I was wondering how do you fade on picture into (or just fade it out)
Like directional, horizontally, vertically, radial etc?

theres a lot of way to do it. With an eraser with 0 toughness is the easiest way. otherwise, you can try gradients, by putting one side' opacity to 0; with gradient, you can do vertical, horizontal, radial, any angle you wish, plus reflective, and some other fancy stuffs.

I tried doing the gradient like you said, but I reduced the opacity on both to 50% but I put white on one side and black on the other, so the image which had some of it's fill put to 50 shows up more prevalent. I did that with this sig.Too bad the admins R TEH SPACE WHORING NAZIS!!1!! Ahem, But keep going anyway is helpful. Although does the toughness/hardness factor apply to marquee/DEL is well?

How'd they jump up the lighting effect in these pictures? The lighter areas got shinier.

Keeps the layer unharmed and you can 'play' more. You can of course just copy the original layer, but the point stays, layer masks let you play around, which is good.
@Colonel Zero: the 'shiny' effects can be achieved in different ways: you can increase the contrast, you can create a black/white-gradient-filter above the layer and use 'Multiply', 'Soft Light' or similar filters. And you can of course use the Levels and Curves tools.

Layer mask work perfectly in fading it...but say I wanted to make the white a green so the remaining visibility has a greenish tint?
