The foundation of the Gallic Navy happened in the very year of the arrival of sleeper ship Gallia into Ile-de-France and the subsequent landing on a planet, now christened New Paris. Originally tasked with space exploration and searching for other sleeper ships, yet later, with the availability of space flights becoming accessible to many groups and corporations and with the appearance of criminals and bandits in space, the Gallic Navy switched to internal security and maintaining order on the Gallic territories. Since having a large number of capital ships and constantly developing cutting edge technologies to ensure supremacy over their enemies, the Gallic Royal Navy grew to be the most powerful military force known in Sirius. As many centuries passed, the Royal Navy proved its worth in combat and managed to remain undefeated. The Royal Navy was also responsible for creating the plan to invade Sirius in a swift invasion, before the nations of Sirius could mobilize their military forces.
While at first successful, it quickly stagnated into a war of attrition, following the victory over Kusari. The Royal Navy knew it could not keep up with the combined might of Bretonia, Liberty and their many allies. Therefore, a daring plan was made for a lightning-fast strike at the Bretonian core worlds, which later become known as the "Blitz of New London" - to cripple Bretonia and assure victory. Behind the front, however, the situation was much more chaotic. With growing instability from overstretched supply lines and increasing Council attacks, large numbers of Gallic military personnel began defecting which helped pave the way for Council forces to move on New Paris herself. The Council fleet advances to Planet New Paris, Ile-de-France, 742 AGS The Blitz was a massive gamble made by the Royal Navy's command - one that would eventually break their nation. When the Liberty battlegroups started to encircle the over-extended GRN vessels, the Blitz strategy faltered. This was the turning point in the war, and many fled in a general route to Leeds. Meanwhile, in Gallia, The Council had taken control of New Paris and came to an agreement with Grand Duke Trintignant for an armistice. Upon hearing of the so-called "traitors'', the remnants of the Royal Navy that did not return to Gallia began the infamous “Glassing of Leeds'', a desperate last-minute action aimed at dealing as much damage to Bretonia as possible. This event forever changed the way Sirius looked at Gallia. The operation to scorch Leeds was a success as the Armed Forces arrived too late to save the planet. Under the command of Regent d'Avignon, hardline royalist troops ventured into Edinburgh and set up a blockade around the jump holes leading out of the system. These forces called themselves the Gallic Royal Enclave and set out to reclaim the glory Gallia once had - along with returning the King to the throne. Whilst these events were unfolding, the negotiations in Gallia reached an end and after many years of conflict, the Confederacy was formed. The newly-structured Confederal Defense Forces were a complete mish-mash of Council, Royal Navy, and Minarchy troops. It was obvious from the start that coordinating such a force would be difficult at the very least and disorganization and a lack of a sense of unity continually plagued the new state all the way up to the reformation into the current Gallic Union. The Royal Navy secures Planet Quillan, Languedoc, during the Kusarian Invasion, 743 AGS In 743 AGS, Kusari launched a surprise invasion into eastern Gallia, and offered the Confederacy the chance to prove themselves. While the assault was successful in Lorraine and eastern side of Languedoc, the confrontation quickly got bogged down into yet another war of attrition. The majority of the Defense Forces, already war-weary from the previous conflicts, put up minimal resistance once Kusari reinforcements arrived, their Naval Forces would go on to destroy the strategically valuable Fourchambault Shipyard before retreating out of Gallia. In the Hebrides sector, matters became increasingly tenuous for the Royal Enclave with the invasion of Edinburgh by Bretonia Armed Forces. The final decision taken was to evacuate the system and relocate to Gallia. Kusari commanders expected an easy retreat on the Languedoc front; yet, with the arrival of the Royal Enclave fleets and the rag-tag units of the Defense Forces that survived Fourchambault, the Kusari fleet found themselves in a battle that resulted in a pyrrhic victory for the Gallic forces. This resulted, at least for the time being, in an end of conflict for the Gallic nation. The Royal Enclave and Defense Forces, after the formation of the Union, rallied together under the new banner of the Gallic Navy - a proud, however young, military force that had many experienced commanders. In spite of the peace however, Gallic authorities are still largely viewed by outsiders as synonymous with those responsible for the Glassing of Leeds and the millions of lost lives during the invasion. This involvement has been repeatedly denied by the Union, claiming all responsible personnel have been executed or have fled from justice. HIERARCHY
In the new Gallic society, military is even more heavily integrated than it used to be during the royal regime: begining from the rank of Capitaine, Gallic citizens receive many privileges, rights, and possibilities that only increase as they climb the hierarchy. Serve the nation with loyalty in your heart, and Gallia will thank you with wealth, influence, and respect.
GREAT OFFICERS GRAND MARÉCHAL Grand Maréchal is the supreme commander of the Gallic military and leader of the state. MARÉCHAL The four Maréchals are the most decorated and respected military officers and experienced both in military and civilian affairs. They are governing whole subsectors, leading Gallic armada in battle from bridge of their most advanced flagships when its needed. FLAG OFFICERS AMIRAL Chosen from the best of the Gallic Navy's officers, while holding great responsibility in keeping Gallia safe, they also enjoy membership to the Grand Assembly, being in the upper chain of influencing the course of the Gallic nation. Whole system fleets are under their command and they report only to the Maréchals and Grand Maréchal. CONTRE-AMIRAL An important asset to the Gallic military machine, the Contre-amiral rank obligates their owner to maintain the bests performance and order execution on local level, they command squadron of warships. SENIOR OFFICERS COMMANDANT One of many command's hands, boasting control of naval operations within their designated territory and commanding a division from the bridge of a battleship-class warship. CAPITAINE The first rank among the senior officers and the increased responsibility and power, as well as since this rank they may influence the course of Gallic nation. They usually assist high-ranked commandants as their adjutants, but are eminently capable to command flotilla by themselves from the bridge of their battlecruiser. JUNIOR OFFICERS LIEUTENANT The next step in the Union social hierarchy and its armed forces - they are the highest rung of the low command and ensure the orders, plans, and operations set forth by the highest ranks are carried out efficiently. They are experienced enought for commanding a Gallic destroyer. SOUS-LIEUTENANT The backbone of the Gallic Navy and the lowest chain of its command, Sous-lieutenants are hand-picked from the aspirants who have passed all exams in naval academies on at least minimal required level. They are often to be seen as pilots of fighters and bombers, but exceptional Sous-lieutenants are permitted with access to a gunship. FLEET
With its fleets severely thinned out as a result of Gallia's previous wars, the GDA is forced to adapt to their new naval situation. In an attempt to prevent the repetition of past mistakes, Gallia's brightest war theorists proposed that battlecruisers be the new backbone of the fleets, leading destroyers, gunboats, and snubcraft into battle. The Valor-class battleships would now become the fallback center for every formation. This evolution of Gallic war tactics intends to transform the GDA fleets into fast and flexible beasts capable of steamrolling any disturbance while also able to reinforce their line using the heavy firepower of a battleship when necessary.
