New to mining, am I doing something wrong? - Mate_Rudar - 12-06-2021

Hello everyone!

I'm fairly new to the mod, been playing it for a couple of days and have been reading forum guides trying to absorb all of the information.

I took an interest in mining and followed a guide step by step:

* I bought a mining ship DU5-7Y "Hegemon" Asteroid Miner
* My reputation with the IMG is at max
* I bought a IMG ID
* I've equipped 4 Heavy Mining Array (Class 3) turrets

I've visited several mining fields in several systems, shooting at smaller asteroids that can be targeted to no avail.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong so I'm kindly asking for your help. Thanks Smile

Check the mineable zones in this list, what you can mine and where is under Ore Routes:

Not every asteroid field drops stuff.

Hello Mate_Rudar

I was wondering if you could do me a favour, you being a new member. I want someone to evaluate a concept that helps new players like yourself get established.

The concept is simple:
  • I set you up with a mining ship with either a Junker or ALG ID and mine scrap from either New York, Frankfurt, or New London. By default it will be a Junker ID and based at McBoyles Schrottplatz (Junkyard)
  • The ship is the Kaiser mining ship that is a lease to buy. It will come fully equipped for mining and has a 2750 hold.
  • You can move the ship into your account with a move character code which I would give you by Personal Message (PM).
  • You can mine the scrap field and sell it at the Junkers base in New Berlin for a return of over 11 million Sirius Credits.
  • From that repayment of 22 million SC can be made to my bank ship called Donkey by typing ingame /sendcash Donkey 22,000,000 - then the ship is yours. You can rename it if you like.
  • Apart from repaying 22 million credits there are no strings attached. The ship is all yours!

What do you think? Would you like to trial this?

Cheers!

Thanks, but that wouldn't be fun for me. I like exploring the options and finding ways to earn credits myself

If you started with a Freelancer ship, make sure your max rep with IMG is flashing green, as that sets your external IFF, and you need your IFF and ID to match for it to work right (get the best drop rate possible). If you still have Freelancer in full flashing green you will need to /droprep once to get the IMG IFF to take its place. Otherwise you should be good to go. If you plan to mine as IMG, there is still an ore field in Tau-23 you might want to start with. I'm pretty sure at this point all of the mineable zones with valuable commodities are marked with a buoy that says 'Mineable Zone', and you should get a decent drop rate within a few Km of that.

Is it possible to keep "old" IFF? As I saw in case you buy a new ID your IFF changes automatically.

Need to look at your reputation. IFF (Identity Friend or Foe) needs to match your ID. So, if you have an IMG ID, but your IFF is Freelancer, you need to type /droprep and do so again until IMG is the highest green. You may have to take an IMG bribe to get highest green.

It depends on what ID you're using, and what IFF you've had. The Freelancer IFF/ID is different because it is also neutral. For most ID's, if you switch to another ID from Freelancer, you'll keep your Freelancer IFF until you /droprep. The faction ID should still max out your rep with that ID and keep it second. If you /droprep your Freelancer rep will go down and the ID will force your IFF to match.

For non human ID's like the Nomads it may force off your Freelancer IFF right away, but for human ID's like any military/police/intel, generic ID's like Junker or Pirate and even yes IMG, you can still broadcast a Freelancer IFF for a variety of reasons. Not a good idea if you plan to mine, but ironically you can mine at a decent rate with a Freelancer ID and IFF now.

For those who want to get back your Freelancer IFF, dock at a Freelancer station, mount a Freelancer ID, and you sort of have to oorply attack the Freelancer cargo containers outside the Freelancer station (destroy them all), sun/planet dive and let yourself respawn at that station, and go to the bar with full red reputation with Freelancers. Take a Freelancer bribe and that should lead to more, you want to get 3 of the ones over a million credits each. It would be nice to have a /freelancer command like the /pirate one to reset your Freelancer IFF once you remount a Freelancer ID Wink .
