I installed Discovery and made a character. After my account is verified I want to explore the universe. Commodity trading is of course a major goal, but I am sure to need some powerful weapons, or maybe just an armed escort.

Welcome to Discovery mate!
A great thing to do is to make a test character and using some of the restarts. These are pre-made characters that have the perfect reputations to play as certain factions such as police forces or unlawful pirates. You can see all of them by typing "/showrestarts" into chat, then choose a restart and type /restart [chosen faction]. With those you can have a fly around loads of different parts of the universe and find somewhere you like.
You'll need a trader at first to make some money to fund creating ships for combat, or you can go and shoot some NPCs to earn money via bounty.
I recommend having a look through the Tutorial Database (I can't vouch for how accurate or legible it is), look at the amazing interactive navmap (the link is in Player Utilities at the top of the forums too) to have a browse at how the universe it connected, and maybe look through the list of official player factions to see what others do here.

Welcome to DIscovery
There are a few ways to make money but trading is probably the simplest, safest and easiest, especially to begin with.
It's good that you've made an account on the forum as there are plenty of tutorials and guides here. You can also find factions that are recruiting, there's many players and I imagine a few factions that would be happy to help out a beginner!
Also, if you have Discord, there's the main DiscoveryGC channel that is worth joining and many various faction channels that are friendly to players who haven't joined a player faction (independent players, or "indies"). And if you don't have Discord, well.. it's worth getting, just for the easiness of communication.

Trading, especially powertrading, is probably the best way to get credits if you know how routes work. I would also suggest getting FLSTAT or FLcompanion for that. Other than that, I hope to see you ingame!
