The Union was coming together. Again. Finally, coming together. Michelle had pulled herself out of whatever hole she'd dug, and punched in the right numbers. Collected one Sophie Richthofen, kidnapper and torturer; one Cain Sheppard, smuggler, known slaver; Hank Morgan, who knew how to handle himself, thank you.
Even...new people were coming in. And not through the old system. Jamal was out of the picture. Or in the background. Possibly holding strings, but not quite so many. In the new system, people joined up. Sophie met these people as did Michelle, and Cain, dressed in finery or lurking on a pilot's viewscreen, taught them the ropes. It was like school. Almost.
People in a position to join the union often hadn't gone up through regular school. Almost never reached universities. But the union was a group, and it was inducting new members, and Sophie was more than willing to play the part. Big Sister, Ro Sister, Secret Mistress...She looked after the lives of some, vetted others, evaluated still more, and she adored the roll. She took to the conservative dress, the studious look, the superior glances. So when Sophie spoke, everyone knew.
"Hi! I'm Sophie! And I'm your Big! Stick with me...and I'll try and keep you alive."
