Background
- First Steps towards the Empire
The first Hispanian colonists made planetfall in lifeboats from the sleepership around the North Pole of the planet which at the time was the closest possible landing zone. Although the colonists predominantly were comprised of people from Iberian peninsula of Old Earth, it was the Greek minority that with some ingenuity organised the first settlement capable of self-sustenance and independent of the supplies brought from Hispania in the most fertile lands of the planet. The establishment and domination of the Hellenic minority in the first decades after the colonisation, the apotheosis of which was naming the whole planet “Crete”, caused cultural tensions and prompted gradual exodus of non-Greek majority in all sides.
The deserts and rocky ravines of equatorial Crete were settled by the Sefardi, Berbers, and Cretan Turks who were more famous with the terrain and conditions and established themselves as traders and middlemen controlling the lucrative trade routes between the resources-rich poles and overseeing the artefacts excavation carried out in ruins scattered across the equatorial zone.
The Greeks remained in the North where the fertile valleys provided a more prosperous and hunger-free life that in turn allowed them to hone their scientific and military skills. One of the most prominent Greek faction on Crete is Custodi, “the preservers”. No longer shunned for the cultural hegemony of their ancestors, they are still viewed as “the elite from a more civilised era”.
The Iberian majority eventually spread out in all directions and settled wherever the territory had still been vacant. The resources abundant South in particularly lured many Spaniards and became of the regions traditionally regarded as “Hispanic”. As the initial rule of the minority gave road to the Corsair Councils following the re-invention of long distance space faring technologies in 5th century AS, the region quickly adapted to the new needs of Crete, becoming one of the rapidly growing industrial powerhouses of the planet.
- Usurper of Montañaria
Montañaria - is a harsh mountainous region close to the southern pole of planet Crete. Due to the proximity to the pole, moderately cold climate and permanent cold season, the region is minimally used for vertical farming of cold-resistant. Nevertheless, the population is numerous because of rich rare metals deposits and rapidly developing mining industry feeding the ever hungry Corsair warmachine.
Despite being an underdog region not playing any prominent role in Cretan race for power, Montañaria has known a lot of shifts of power. Since the establishment of the first settlement in the region in 481 A.S., the local rulers were overthrown 68 times, often with a lethal result. And because of general disdain for human life on Crete, each of those times was accompanied with a massive bloodshed, cleansing the territory from extra hothead people.
The last 68st time occurred in August 824 A.S. when a local warlord, Enrique Herrera amassed a band of followers and mercenaries and drowned Montañaria in blood, eliminating all the actual and potential opposition and earning his nickname “El Carnicero” - “the Butcher”.
- Círculo de oro
Unlike his many predecessors, Herrera was more educated and had some understanding in politics and thus recoursed to “manifested destiny” ideology and convinced his followers they were not merely slaying for another coup but for the future of all Corsairs. At this point the ambitions of an upstart warlord did not end in Montañaria. With the use of scheming and ruthless murder, Enrique “El Carnicero” Herrera lived up to his name and managed to subjugate adjacent minor provinces by 825 A.S. Now controlling most of the territory around the southern pole of Crete, El Carnicero was in charge of a “ring” around the pole with significant deposits of precious metals, such as gold and platinum, and territories with meagre farming potential enough to keep the miners and personal army sustained with food. Herrera’s land soon got its name: Círculo de oro - “circle of gold”.
In spite of owing its name to the obsession of Cretans with riches and anything that represents them, the true treasure of Montañaria are the relatively vast compared to the other parts of Crete reserves of liquid water in regions where normally ice caps would be. Because the temperature on Crete almost never falls below zero, the region has a lot of big lakes and smaller ponds, some of which have drinkable water while the rest have significant admixture of minerals and require filtering. This water infused with minerals proved to be bad for farming. Thus, not having much land fitting for agriculture and having water detrimental to crops, Montañaria has to export minerals to the rest of Crete in exchange for extra food supplies or steel for the warmachine.
Like any other part of Crete, Circulo de Oro also has plenty of ancient ruins full of artefacts. While the number of the ruins is much smaller compared to the equatorial regions, difficult terrain, harsh climate, and remoteness of the ruins prevented the majority of the dig sites in Circulo de Oro from being looted, thus remaining a viable source of income for rough times. Besides, what respected Corsair does not trade artefacts?
- The Black Court
The true challenge of a Corsair warlord is not assuming the position of power but manage to hold onto it. To create some legitimacy for his rule, Herrera as excentric as he might be, exceeded any expectations and proclaimed himself the King of Montañaria. The title of a monarch sounded impostingly and attracted attention from many young Cretans willing to fight for something “guay” in addition to the riches of Montañaria, as well as prospects for securing position for offsprings. With the amassed forces the newly proclaimed King quickly established a tyrannical rule, bathing in blood of those daring to resist.
Such a bold move quickly attracted all sorts of people from around Crete, seeking for recognition, power, and wealth. Soon, those who managed to gain the favour of el Rey or proved their worth got position of prominence at Herrera’s side. This clique promptly became known as “the Black Court” for the obsidian chambers of Escorial, the royal palace, and for the blackened dried blood of those they executed at the throne hall.
While new nobility could enjoy the perks of their status, they did not possess any land or personal levies not to challenge monarch’s rule. Those who roll on with Herrera - get paid handsomely in goods and money, those trying to conspire against him (and getting caught) add up to the piles of corpses giving the Black Court its name.
- Iberian Empire
The short 2-years despotic rule of El Carnicero made King Enrique famous (or infamous) in Southern Crete. Nobody in the region dared to challenge his rule, and his power within his “kingdom” was absolute. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Growing maniacal about power, El Carnicero decided to go big and started probing the grounds for becoming the Emperor of Crete and all Corsairs.
There were two main reasoning, both quite seemingly simple and even stupid for an outsider.
- There is Corsair Empire, yet no Emperor. Then, there must be one.
- Corsairs need more glory and power, and only the big boss, a.k.a “the Emperor” could bring it about.
The third reason might be just the fanciness of the position, and as it is known, fanciness is popular within the Corsairs.
Such plans, however, might be an issue for Herrera and his short rule as up until this day nobody outside of Montañaria and adjacent poor regions cared about some irrelevant “King in the South” and his plans. His claims on all of Crete, however, would rival some of the strongest of the Corsair warlords. Because of this, Herrara propagated his ambitions as reformist agenda of already existing Corsair Empire to make it more cohesive and absolutist, with him “humbly” offering his candidature for the Imperial Throne while being opened to pledging fealty as a vassal to anyone else deemed worthy becoming the Emperor. The reaction from the rest of Corsair society has not yet followed, the majority probably ignoring a “mad maniac in the South”. In spite of this, King Enrique declared Montañaria to become the first asset in the upcoming Iberian Empire. Thus, warlord Enrique “El Carnicero” Herrara remains de facto and de jure self-proclaimed usurper-king of Montañaria Kingdom, and a self-proclaimed aspirant to the throne of Corsair-Iberian Empire without any recognition.
Army & Fleet
- Army
The Iberian Imperial Army is a typical example of Corsairs ground forces - loosely organised warbands with the most talented, experienced, and tough hombre, the “officer”, in charge. The lack of formal organisation is compensated by the courage and aspiration to prove oneself, which in conditions of abundance of manforce to spare and scarcity of resources to feed it is a part of natural selection and societal ladder. Iberian Imperial Army is equipped with all sorts of munitions one can find on the black market as well as of Cretan production. Richer soldiers can afford heavy exoskeletons allowing to carry mobile artillery, or other sorts of custom equipment like long-range energy sniper rifles, strike drones, etc. Soldiers are grouped by equipment and skills into combat units. The army also retains a typical rank hierarchy that is a token of tradition to Hispania and dreams of its crew, including its soldiers.
- Fleet
Iberian Imperial Armada despite the imposing name is but a small fraction of Corsairs fleet, having a few heavy capital ships and comprising mostly armed transports, the “frigates”, as well as numerous fighters and bombers. Natural riches of Montañaria allow to provide the needed tithe to Corsairs’ shipyards for Imperial Armada to be maintained and repaired, as well as for the construction of new ships. The flagship of the Imperial Armada is a Legate-class dreadnought “Cáceres”
State Politics
- Economy:
Current economy of the Iberian Empire is limited to the Kingdom of Montañaria and is heavily focused on mining and heavy industry. The trade predominantly includes exchange for food with neighbouring Cretan states, and from outworld sources. While not well developed due to relatively recent settlement of the region and bloody succession wars, it is still enough to supply the ruling tyrannical elite with luxury at the expense of huge income gap with general population. The middle class is represented by skillful craftsmen, soldiers and mercenaries, rare researchers and other specialists, while the majority of miners and farmers live in which one can call poverty.
- Foreign Relations & Doctrine:
As any Empire, Iberian Empire has to rely on expansion to feed itself. And here lies the predicament: further expansion within Crete is barely possible without provoking a large-scale war with the rest of big families and entities which would be the end of a new imperial court. Outworld expansion is complicated by lack of fleet and invasion forces as all Corsairs barely managed to expand with the might of all Corsair Empire. Thus, while expansion is necessary, it heavily relies on cooperation with the rest of Corsairs society to acquire foreign goods in the absence of feasibility of territorial expansion.
Characteristics
- Strengths:
- Abundance of natural resources planetside;
- Abundance of manpower;
- Aggressive military doctrine;
- Simple, reliable, easy-to-reproduce technologies;
- Strong industrial potential;
- Absolutist power and rapid decision making.
- Weaknesses:
- Lack of ratios and army supply for a lasting conflict;
- Lack of organisation and coordination;
- Lack of standardisation of equipment;
- Limited R&D;
- Possible internal strife;
- Lack of external allies.
- Objectives:
With the above pros & cons considered, the foreign politics of young Kingdom and subsequent Empire presume the following objectives of priorities:
- Establish relations of cooperation with other major Cretan factions to ensure the survival of the Kingdom of Montañaria as the grounds for future Iberian Empire.
- Propagate by means of deals, schemes, propaganda, and other accessible means the idea of reformation of the current Corsair Empire under the premises of absolutist Iberian Empire.
- Enemy of my enemy is my temporary friend. Expand artifact operations into Gallic Hebrides and/or Gallia, and coordinate offensives versus Bretonia.
- Secure imminent rim territories: planet Skagen can offer some living space while protecting the monopoly of the Empire over artefacts from the Core.
- Strike while it is hot. Hit Bretonia that has not recovered after the war, especially important industrial objects. Invade Omega 49 while securing Omega 47 corridor if possible.
- Expand into Omicrons for resources. Previous attempts might have been stopped, but the attempts must continue.
Cooperation
Standing relations with major factions:
- Allied:
- Amicable:
- The Brotherhood – The guardians of our way of life and Crete overall. Vigor and honour, hey?
- Major Corsair Factions – Hermanos y hermanas are respected and estan amigos. Well, unless they try to rival us or steal our food. Or gold.
- Favourable:
- Hogosha – Dealers from Kusari who sell our artifacts. These gringos can be useful to make money.
- Gaians – Whoever shoots Bretonians is already looked upon favourably. Even if they are Bretonians themselves.
- Cryer Pharmaceuticals – oppose Outcasts and challenge their drug market, which is beneficial both militarily and economically.
- Farmers Alliance – they produce food and they oppose Kusari authorities. We help them, perhaps they help us. With food.

Ranks
Tier 1: Guerreros
Fresh blood of the Corsairs. While scouts might be no less skilled in combat than their counterparts with higher ranks, traditionally a new initiate is to prove his worth in solo mission of exploration and reconnaissance. If one can take care for oneself, he will be able to take care of his fellow warriors.
A typical young warrior of the Kingdom. Often called “the club of “B”: brave, bold, bloodthirsty because most of the guerillas are still young and try to show-off at any occasion. Their lack of coordination and audaciousness is compensated by fearless youth maximalism and unpredicted maneuvres that can puzzle even seasoned opponents. Whether genius or stupid, guerillas often serve to distract enemies while more combat-savvy Corsairs carry out the plans set forth by the commanders.
A regular warrior of the Kingdom. Having survived the solitude of scouting and group chaos of guerillas, people of this rank usually show decent performance both while on a solo mission or in a group. They are the main muscle of both the army and the fleet, yet still are more mindful of their own profits and spoils than the benefits of the Kingdom and Crete overall. Because of this, guerreros are often exempted from the most important missions.
Sturdy veterans who have developed a sense of comradeship and the value for teamwork often become legionnaires. Having pride in their service and legacy of old “Hispania”, legionnaires are reliable soldiers who have some sense of duty, which by Cretan standards, is being able to refrain from uncontrolled debauchery and robbery. Quite often such veterans are bonded together by forming a legion, either voluntarily or under the orders of the commanders. Their relative civility and restrain make them perfect guardians of home space, and many legionnaires are deployed to serve on the garrisons or in the defence flotillas.
A skillful veteran with some sense of duty and who has not lost his ambitions throughout the service can become a conquistador. More of a title rather than a military rank, a conquistador is usually a warrior who has proved that his brains are apt for improvisation and rapid analysis of a situation even during the direst combat. Adaptability combined with skills, multiplied by ambitions to do something to show their worth to the top-ups make the conquistadors perfect assault troops. They are often deployed to fight far away from home in hostile space to “conquer for the Crown”, hence the name. Having shown their exceptional value to both their peers and commanders and returning home with the spoils of war, conquistadors are respected among all stratas of Corsair society and are most often featured in the folk songs and tales. Also, are famous for being popular with the opposite sex and good lovers.
Tier 2: Caballeros
Those of the warriors who have shown capability to either lead by example or having something in their brains to command effectively are rapidly promoted to decurions. These low-tier “commanders” are usually the leaders of squads in the ground forces or wing commanders in space. Their new position comes with new responsibilities of taking care of the few subordinates and the benefits of being on the first step to becoming a caballero.
While decurion is basically a conquistador with some wits to inspire and lead by example akin to a sergeant, el capitan is already what is called “an officer” in House navies. Los capitanos usually swap their “Titan” for a ship of a larger size, primarily “Imperator”-gunboat, to have more time for coordinating the subordinates in a fight while not having to avoid every barrage. Unlike a decurion, el capitan undergoes some formal training by the veterans of old regarding the combat theory. Their bigger ships also allow to bring more loot, and becoming a capitan is equal to becoming rich, should the luck favour you in combat that is.
Those capitanos who have impressed the centurions are taken as their “second-in-command”, thus de facto becoming their apprentices. Field experience teaches better than any theory. This is the way of the Corsairs that has supplied the Kingdom and the Empire with quite talented commanders. Still, some advanced theory is beneficial and Optios study fleet maneuvres in spare time. Optios often serve on the same ship with the centurions or on a smaller ship that always works in conjunction with the one of their patron centurion.
Centurions are the bread and butter of Corsair’s field commanders. Having enough men in their disposal, centurions can carry out complex combat maneuvres whether in space or on the ground, and be on par with the officers of the Houses. Rarely are centurions young, and thus have seen everything in their climbing the career ladder. Their invaluable experience and understanding of the position in the social and military hierarchy of every subordinate depending on his rank allows centurions to easily sacrifice some guerillas as “meat shield” in order to perform a brutally effective tactical move that can leave stunned even the most sophisticated adversary. To have a better overview of the battle, centurions are often seen piloting “Praefect”-class cruisers.
Hard service can lead a man into grave, or to a triumph. Becoming a caballero is certainly a triumph for any Corsair for this title is recognised as minor nobility with all the perks such a status entails. Caballeros are promoted personally by the local warlord, be it someone from higher nobility or the monarch himself. Aspiring and talented commanders from the ranks of centurions usually become caballeros after staging an outstanding battle, although optios, and even capitans can become a caballero if their feats have been truly remarkable. Caballeros are assigned to their patron from among the higher nobility whom they shall serve as their retainers and military specialists. For their service, they are awarded with land on Crete or Amorgos within the holdings of their patron, and their personal manor. In combat caballeros can pilot both small interceptors and large war vessels, including the battleships. The choice of the ships heavily depends on the funds their patron is ready to provide for his retainers. What some can consider as trading military career for licking boots of some big wig, the others call a proper reward for the years of service that will not be lost upon death and be inherited by descendants. The truth is, probably, somewhere in-between.
Tier 3: Courtiers
Getting to become a courtier of the King is a hard task. Usually it involves becoming a caballero of the King or some closely related to the King noble. If one succeeds in the task, however, he is usually granted with a rank of “Senor” that distinguishes him from the caballeros of the lesser nobility and allows for the King to uphold his status through the positions of his courtiers. A Senor is a hereditary title, and as such does not necessarily mean that the holder thereof has spent decades fighting in all parts of Sirius to get the piece of the noble pie. However, this rank provides access to royal fundings and the best equipment a Corsair can get, thus spawning a lot of young equipped to the teeth brash nobles who are ready to show off even more than guerillas since only one of Senor’s children is entitled to inheriting the title. Unlike the guerillas, however, the equipment of young Senors allows them to survive longer and even achieve some high positions in Corsair’s society.
Those Senors opting for “civil” services and administration are usually rewarded with a title of Grandeza should they prove their worth. This is the highest lower nobility title that a civilian can expect. However, it is more than enough to live a luxurious by Cretan standards life and have a prominent voice in the life of the Kingdom without exposing oneself to risk of dying every now and then. Grandezas are respected in the society because of their important job, and the brutal retainers they can send to support their policies, although nobility related to the military matters is regarded higher.
A dream of almost any child on Crete is to become a warlord - a high-ranking military commander who enjoys autonomy because of his status of a noble and thus “can do whatever he wants”. Long military career or professional education usually help warlords form many ties with all sorts of warriors, supplying the nobles with live force. Such private armies are often used to assert the dominance over certain patches of land that technically do not belong to a warlord yet will legally become his “by the right of force”. Despite sometimes regarded as an impetus to Corsairs’ unity, warlords are needed to select the fiercest and strongest leaders that can protect the way of Crete and impose its rule in the toughest conditions of the Omicrons.
A bigger and badder warlord. More subordinate warriors, more guns, more money, more hunger for power. While it is possible to get “promoted” to an overlord by the monarch, most overlords are self-made by taking what is due from their rivals. Some become so big and bad that they become monarchs themselves. Together with warlords, they usually fly the biggest ships to uphold their status and to gather support of guerreros willing to shed blood for glory in some big operation with big ships involved.
Warlords and overlords recognised by the monarch and deemed loyal enough to the Crown can be proclaimed “adelantados” - the highest possible military rank in the Kingdom. Adelantado is simply “the one who leads” and substitutes the King on the battlefield, acting in his absence as the supreme leader. An adelantado is free in his actions unless the King decreed otherwise, and can organise his own campaigns of any scale and in any direction as long as those are not prohibited by the monarch beforehand. Since adelantados are capable of deploying whole fleets, their favour is often sought by the people from outside the Kingdom and the Empire, making them even more important than some higher nobility.
Tier 4: Nobility
A hereditary title that can only be awarded by the King himself. Too fancy for many Corsairs, the title is considered “suspicious” and not fitting the Corsair way. However, whether being a big and bad warlord or some top administrative clerk, it is the direct backing of the Crown that make them rise above the others. Capable of lobbying their desires in front of the King and expecting a favourable result, they can employ not only their own brute force, but also the brute force of the whole Kingdom if they are regarded favourably. In addition, barons have much better fiefs and holdings than lower nobility and therefore can enjoy better life and attract better caballeros in their service.
A rare hereditary title that is usually awarded to the best friends or the most talented nobles of the Kingdom by the King personally. Enjoying immense power both in the military and administrative matters, Condes are second only to the King and to adelantados in the time of big military operations. The main benefit of being a conde (or a baron) is that they can stop caring about public opinion and do things from the shadows if necessary while not afraid of losing the inflow of talented followers due to riches and status the higher nobility enjoys unlike the warlords who have to constantly prove they are the best to follow and not the other warlord.
