The Gallic National Intelligence

Newly reformed and restructured alongside the rest of the Union, Gallic National Intelligence operates in all facets of Gallic society to protect the nation. Answering only to the office of the Minister of Defense, one of the highest representatives of the Gallic Union, the GNI operates independently from the Gallic Combined Fleet.

Facilities

The GNI fields a significant amount of operatives and vessels, including several capital class assets, such as Battlecruiser Sisteron. Starting out as a Royal Intelligence vessel, Sisteron is a signals intelligence and forward operating base dedicated to patrolling the Taus near the Royalist bastion in Roussillon, working around the clock to keep an eye on the rebellious elements there, as well as a return of the aliens that assaulted Orkney.

The GNI also operates multiple research facilities, such as Evreux Research Facility in the Orleanais system, now the de facto headquarters of the GNI following the restructure after the civil war. This facility is so highly classified that even the vast majority of the officers and agents in the GNI do not know what happens there on an operational level, and more than a few civilian ships that have strayed too close have never been seen again.

Organizational Structure

The GNI follows a fairly simple ranking structure to facilitate the easy organization of personnel, not having nearly as much of a bureaucratic quagmire of other organizations within the Union. It also operates strict security clearance levels, one of many filters to enforce a high level of security amongst the agents, officers and civilians contractors in employ of the GNI.

Security clearance is renewed on a regular basis to maintain the security of all facilities, protecting operatives as well as the agency itself, and to minimize the risk of potential conspirators collecting data for personal gain. Operating on six levels of clearance, levels range from from Tier-0 to Tier-5, with Tier-5 being the highest possible level of clearance. An agent with Tier-1 clearance will not be able to access Tier-3 data for example, without an agent with that same level of clearance supervising them.

National intelligence only responds to the Minister of Defense for the Gallic Union, as a result Gallic Navy elements have been known to end up under the command of the GNI during operations in the field. The Gallic Navy does have their own independent intelligence gathering apparatus, but is also dependent on the GNI's intelligence and reports for information from further afield, thus GNI assets can frequently be found working in concert with the Navy to further overall security for Gallia.

Positions in the GNI

Director

The Director is the highest-ranking agent, and also holds the rank of Admiral within the Gallic military. They Director is responsible for managing and overseeing the operations of the agency, and are in charge of all administrative functions as well as overseeing all external communications. They have a full view of the GNI and the highest security clearance, Tier-5, and are widely considered the single most important agency asset. They do not take action personally, as far as anyone else in the agency is aware that is, but no agent would be able to reach this position without significant experience in the field.

Deputy Director

The Deputy Director is the Director's right-hand, and also holds the rank of a Rear Admiral. They manage the various sections and are responsible for the development of assets and the monitoring of progress of the agency's overall goals. Like the Director, they have a full view of the GNI and are considered critically important assets. They also do not see action personally, unless a situation calls for it. They hold a Tier-5 security clearance.

Section Chief

The Section Chief manages a Section, typically an orbital station or a larger vessel, though the GNI also operates several terrestrial facilities on planets like New Paris or Orleans. They hold the rank of a Capitaine, and are frequently brought up from the ranks of the SIOs that serve under them. Section Chiefs are known to lead field operations at times, particularly during the most critical of operations. They hold a Tier-4 security clearance.

Senior Intelligence Officer

SIOs are almost exclusively the most experienced agents in the GNI, with most having careers spanning multiple decades, and hold the rank of Lieutenant. They typically lead teams of other agents in the field, and are expected to get results. No Senior Intelligence Officer has ever been taken alive by an enemy, and on the rare occasion that one is temporarily captured, things very quickly go wrong for the people holding them. They hold a Tier-3 security clearance.

Intelligence Officer

A skilled officer and analyst, Intelligence Officers make up the vast majority of the GNI. Intelligence Officers have a wide variety of duties. Some mostly do desk work, taking data passed on to them by Analysts to form actionable intel. Others carry out operations based on this intel, working in the field directly, while some gather data directly from HUMINT sources. They hold a Tier-2 security clearance.

Analyst

Analysts are the lowest ranking members of the GNI, frequently made up of fresh recruits and the occasional transfer from the Combined Fleet. They hold a security clearance of either Tier-2 or Tier-1, depending on their background. They are often assigned to supporting other officers during operations, and have generally no access to any information in its totality.

Support

Civilian contractors that work for the GNI, and recruits from the Navy that have not yet hold sufficient rank and accreditation are given the role of support. They support operations, prepare ships and equipment. They have no equivalency in the Navy, and are given a security clearance of Tier-0.

Modus Operandi

The GNI makes full use of its extensive arsenal and manpower to protect the Union. It is allowed to operate beyond the law, and more often than not the GNI uses questionable and unethical, but effective methods to gather and process the information. Many unorthodox, questionable and controversial methods are employed by the GNI, as they are willing to use extreme measures - including violence - to achieve their goals. These methods may be controversial with the common people but they are necessary in order to maintain the safety and security of Gallia. The GNI is careful to ensure that any actions taken are justified and that collateral damage is kept to a minimum.

Many agents, operators and officials also operate within the Gallic Union under other designations. The Gallic Navy, for example, is not exempt of the prying eyes of the GNI. Virtually no strata of the Union, as well as its civilian population, is free from surveillance. The GNI also extensively use experimental technology, such as cybernetic enhancements or artificial intelligence, to ensure the success of it's operations.

Factions Relations

The GNI follows it's own guidelines and relations with other factions, unlike the rest of the Gallic Union, making it ever-so-slightly different from the Union proper.
