Randall Lamar - sivran - 03-24-2009 This is to be a bare-bones bio of my trader, who started out as merely a means to an end (read: funding my other character(s)) but lately has taken on a life of his own. I intend to keep it that way and let the character grow as I play. I find characters that just evolve out of vague or nothingness more interesting. I'll probably add stuff in here as the character grows. Randall Lamar is a large, burly man who spent the early years of his adult life as a dock worker on Planet Houston. At six foot four (that's 1.9 meters for the euros) and nearly three hundred pounds, he's been known to intimidate just by standing up. In contrast to his intimidating bulk, his face usually sports a friendly grin, and he's always ready with a friendly "Howdy!" and a slap on the back. He has blue eyes, and a beard which he strokes when in thought. His career in space started after he purchased a badly damaged CSV off a junker pilot who couldn't afford to fix it. After a few months of saving and scrounging for parts, he bid his coworkers goodbye, telling them, "I'll be sure to stop by after I make it big," and then set off into space. The beat up old CSV was inadequate for trading, but got him his start in the copper fields of Colorado, where he earned enough to purchase an X-Shuttle, and finally begin his trading career. Millions of credits later, he currently flies a Firefly. Randall prefers to be called Randy, saying, "only my folks call me Randall, an' only when I'm in trouble." He is, in general, friendly, and often tries to be a peacemaker. He sums up his unconventional politics with: "I like anyone who'll drink with me. It don't matter ta me if they're a beer-drinker, vodka-shooter*, pirate, hunter, or what have you. If they'll drink with me, they're arright by me. If ever'one'd just sit down an' 'ave a drink with each other, we'd all jus' get along nicely. Booze is the way to peace. Sure ya might have a few bar room brawls, but ain' no one gets killed in a proper brawl, and ever'one comes away with a better unnerstan'in of their fellow man. That's just part of the process, y'see." "Now, as fer this war 'tween us 'n the beer-makers, I'll afta think about that 'un. s'my home we're talkin' 'bout here, here bein' Texas. But the beer-makers, they got the best beer there ever was. I don't understan' it at all. I s'pose you could say I'm loyal ta Liberty, but I don't really wanna see either side win--or lose. Texas is Texas and Rheinlan' is Rheinlan', an' it oughta stay that way. The president an' the.. the.. got-cancer er whatever oughta siddown an' 'ave a few beers together. And invite us. The more the better!" * - beer-drinker/beer-maker, vodka-shooter: Randall's terms for Rheinlanders and SCRA, respectively. Bretonians are "tea-sippers" ...he hasn't made anything up yet for Kusari and Libertonians.:P first update: Randy has been deeply affected by the words of an Oracle, and intends to strike out on his own to find this "shrine" of theirs. I'll be writing more on this. Depending on how much I write I may add it here or as a story in the Stories section. second update: Randy has given over his ship to his second, and taken off in a fighter to seek the shrine the Oracle spoke of, which is a long-winded way of saying I'm creating a new server character to represent Randy, and the "SmallTimeTrader" character will represent this Patrick guy that popped into my head as Randy's only crewman aboard the ship. (in large part because the sum networth of all my characters is less than what some traders make in a day:P) More on him later, when he finally decides whether he's Bretonian or not. But that's for another post, another bio, another thread. See Trader No More for a very short story on this, and I'll also post updates on Randy's search there as well. |
