**We Take Derek Evans** - Wilde.Vereinigt - 03-23-2009 "I suppose this is the way it has to be", I thought, as I sat in the cramped escape pod. I felt the slow thrum of the starship as it was cruising toward its destination, carrying me to the end. "Well, an end I suppose." I whispered as I plucked the small Interspace Commerce insignia off my jumpsuit and put it in the pocket... "Congratulations, Captain Evans... not much of course, although you are in control of one of the many ships under Interspace Commerce." said the man behind the desk, with a face-splitting smile. "Thank you.. and its not that bad." I replied, taking a seat and peering at the slightly overweight man. "True, you do recieve increased pay but you are responsible for the shipment." "Hmm, so, whats my first shipment? Hopefully not too much eh?" "Ah yes.. you'll be taking passengers to Planet New Berlin. Not much of a hassle as its only a few systems away. From there, you'll be passing through the Omegas back to Bretonia. Sorry your first run isn't back through Liberty, I know you wanted to get a few days rest and show off that Captain's rank to your relatives but with the Embargo and all, its not good business." "Don't worry about it.. I can always get a break and this should be a simple run." "Alright, well good luck to you Captain!" Two days later, I squinted my eyes as the explosion from the once-living pirate flashed in the viewport. "This is Captain Evans. The pirate has been destroyed thanks to the local enforcement. Lets continue this trip shall we? Akers, continue our course and engage cruise. Oh and please send a thanks to the law." "Cruise engines are activated and message is sent." Akers, the middle-aged man behind the console replied. I turned back and walked toward my private room and away from the fiasco on the bridge. Sitting down on my bed and taking a small electronic pad off the desk, I began composing a letter: "Well, an interesting day today.. a pirate finally showed up for once during one of these runs. Dang.. if those police didn't respond, my crew and I, along with the goods wouldn't be here. I will be making a quick trip back into Liberty after this run.. seems this Embargo doesn't allow for any material goods to be transported so we'll have to abide by the rules unless we wanna get shot at. Anyways, I'm sure the crew wouldn't mind seeing their families and friends again so guessing I'm doing them a favor." --End Recording-- I sighed as I felt the small tremor of the ship beginning its jump into the next adjacent system through the jump gate. Seeing the bridge at its quiet state through the small window, I laid down and slept... The small and insignificant rocks in the Tau 23 asteroid field bounced off lazily against the shields of the compact trading vessel. Akers whistled and said, "Heh, not much to see around here eh, Captain? What kind of run is this anyways?" "Hmm, well it says here that this is just a quick supply run to this jumpgate construction site.. nothing too major it seems." I replied. "Yea, yea, but why would they send us out here?" he shot back. "Probably because we were the only ones in this area.. why so glum?" "Eh, these asteroids are a pain and this is pirate territory.. these patrols will hold 'em off but really? Lets be realistic here." "Right, right. I'll head down to the docking bays and hurry things along. Who are down there?" "Hunter and Thomas are assiting with the unloading, Captain.. I'll keep you informed if anything goes sour." With that, I strode down the corridor to the lift and as I drummed my fingers against the railing, sped down toward the bottom half of the ship to the docking bays. I briskly walked toward the end of the bay, seeing the never-ending asteroids along with a few dozen people scurrying along with machinery following closely behind them. Spotting the contractor, I quickly walk over to him. "Is everything alright down here, Mr. James?" I quietly ask. "Indeed, these supplies are vital to keeping these workers happy and really, all we need to do is finish this jumpgate." he replied. "Ah, I see.. and when will this unloading be finished? Dangerous places we are in, and I am uncomfortable lingering here for too long." "We are just finishing up, your company will recieve payment shortly, along with verification and if requested, reports." "Thank you, we will begin departure once your men are finished. A pleasure doing business with you, Mr.James." "Likewise Captain, farewell." With that we shook hands, and back on the bridge, watched as the shuttles carrying the workers slowly drifted away from the ship, and back towards the construction site. "You happy now, Akers? Get us out of here." "Of course, Captain." stifled Akers, working hard to keep a grin off his face. "Heh, I had a good life it seems.. a shame out of all the incidents that occurs, this had to happen." I continued to lament of the bizarre day that had just occurred... "Kazan lets get these passengers to their destination shall we? Set a course for the Munich system and engage cruise." I said. "Of course, Captain. Course set and cruise is engaged." After the order was executed, I walked to my ship quarters, hoping to sleep for at least half of the trip until I heard a voice in my mind. **Join us... humans are weak... divided... no unity ** the voice echoed. Startled, I woke up, trying to answer to the voice, shouting "Who are you and why should I join you?" The mysterious voice replied, **We are the Created caretakers of this galaxy. Humans are invaders! taken our home from us!** My palms began to sweat and my stomach turned into a knot. I slowly replied, "We were forced out of our home as well, because of ignorant and intolerant people" The terrifying voice continued repeating, **Join us.** "We have entered the New Berlin system, Captain" Kazan chimed. "Aye, thank you. Set a course for the Frankfurt jumpgate... only one more system until we begin another trade run." The eerie voice had gone away for the time being. I sat down on my chair, reading the scan reports until we were hit with a bone-jarring thud. I barked, "Akers? What's going on?" until I saw what shot at us. I flew my ship toward the planet, on the darker side of the horizon and dropped off the passengers and my crew for extraction and braced myself for that last transmission to my crew. The blinding light from the sun through the blastshield of the escape pod snapped me back to reality. I shielded my eyes until I saw a red sun, some deserted planets and an asteroid field. I felt rather distant, but had an overriding fear of killing many innocents before I would permanently be dead. "Well, at least I saved my crew and the passengers... although they are the least of my worries at the moment." **Ours.. Homespace.. untainted space** I looked out into my new home and was drowned in the anxiety of what was to come next... **Get up!....Move!** I wearily stand, feeling the hopelessness of the situation washing over me, and walk slowly toward the opening of the hatch to see a dim lit room. On one half the room, there was the metal that was built into the base itself, while the other gave a clear view of what these nomads called their "Homespace". In this room, a bare table and a small metal chair was all that was in this room. **Sit!!** I quietly slipped into the chair in the middle of the room beside the table and waited. Suddenly, a portion of the wall moved upward to allow three men in.. one in a Republican Shipping uniform and the other two in Rheinland Military uniforms. "What is the meaning of..." I began. I couldn't finish that sentence as one of the men gave me a punch in the temple. "You will stay seated, Invader!" **STAY!!!** Falling to the floor, rubbing my newly acquired bruise, I wave my hands up in surrender. "Let us do this quickly! We have other -humans- to destroy!" said one of the military clothed men. The two other men quickly held me up as I quickly snap my head up in time to see a purple tentacle-like limb come out of his mouth. "No! NO!!! Let.. me.. GO!!!" **Contain him! He will be used for the greater purpose.** The tentacle waivered slightly, shot forward then darkness... **Oneness** **Community** **Wholeness** **Completeness** |
