There are ways to do that, but the discovery rules do not allow it, because it is hard to follow the nicknames using special characters on the database.

Alright, I thought it's just discouraged to be used too much and okay to use on Germanic characters, thanks.

It's not possible. There's some very wonky workarounds but nothing reliable.

It's partly related to what version of the original freelancer.exe the one you are running is based on. In the past I used to be able to type german special characters in game, now the same key combinations give me Russian ones instead.
