Thanks to all of your votes and engagement, I am happy to announce that Discovery made it into the Top 100 for the Mod of the Year Contest 2023!
This means we've now moved through to the phase 2, with a second round of voting to decide the MOTY winner and the ranked position. Discovery is the only representative for Freelancer, so it's up to us to fly the flag this year!

Sadly ModDB doesn't list the exact date - just the year. C&C Reloaded is the only other mod from 2005 though, so 50/50 on us being the most geriatric.

You can find on ModDB page of CnC Reloaded that the first public beta was released on July 8th 2005

None, it's just publicity / recognition. Sometimes the contest is picked up by mainstream games media as well, which can help mods break through to new and wider audiences.
