Short description:
A community-organised battle between the Outcasts and the Corsairs in Omicron Theta

The civilisations of Sirius are built on the backs of the intrepid, the brave, and the desperate. The mire of the Edge Nebula, the barrier between human civilisation and the alien unknown beyond, carves a boundary between the Kusarian solar nursery to the cosmic north and the turbulent, charred furnaces of of the Omegas to the south. Since the arrival of the Crayter expedition, and, before that, the exodus of the first alliance sleeper ships, no human contact has ever penetrated the endless wastes and and radiation bands of the Edge wall.

The Corsairs and the Outcasts - the prodigal children of the Hispania and the offspring of the desolate, alien worlds of Crete and Malta, have carved a brutal existence within the teeming wonders, perils, and xenofauna of the last frontier. Separated by a grievous historical betrayal blamed alternately upon the rest of the Alliance colonies, the Coalition, the Nomads, and each other, the Corsairs and the Outcasts could not be more different in their technological, cultural, and practical development. Where the Corsair people starved, the Outcasts struggled to reproduce. When the Outcasts developed longevity, intelligence and cosmic insight from the orange grass of their homeworld, the Corsairs developed spartan pragmatism, ruthlessness, and a sense of spiritual superiority. Where the Outcasts lacked mineral wealth, they flourished from the rich zoology of their colony. Where the Corsairs suffered through famine and drought, their home world provided ample metals and rare earths. Where the Outcasts abandoned their physiological humanity to cardamine, the Corsairs cannibalised their own citizens. Both nations are inextricably tied to the remnants of the Daam K'vosh, and have built up vast wealth and power by retailing the fruits of the alien worlds through the black markets of Sirius and Gallia. Where the Outcasts are brutal slavers, the Corsairs are vicious raiders. They are, in effect, the two diametric extremes of the modern human race.

An Outcast will do anything to live forever, whilst a Corsair would give anything to die for the cause.

A feud rekindled

The Outcasts and the Corsairs have been locked in a continous state of war since the two factions first rediscovered one another's existence. Their conflict is the oldest in the history of the colonies, dating back to before the Hispania's arrival in Sirius itself. The dogged attempts by the Corsairs and the Outcasts to gain advantage over each other has defined the history of the entire Sirian black market, and a hard border exists between the Corsair and Outcasts worlds of the Northern and Southern Omicrons.

Hispania at war: The Outcasts

For the last two hundred years, the children of Hispania have preferred to fight through proxies, expending energy, lives, and resources haggling over customers and acolytes in the core colonies rather than at home. As their empires have grown and prospered since the Nomad War, building vast underworld intelligence networks and brutal frontier economies that, if combined, would challenge an Alliance colony. Both sides have considered the other too powerful to confront directly, and most skirmishes over territory have been confined to brief, if spectacular raids between concentrated fleets. The viciousness of the Outcasts towards the IMG and the Crayterians in the Taus, and the grinding, relentless warfare of the Corsairs against the Hessians and the Coalition in the Omegas, was never truly borne out against one another. This historical curiosity can be best attributed to the balance of power - both civilisations have fought remorselessly for the direly contested existences they enjoy. Both civilisations are accustomed to asymmetric conflict. The Outcast valuation of every single Maltese life, and the Corsair attitude to warfare as a form of resource acquisition, has kept the sons of Malta and Crete from any attempt to wage a direct war. Until now.

The increasingly overt influence of the formerly reclusive Maltese, beginning with the adventurism of the Contari clan over a decade before, and cumulating in Malta's involvement with the Bretonians during the Gallic incursion, has pushed Maltese pilots into increasingly vicious confrontations with the Corsairs in the Bretonian theatre. On the home front, the advent of Outcasts fraternizing with elements of other Omicron groups, such as the Core through the actions of the sprit-worshipping Loyola clan, threatened to tip the balance of power in the fringe systems. On the home front, the growth of a nascent warrior culture under the newly-formed Maltese Navy's 101st squadron broke down the classical Maltese stigma towards direct combat, refining a generation of Maltese pilots without equal. The divisions between slaves and master also decayed, as the XTF slave militia rapidly became exceptional examples of the new wandering Maltese warrior archetype. The Los Zetas cartel spread influence and affluence throughout the underworld, bringing Cardamine to every house the Outcasts touched - except for Rheinland, which remained stalwartly resistant to either side of the Hispanic rift. The Crimson Cross institutionalised the oral tradition of the Maltese faith and their pseudo-spiritualist ideation of the Nomads as an icon, whilst still accepting the reality of the K'haran threat. Partisan-esque skirmishing warfare became just one of many tools amidst the Outcast goal of cardamine-induced transhumanism, with the Legion Maltesa gaining acclaim throughout the Maltese empire without any formalised backing by the traditional clans. The development of new-built warships and fighters to replace non-indigenous borderworlds designs prevented the Outcasts from becoming technologically outstripped by their southern nemesis, whilst the oldest and most eldrich elements of Maltese society quietly reaped the benefits of singularity research and a host of technological interventions under the tacit influence of the Nomads. Above all others in the expansionist faction, the Hispania Imperial movement presently holds the reigns of the Maltese state, driving the normally reclusive outcasts into conflict with the Corsairs. The touch of the Orange dream now extended from the isles of Kyushu to the cityscapes of Manhattan, and even deep into the politically turbulent Gallic sector.

Hispania at war: The Corsairs

To the south, the Corsairs expanded relentlessly, raiding, pilfering, robbing, and razing as they went. Despite relentless opposition the seemingly endless hoards of Rheinland and Bretonia's disaffected revolutionaries, the Corsair people spread throughout the Omegas through a mixture of sordid ruthlessness and strategic brilliance, crushing opposition as they went. Desperate to exact revenge upon the Alliance and the Coalition for the Hispanic split, Corsair antimatter warheads gutted the Coalition world of Jiangxi, turned sand to glass over the Molly colony of Planet Cork, and drove the last remnants of the Alliance Supersoldier program found amongst the Maltese defectors, the Reapers of Sirius, from their home in the Cayman system. The raiding lands of the Corsair empire now spreads all the way from civil strife of Omega 49, to the frontiers of Omicron Theta. In an act of hubris, the Corsairs even assisted the Gallic crown during the final hours of the Royal regime, fighting alongside the Gauls above the burning worlds of Bretonia and claiming the loot of the dead. In the Sigmas, the Corsairs have sunk deep hooks into the mire, quietly establishing bases and positions with the support their Kusarian backers. Yet Corsair expansion has not proceeded entirely unchecked. Hessian resistance in the Omegas has prevented total Corsair dominance in the region, buffering the pirate empire from the most lucrative tradelane networks. In the Nomad worlds, the Corsairs were rebuffed from the sands of Nauru by the vicious intervention of the Core, who have sized the world for themselves, driving the borders of the Corsair Empire in the Nomad worlds back to Omicron Kappa. Continued mistrust of the Zoner community by traditionalist elements the Corsairs has enkindled occasional acts of piracy against the remotest Zoner colonies, and the Corsairs have been nearly as historically prone to infighting as the Outcasts have.

Despite these threats, the empire remains strong. Under The Corsair Brotherhood, the wise and sophisticated council of Elders has developed a strong sense of conjoined traditionalist identity throughout Corsair space, centralising the disparate Empire. The firebrand Hellenic tribe of the Empire, the Custodi, has done much to modernise certain sectors of Corsair life, bestowing the modern breed of Corsairs with guide and political abilities not found within their forefathers. The Black Flag Corsairs militarized and institutionalised Corsair pirate life, creating a vicious raiding culture that remains unsurpassed by any other criminal group in the sector. In more recent years, The Taurus Corsairs - the nascent cult of the Bull - have spread the belief that the Corsair way of life is honourable, virtuous, and preferable to that of a life in the colonies. The Iberian Empire - a movement pushing for the expansion of Crete's borders by force, holds influence within the elder council. The widespread influence of the Benitez family - with a member in seemingly ever state-wide position, brought a common sense of duty to the sons and daughters of Crete. Technologies stolen, thieved, swindled, or brought from others refined Corsair warship design, leading to offshoots of the Osiris dreadnought design that exceed the capacity of the original hulls. The Corsair civilisation now exceeds their namesake as the fearsome and and sophisticated robber-lords of the underworld.

The Hispania War

The First Assault

The contest between these two equal, yet irreconcilably alien powers, has boiled over. Corsair strikes, spurred on by neo-spiritual fervour and a sense of ancestral purpose spreading amongst the raider clans, have begun to push into the Outcast home stars of Omicron Alpha, around the Hispania debris field. In Omicron Xi, a vital heartland of the Corsair Empire, Outcast warships are infrequently sighted to the system's north, likely responding to the Corsair incursions. It appears that the collective preferences of the Hispanic peoples to wage their conflicts at arms length, has reached final conclusion. The war for the edge worlds has begun.

A Corsair feint to secure the Daaam K'vosh jumpgate's exit point in Omicron Beta ran directly into an awaiting Outcast ambush. Confident in their ability to outlast the Corsairs in the swirling mire of northern Edge Nebula, the Maltese forces attacked targets of opportunity, decimating the Corsair warships. With the bulk of their artillery gone, the Corsairs seemed certain to suffer heavy casualties. The primary command vessel was lost in the engagement, along with much of the Corsair battleship force. Excellent dogfighter tactics by the Maltese whittled away the Corsair screen, whilst a comprehensive and well-planned cruiser stratagem negated the artillery throw-weight of the Corsair cruiser pickets. The day seemed certain to be won by the Outcasts.

However quick thinking and a reactive rallying action by the Corsair gunboat, bomber, and fighter forces capitalised on an opening in the Outcast lines. As the fight began to bog down, the Outcasts appeared to prefer a decentralised attack plan, spreading their fighter screen away from their warship forces. In a moment of tactical inspiration, the remaining half of the Corsair battlegroup whipped around, and began systematically targeting the Outcast cruiser force, whilst the fighter and bomber elements kept the Outcast airwing spread out. As the Outcast vessels started to divide, the Corsairs began to lay crippling, and then incapacitating damage among the Outcast warships, hulking the Outcast cruisers and battleships alike. A heavy warship advantage was rapidly whittled down as strike craft losses accumulated on both sides, with the Outcasts eventually losing the remnants of their gunboat and bomber elements. Unwilling to suffer further casualties, the Outcasts melted into the nebula, yielding the field to the battered Corsairs.

-

Conscious of the threat their rearline areas in the Northern Omicrons, the Maltese have attempted to match the Cretians at their own game, in a radical flanking action through the contested outer Sigmas. In an inspired piece of tactical reconnaissance, the Outcasts out-manoeuvred the Barcelona's battlegroup, successfully entering the Omicron Theta System in force for the first time in over a year. Whilst close to the heartlands of the Corsair homeworlds, Omicron Theta is only nominally defended by the Corsairs, granting the Outcasts the perfect theatre to engage in harassment attacks. As the two evenly matched fleets steer towards one another, the Zoner population looks on with a mixture of fear and opportunism as conflict comes to comparatively peaceful Omicron Theta system.

For future events, since the Outcast Storta isn't really balanced against the Corsair Praefect, what about giving the outcasts a Storta and a Hasta to match two Corsair Praefects?

A battlecruiser isn't balanced against a cruiser, and previous experiments in substituting ships in the name of balance has led to failure. Same type-verses-same type is easier to balance than any other separation of unequal ships. In the last PVP engagement, the Outcasts won the cruiser fight, with the exact same cruiser compliment as suggested here.
