Relaxation in Death - WiseTaurus - 05-17-2022

Corsica Complex - Omicron Alpha

Alberto Cruz sipped his warm drink with full confidence, a moment of peace in all the mayhem that he has to endure each day. He was not up to this: Cruz only wanted a comfortable life in the outskirts of Malta, smelling the grass and feeling the wind, wandering around the vast plantations. Working as voluntary on the fields, like the forced labor does, was considered almost an option for him; if it was not for the unilateral decisions that Dons make in those fields. In many cases, Maltese traitors are dealt harsher than slaves, so making a crime to reach that line of work could be messy; ending up in Carinea, instead of a plantation. Without even considering a simple transfer request and filling his mind with non-sensical thoughts, Alberto did not stand a chance to change his life at all, a coward not only to himself but also to his peers, as he frequently thought to himself.

During the break, he heard a couple of women having a heated chat:

“…and I told her SNIFF THIS ONE, ESCORIA! Ha ha…the blood spilled all around the floor with that last shot. It was amazing, a good one. Yes, that was my last date with a Zoner.”

“Amiga, if I wanted to be seduced with this…You already got me, right? No need for that. Let’s hope that our own next encounter does not end like your awful and cheesy story.”

“It won’t, I promess.”

The couple of Outcasts embraced to each other, their bodies merged and profound kisses reflected their chaotic emotions. Cruz, looking at the distance, was baffled; unsure if glad or terrified by the duo, displaying the passionate act or the apathetic acceptance for the most devious recklessness. Either way, he looked to the rest of the grand facility. He was in an open area, surrounded by pathways, buildings, people and noises. Sit in the middle of Il Riposo del Viaggiatore, a robust food place with colorful chairs and tables, Alberto Cruz waited patiently for the other members to arrive; ready to meet up a couple of Hyperspace members for an important task. The crowd was mostly composed by technicians, guards and slaves; these last ones escorted to their mandatory works.

“¡A trabajar, basura!”

An enthusiastic slaver yelled the group of chained people; while these last ones travelled slowly to the next docking area for whatever exhausting ordeal they had to face soon. Impregnated by excruciating pain and desolation in their eyes, the forced labor did not share the same energy as the owner, as they struggled to breath; sweated living corpses walking to their imminent doom. Cruz almost laughed at the dichotomy of such place, an irony of life where pleasure and misery can be seen at the same time; where human condition weights as light as the wealthiest and daring hands decide. He felt comfortable in his current position once again.

The general infrastructure resembled the constructions in Malta, steep and tall, buildings incrusted in the rock. Scaffolds can be seen everywhere, as the already occupied asteroid is constantly being transformed. Alberto looked at the several Sabres and Rapiers flying around, emerging from the hidden landing pads, ready to traverse the exit and beyond. A cacophony of smooth engines, super alloys bending and people urgency can be heard throughout the complex; a space fortress that never ceases to operate.

With a final hum of the roaring engine of the Ranseur, the flames flashing out the back extinguish. The crew of the Vibora run around finalizing the landing procedures and opening the walkway. Juan harabero, the captain of the dreadnought, proceeds down the stairway. The man in, in his late fifties with thinning gray hair, is surrounded by a phalanx of guards. He was, after all, the captain of a capital ship.

The scene did not bother Juan, nor his guards. Just another landing for them. The bystanders however, were much more interested in the group heading towards them. One even almost got vaporized for standing too close. Senor Harabero, scheduled for a meeting, briskly continued his trip to the inner rooms of the complex

Santiago Rosario landed his Sabre on the docking platform. He was curious as to what would happen here as he turned off the engines and systems and got out and down from the rather tall ship. It wasn't the most slender vessel but it served him well. The bystanders saw him but he was more focused on meeting with his fellow fleet members. "Wonder how this will turn out" he thought as he found them.

Alberto Cruz grew impatient, but after finishing his drink, he stood and tried to look further; near the multiple docking bays. Of course, from the food stand he could see nothing; so, he walked to where he was really supposed to meet them: In the middle of the complex. Even with the opulent monuments and structures around him, the plaza was open enough to see every wayfarer that passed through it. Cruz moved with haste, as he was starting to feel nervous, wondering if he forgot a relevant instruction in this apparent casual meeting. Truth to be told, assuming how vital this mission was, he was wondering why he had to wait in this particular place.

Anxiety became frustration and before his sweat began to flow, a dread touch covered his body entirely. An unsuspected hand touched his left shoulder and before he could even gasp in complete submission, a whisper emerged.

“Buen día, señor Cruz.”

A familiar voice, he turned back and he felt relieved.

“Julia, could you please stop with that? My nerves, please.”

Julia López, indifferent to what Cruz was mentioning, proceeded to remove something from one of her pockets: A little and encrypted comm-pad. She started to press the security locks; the software responded accordingly to what she wanted.

“Here…and here. Cruz, take this and read it; I should be going right now, my crew needs me. Nos vemos!”

“Wait! You didn’t even tell me what is this all about!”

Exasperated by the unprecedented behavior of the generally disciplined and cold Observadora, he questioned himself about the real motives of this mission. After Julia disappeared from his sights, Alberto studied the content received and before he could make an accurate conclusion of the matter, he glanced the two members.

“There you are! Alberto Cruz here!”

Trying to camouflage his nervousness and sweat, he waved to the men. Cruz had never exchanged words with them and the trio only knew each other by name and profile image only. Finally gathered, the briefing started, in the middle of a completely crowded area; but not before Cruz waited for a response from the members.

"Buenos dias. There you are."

The phalanx dispersed and surrounded the perimeter, weapons drawn. As they circled around, Juan motioned to the guards

"Don't worry, they're just here for protection."

The lead guard spoke. Affirmative. We are here for Senor Harabero's personal defense.

Juan looked around, then back at Cruz. "So, you wanted me for something? It sounded pretty important, from what I heard." Captain Harabero crossed his arms.
"Looks like you brought someone else too. I assume he is here for the meeting?" Juan leaned in and looked at the both of them expectantly.

"Well, tell me what you wanted to. I'm all ears."

Santiago finds the others and is a bit nervous with the guards present but still goes into the circle. "Well, hola hermanos. Do tell what we are gathered here for." He was very curios as to what was going on.

Alberto Cruz did not expect the grandiloquent security team brought by Juan Harabero and he almost dropped the valuable item delivered by López, in full consternation. He felt strangely comfortable staying near Santiago Rosario, who arrived alone. He breathed deeply and recomposed himself and, before he could form words, he read the comm-pad silently one more time, to be sure that the mission is exactly as he was seeing.

“Well, let’s get this started. We have some Maltese lost, but not common ones. They are our Asesinos…you know, the expendable ones. After a group of them was sent into an expedition deeper in Omicron Beta, we lost contact with them. Telemetry from Ruiz confirmed it…And before you ask…yes, an additional group of Asesinos were sent after them, to check the situation. They got lost, too.”

Ashamed of what was reporting, as if he was the one to blame for this; he continued:

“Alpha Command wants to know what happened to them. Of course, finding out if they are alive or not is not the main goal here, but we need to check what is going on in…”

Cruz displayed the small device to the rest; a map of the surveyed sector can be seen. He pointed out the zone with the precise coordinates, a sector located in the western side of Beta; a place beyond the mysterious alien gate.

“Have you been there before? Not really a transited space, it seems. Those guys went really far away. Do you think they tried to defect? No, that would be stupid. Why going there, though?”

Odd silence erupted from Cruz, as seconds passed, trying to think a possible explanation. Lastly, he simply said:

“Well, any questions? The transmission from the last Asesinos went out 1 hour ago. So, we should move on soon before the trace goes cold.”

Juan Harabero's features melted away as his expression turned firm. I must admit, that is unexpected. Even for the Asesinos.

He took a breath, then continued on. Guards, you are dismissed. Please transition to the outer rooms.

Copy that. Guarding the outer area.

Juan almost felt relieved. If they were to be discussing confidential information, it would be best to do so in private.

I know not much of that area, though perhaps some of my crew might know a bit more. I will attempt to find anything I can.

A silence went over the room, and Juan attempted to break the silence.

From my days in the good ol' sabre, I know that aliens and AI can be frequent in that area. Perhaps that could bring something to light?

I've heard Order vessels have also been sighted in the area

Santiago was very curios as to how this would turn out and he hoped that he would not be among the missing if he was asked to scout.

Good thing my Sabre has a cloak

RE: Relaxation in Death - WiseTaurus - 05-18-2022

“Aliens, AI, Order? Did I miss something important? I thought there were only GMG vessels trying to take over the system for their own interests. I guess, I was the one that knows nothing here.”

Cruz tried to contain himself as he did not want to reveal his fears regarding the unspeakable challenges that they could be facing soon. Still, somewhat skeptic to what he heard; Cruz decided to continue the conversation and trying to avoid going deeper on the dangers involved:

“A Sabre with a cloak? Santiago, are you afraid that some horrible outcome would come from this?”

Not sure is he was trying to be sarcastic or displaying his already assimilated frightening, Cruz finished his babbling:

“Anything else? We should get prepared now. As we do not know what we will encounter, we should go with minimal support and people. I’d advise you to go in fighters…se-señor Harabero; ar-are you ok with this?”

Alberto’s hasty recommendation did not satisfy himself, as he remembered that the couple of members surpass his current rank in the organization, according to their profiles. He was especially intimidated by Harabero and his guards, as he was not accustomed to deal with such a multitude.
