket." there was some more clinking followed by an appreciative sigh. "Sure was swell of them to leave the bar fully stocked. I pretty much moved directly into one of the penthouse suites spread across decks two and three. Besides general renovations they're also tied up renovating the directly adjoining penthouse turning it into my personal lab and office." again a pause, the sound of ice more noticeable this time. "I've also put out a work order with some old friends. While I can move most of my workspace over to the Stagecoach myself. Certain things are slightly, well more than slightly beyond the scope of what I can achieve on my own."

"It's a little before 2 am ship time, while locally on Canaria its a balmy 18 degrees out and I think a little after solar noon. We've been on the surface for a little over 20 hours now. While much of the supplies we're taking aboard are relatively light in nature. There are a few key components that are especially delicate." the sound of a passing hover lift momentarily cut him off. "After everything is secured we'll be making our way to 5, then 9, 11, and what I'm not particularly looking forward to. Rarotonga." there was another lift, another pause. "While at Rarotonga we'll over see the implementation of a station telescope array in addtion to the various personnel transfers. With any luck it will be a quiet trip."
