Report: Execution of Vincent Abrams

The promised summary report.

Section 8 Wrote:Vincent Abrams was an independent scientist specializing in xeno research.

He was first encountered by a Section 8 recon ship in the Kepler system on 02.08.828 A.S. According to his own statements, he had ventured inside the Dyson Sphere in the Omicron Major system and succeeded in collecting physical samples of its constituent materials. He soon focused his research on the gravitational anomalies within the Kepler system - primarily the Prophet anomaly. While Section 8 made attempts to establish collaboration with Abrams, he was soon found working together with the Technocracy of Auxesia - specifically Keeper Revenant.

Despite Abrams' cooperation with the enemy, his apparent expertise regarding the Kepler anomalies and sudden sightings of both Nomad as well as what would later be designated Sentinel warforms led Section 8 to tolerate the continuation of his efforts. However, close observation of Abrams and the Technocracy revealed that Revenant's influence over him was growing too great. Section 8 ordered a precision strike against Revenant (carried out by elements of Recon Unit Vigil) in an effort to take them out of the equation and weaken Abrams' ties to the Auxesians. While they were temporarily incapacitated, the strike failed to terminate them for good. Abrams' and Revenant's cooperation continued.

Further observation revealed that Abrams appeared to have some form of effect on the Kepler anomalies. The Prophet anomaly proved to be a worm hole similar in nature to common jump holes, which, however, seemed to only react to Abrams' presence. It was through this worm hole that the so-called Sentinels had entered Kepler and surrounding systems.

On 28.11.828 A.S., Overwatch successfully extracted Abrams from Liberty and its border systems, transferring him to Akabat for a collaborative project. As far as Section 8 was informed, nothing came of this, and Abrams returned to continue his work on the Kepler anomalies.

Section 8 was contacted by confidential informants who provided evidence suggesting that both Abrams and Revenant were, in fact, acting under the influence of a greater Nomad in an effort to release the Sentinels en masse and cause mayhem on an incalculable scale across Sirius [see attachments]. Further evidence provided by other trusted sources and gathered by Section 8 itself corroborated a connection between Abrams, Revenant, and the Nomads.

Deeming it too great a risk to permit Abrams to continue his investigations into the Kepler anomalies given his now exposed allegiances and goals, Section 8 was forced to terminate him. To this end, a strike was ordered and executed on 10.02.829 A.S. by elements of Recon Unit Vigil, the Xeno Alliance, and Section 8 [see attachments]. Abrams was caught alone in the Hudson system and his ship destroyed. No escape pod or other evidence of his survival was found and Abrams was deemed successfully terminated.

Following, the situation around Kepler quieted down. No further Sentinel incursions were reported and activity around the Prophet and other anomalies diminished. Terminating Abrams was determined a success.

On 28.11.829 A.S., a Section 8 operative encountered the mercenary Caliban in the Kepler system. Our operative was engaged in combat and shot down by this individual [see attachments]. Inquiries made with the Xeno Alliance revealed that Caliban is none other than Vincent Abrams [see attachments]. The unsuccessful attempt on his life appears to have significantly altered his mental state, resulting in intense aggression against both the Technocracy of Auxesia - Keeper Revenant in particular - and the Order - Section 8 in particular. Fortunately, the Xeno Alliance was able to negotiate a truce between Caliban / Abrams and Section 8, however, non-violent disruptive efforts by Caliban / Abrams continue unabated.

It is likely that Caliban / Abrams is still under Nomad influence and may even be infected.

End of report.

We hope this satisfies Overwatch's curiosity and are expecting the communications between your agent and Caliban to be shared in kind in the coming days.

Odysseus

Intelligence

First of all, I would like to formally thank you for sending us something to work with. I had to temporarily take mandated R&R at last and deal with personal matters. I am beginning to review your files, on top of Wedjat already having its greatest spooks into processing it as I speak right now. Wedjat as an institution is something I inherited from my predecessor and I continued to cultivate it in form as it was devised from the very beginning. Rather than lay the blame on someone not here, I would like to take full responsibility for any hostilities and slights you may have suffered from Wedjat. Admiral Solandros already had diffused the situation which he has my thanks for.

That saying I do not require you two officers to like each other. I’ve worked under verbally abusive bastards myself, and I do not expect everyone working with or under me to like me as a person. That in no way compromised my duty to my superior officer in my pre-HC days, no matter how unlikeable they may be. If you believe such tensions may however impact efficiency of your mission, this is when you call towards a higher instance. All I ask is that any pent up frustration is released on our enemies, or handled in the form of training. Hell, you can see each other in the ring if you can keep each other from sustaining any injuries that may get in the way of your duties.

As for the incident of the ‘hyperspace anomalies’, please understand that the way The Order Overwatch operates in a way to maximise chances of survival for the maximum number of people in an environment as dangerous as the Omicron sector. Fighters are expendable, capital ships that carry them are not. Diving into unstable jumpholes is very much within the modus operandi of our fighter corps. Dying on a daring recon mission or taking a hit for a carrier is expected behaviour where alternative would be losing the very station or ship our pilots set foot on after each sortie. That’s all for the justification behind the actions of my operatives. Merely different operating procedures for different theatres of war, I presume.

I cannot help but notice that one of your reports is heavily redacted. I believe this is the correct way to do it, considering the very… diverse list of recipients, Caliban of all people is on the list as well. I would like you to submit an Order Eyes Only version, as soon as humanly possible. It is paramount, Odysseus.

The Greater Nomad

While I am inbound to Akabat to discuss matters with Admiral Solandros, as well as leaders of Section 1, 2 and 3, I would like for starters to illuminate an affair which - as it seems - is beyond knowledge and experience of S8 section as a matter of goodwill. The Greater Nomad brought up is unmistakably Keeper Harbinger, the “first” Marduk-class Nomad warform. With original warforms of this type being disabled and/or destroyed during the course of 801 AS Nomad War, or in its immediate mop up operations, until the appearance of the ‘Harbinger’ The Order had maintained vigilance rather than engage in open warfare as we are accustomed to now. There was simply nothing to fight: Core was not yet a factor, Nomads were as defeated as in 801. Keepers are the beginning of renewed and most importantly organised Nomad aggression against humankind, approximately 814 AS.

‘Keepers’ is a name we branded this ‘new generation’ of Nomads. Warforms were very much what we had encountered in Nomad War, with exception of adapting equivalence of shields, making them more competitive threats. Heavy fighters were soon deployed… eventually leading up to the point we are in now. Keepers spurred massive build up and consolidation of the Black Fleet - the entity under direct command of what was later rebranded as Overwatch. To say I have familiarity with Harbinger is understatement. This Keeper possesses reach, powers and influence to not just intervene but straight up invade thoughts and dreams of those who had the dubious pleasure to spend too much time in its dreadful presence regardless friend or foe. Typically, Harbinger took a very personal form chosen for each victim individually. For example sharply dressed entities drawing from occult lore of Old Earth, or long dead relatives. If you will, I would rather not disclose chemical compounds, semi-classified protocols and psychotropics used to remove or shield Harbinger’s from the minds of our operatives, myself included. We have not combatted Harbinger or other Keeper entities directly for many years, making the ‘mind-numbs’ much less of a necessity these days. Consider it a most dire warning, from an Order veteran of close to 15 years. I have personal vendetta against this warship for killing my world.

Re: Report

Grand Admiral Golanski,

The personal temperaments of and relationships between members of Overwatch are none of our concern. What is of our concern is a productive partnership between Overwatch and Section 8. To this end, we expect a certain level of inter-organizational courtesy to be maintained, particularly throughout formal communications such as these. Fortunately, both you and Admiral Solandros have rectified the mistakes made by Inquisitor Machiavelli in this regard. Section 8 hopes future interactions between our cells will continue this course.

As for the conduct of your operatives in the field, there is indeed an apparent difference in our cells' modes of operation. Where you consider fighters and the lives of their pilots to be expendable, we do not. Our manpower and resources are simply too limited and therefore too valuable. Nevertheless, the Overwatch's modus operandi will not be questioned as far as it does not interfere with our own.

Section 8 is aware of Harbinger and his nature. Your warning is nevertheless appreciated,

As for an uncensored version of the data regarding Vincent Abrams' association with Harbinger being forwarded to Overwatch - I am afraid that is not currently possible.

Data Validation & DNA Scan

As I carefully examine this matter, it becomes increasingly evident that your initial oversight of our established protocols called for a more targeted response that aimed to address, and resolve the issue at hand. To this day, I am rather shocked at the manner in which you openly discredited our esteemed Commodore in open space, who, regrettably, recently passed away in combat. And yet, in the face of the questioning that's now happening, you persist in continually engaging in a discourse jammed with provocation, working under the delusion that such rhetoric will lead to advantageous outcomes.

If you continue on this path with that attitude, understand that there may be consequences that you'll need to handle. In the meantime, I would recommend that you demonstrate respect to the advices of those who have safeguarded the Order's integrity for nearly two decades. I trust you are well-acquainted with the identity, and significance of Wedjat. A handful of your endeavors have caught my attention, and I shall bring them to your notice, while it is apparent that I must enlighten you concerning certain unorthodox actions that have landed you in this fairly distasteful situation.

It is my duty to bring to your remembrance your past actions, which could have resulted in the untimely demise of seemingly innocent individuals, in the absence of a proper and comprehensive examination conducted by your operatives. Consider this a telling hint that exposes your evident ambitions to eradicate targets, despite the scarcity of substantiated evidence that would provide a legitimate basis for your intentions. The materials you have so brought forth stand in clear defiance of my initial words, wherein I plainly declared that materials drenched in excessive encryption shall not be considered fully legitimate. Let me, once more stress the character of transmitting uncensored evidence to fortify the authenticity of your activities. Timestamps included.

It perplexes me to entertain the notion that you have deemed the identification of the questionable redacted subject with whom your associated impossible, as your own men conversed with the subject to uncover this 'invincible feat.' Discretion suggests that such an undertaking is, in fact, entirely feasible. I carry suspicion that you conveniently forgot the individual's identity, whom you redacted while acquiring vast amounts of data, providing you with a convenient pretext to execute someone outside the Omicrons. As one of our last attempts, we request that you provide clarity regarding the details of this matter, including the identity of the redacted subject who appears to have been intentionally neglected. Are there any details or information that you have chosen not to disclose at this time? Your inclination for secrecy not only compounds the justification for these type of reactions but also lays the groundwork for potential concrete measures that may be taken that wouldn't favor you. Capiche?

Let me bring to your attention yet another matter. The subject whom you sought to execute remains clean of infection. Led by our operatives of the Wedjat division, the subject underwent rigorous testing, giving clear negative results. I presume you are also well-informed of the subject's presence at Akabat some times ago, during our "operations," so to say. Neither was there any direct evidence of contamination, nor any valid rationale to orchestrate his execution. Auxesia, with their self-imposed connection with the Vagrants, daringly attempted similar maneuvers. But I must inquire. Do you find yourself walking in their very footsteps? Our most recent examination has been carried out with a success, meaning no contamination was identified (Result: Negative). I also find myself pondering why an equivalent inquiry was not correctly executed or why, perchance, you neglected to request forward such an undertaking from the Order Overwatch. Countless more fruitful ideas were available for exploration, which regrettably you chose to disregard, leaving us with no recourse but to conduct appropriate measures on our own, especially in these unfavorable circumstances. We're eager to know the truth.

Disappointing

Inqusitor Machiavelli,

We are disappointed to discover that none of your superiors' charm appears to have rubbed off on you.

Section 8 will not entertain any further vague accusations or thinly veiled threats from you, nor will Section 8 disclose any further classified data. You may keep your opinions, speculations, and conjecture regarding Section 8 and its operations to yourself.

You will do well to remember that we serve humanity, not Overwatch, not Wedjat, and most certainly not you. As such, this channel will be closed following this communication. Future communications from Wedjat Section 1 will be disregarded.

Intelligence

Odysseus. You had requested precise logs of communications that took place between an Overwatch operative. Which I would not see normally as problematic for cells that exchange information freely between each other and the Overwatch. The Order Overwatch after all maintains not only an open arms policy but also the only Order-wide communication centre and archive for flight reports open for any and all operatives, regardless of rank or cell. We had let you run things in Kepler independently for over a year with trust that you had it in you to not disappoint your comrades. This is a sign of trust I’ve put in you, regardless of the few incidents that pitted our agents verbally against one another.

While you in your own words demand for and I quote “expect a certain level of inter-organizational courtesy to be maintained, particularly throughout formal communications such as these” which I certainly relate to, especially in terms of exchanging critical information in regards but not limited to: matters as important as death warrants, and evidence backing the irrevocable decisions your Command had made. If it was an act of self defence, or just another casualty suffered in the course of a war where you don't know the time or the bullet that has one’s name on it. Instead, it was a pre-planned, premeditated assassination.

Redacted report you provided is inadmissible and speaks against both of our professionalism as agents. Lacking something as basic as names: We are not able to check the integrity of the person you sourced your information from, nor verify claims this ‘person’ shared with you. In the best of situations, you had committed murder on account of a person of dubious state of mind. After all, who would refer to the Nomads in such colourful words as ‘Schemers’, ‘Elder’, ‘Wrathful’’? In the worst timeline, this might have been an infected, who are known to refer to their ‘Greater Minds’ in such cult-like vocabulary.

I personally refuse to believe any Order operative of sound mental faculties would be so callous as to hunt down a human being based on words and falsifications of an alien agent. Nomads and by extension the few humans who had betrayed their own species never had humanity’s best interests at heart, and that would extend to giving advice as to who deserves to die. It would be instead paramount to protect individuals that Nomads would seek to extinguish and check their significance to foiling these xenocidal monsters' plans. This is how we rationalise our attempt to sway Abrams to our side, to reduce the influence of our sworn enemy Auxesia on this individual. Considering Caliban considers their ilk to be hostile now - just like Section 8 due to and I quote “revenge”, we might have been at least partially successful in putting him at odds with Revenant.

However, the so-called Caliban or person known to you as Abrams: Wedjat investigates any and all angles and possibilities. Your failure in killing him is another matter not currently relevant to this discussion. What happened cannot be revoked any longer and we have to move forward. What matters right now is that he is alive and has accused Section 8 of collaborating with a known Nomad entity: notably the Gallic Battlecruiser Vatan. Caliban, who I can only trust within the field of fire of my own sidearm due to his fickle loyalties as his nature of a mercenary, fact right now is he recently helped some of my pilots in destroying vessels belonging to other known Nomad sympathisers. If it was written testimony against written testimony, I would be more inclined to believe you and disregard this as a thinly veiled attempt to disrupt Order’s unity. After all, Caliban’s right now is nothing more than a vigilante with a vendetta against his would-be murderers. However, when my Wedjat operatives receive only a heavily redacted report for purposes of investigating the case, they get suspicious that you are in fact hiding things from Overwatch, demanding co-operation and intelligence while offering nothing tangible in return.

I am once again asking you to provide untampered, uncensored materials concerning reasons behind assassinating of Abrams/Caliban. The sooner I can feed this to our analysing team under Inquisitor Machiavelli to process, the sooner I can close this case and we can focus our attention on what actually matters: killing more of those alien abominations. Trust is a two way street. If we cannot acquire the original copy, how can we be sure that you are not using our own, Order-wide available intelligence for settling scores and other potential nefarious purposes? I hope to be proven wrong, however not even Order agents are free from scrutiny when the stakes are the survival of mankind.

I hope the most pessimistic outcome is not real, and instead this is a well informed - albeit very eccentric - informant that is in no way or shape a tool or pawn for the Nomads. It's not just a matter of S8 or Overwatch: the entire Order could benefit from having access to this person with such detailed insider knowledge on the Nomad menace and further help us in turning the tide against them. I am sure that even Mr. Machiavelli himself would be relieved and make up for the harsh words used. In any other scenario, at least you two would not have to interact any longer as we learn our trust in you had not been misplaced after all.

Security Breach

Grand Admiral,

Regrettably, latest Overwatch activity has further eroded Section 8's trust in your organization. Overwatch has invited house military and intelligence into the very heart of the Order's space. You revealed not one, but two ingress points into the Omicron Mu system to both the Liberty Navy and the Liberty Security Force. You showed them the safe path through one of the Order's most important lines of defense. You brought them within scanner range of our home planet, Akabat. For details, see the attached report.

Section 8 is not certain whether this gross violation of the Order's security was due to a catastrophic lapse in Overwatch's judgement or due to Overwatch itself having been compromised. However, security protocols dictate that no further classified information is to be shared with Overwatch until this latest - and do please pardon my language - cock up is satisfactorily resolved.

Through your actions you have willfully compromised the Order's security, opened us up to Libertonian incursions, and endangered the entire Order and thus, by extension, all of mankind.
