Election Results, Hacker Resigns, Melbourne Replaced
NEW LONDON - Parliamentary snap elections were held in Bretonia this weekend. The turnout is estimated at about 62.42%. Some irregularities were recorded, but no more than considered ordinary. These are the results:

Crown Royalist Party: 161 seats
Whig Party: 164 seats
Liberal Party: 128 seats
Social Democratic Federation: 136 seats
Green Front: 32 seats
Independent: 28 seats
Vacant: 2 seats (Lanzarote Station and Freeport 1)

The newly elected MPs met in the Parliament following the elections. Prime Minister James Hacker opened the session with a letter of congratulation to the Whig Party, who won most seats, which he ended announcing his resignation. "I had full confidence in the loyalty of the [Crown Royalist] Party, but it seems I was mistaken", said Hacker, with a hidden jab against the Whigs. "I could have potentially considered a coalition, or even a reunification with the Whigs, but they insisted it could only happen under Whig leadership. My conscience cannot bear such a degradation of the original, true Royalists, hence the honourable option was to resign", Hacker told us. He said that he would retire from politics for now, but stressed that it would only be temporary and that he would be willing to return when Bretonia needs his service again. Lady Sarah Mountbatten was elected as the new party leader, with Hacker's blessing.

Dr Saul Attenborough, an expert on political animals from the University of Cambridge, claims that Hacker's resignation was "indeed honourable, but it was not meant to save the party's dignity". He concluded: "What would have followed is an almost unanimous, without the Royalists themselves, vote of no confidence against the prime minister, and the dignity that he has saved was his own."

Meanwhile, despite their victory, or precisely because of it, the Whigs have had a change of programme and leadership. Because they were the newest player on Bretonia's political stage, they were initially doubtful of success, but it seems that something new was precisely what Bretonia needed, a middle ground between the costly ambitions of the Royalists and the unorthodox policies of the SDF and the Liberals coalition. MP Wesley Melbourne, the former party leader, was replaced by the party because of his unwillingness to form a coalition with anyone. Melbourne earlier said: "Those who crave for power enough to sell their core values had better not have it". The Whigs do have the most seats as an individual party, but their advantage is only by three seats and could easily be disputed by a coalition, or or by a usually disregardable fifth column within the Whigs themselves.

Party members believe the Whigs now have a promising chance to form a government, which they should not miss. They have chosen MP Elizabeth Hall as their new leader, who has also replaced Harriet Greene as MP for Port Jackson. She told us that she would resign as Governor-General of Exeter when we asked her how can the Constitution allow her to combine that function with also being an MP for a constituency on Exeter. However, when we asked her about her plans to form a government, she told us it was "very hush-hush" and would say no more.

The Whigs might have overestimated their victory, because the Social Democratic Federation and the Liberal Party have officially formed a coalition. This means that they now have 264 seats in total, exactly 100 more than the Whigs. MP Robert Bailey, leader of the Federalists and of the coalition, told us he was confident that his party can form a government, as he described it, "the first Non-Royalist government in decades". To cement their already strong position, the SDF-LP coalition has approached the Greens, eager to let them join as well. This may be the best chance to be part of a government the Greens will ever get, but as Bailey told us, "it is imperative that they accept the colonisation of Carlisle if they want in".

The Parliament will convene again on Wednesday to elect a new prime minister and form a new government. The BBC will continue to cover this subject, stay tuned.
