Hello, I've just signed up and am hoping to join in on some space sim fun.
It's been many years since I last played freelancer online and I look forward to getting back into it.
I was really curious on the factions and I am unsure on which one I should join.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts or opinions on what would be the right faction for me.
I am strictly combat and exploration focused but would also like to do some trading escorting if I find a few friends who specialize in trading and need a decent guard.

Welcome to Discovery! One of the things you'll like is that you can join as many factions as you like! We have strict mining or trading corporations like Kruger/DHC/Samura/Kishiro or even angry miners gone pirate like Mollies! (Who can still mine gold!)

Welcome back to Freelancer, I am sure you'll really enjoy Discovery. In terms of factions, I would say go with whatever faction interests you most from the original game that also fits your prefered playstyle. You can join multiple factions so don't worry if you find one later you also wish to try.

Welcome back to Sirius. I just recently came back to Discovery after a long hiatus myself, so while I'm not familiar with most of the current player factions on the server, I will say that from what I've experienced in the past most factions tend to be welcoming and supportive.

In terms of factions, you're more than welcome to join multiple. Freelancer tends to have a few different factions covering the main archetypes in each region. For example, each of the Houses have their own corporate groups that cover mining and trading.
If you wanted to try out a faction that covers all of those activities (combat, exploration, trading, etc), you could try The Core. They're an amoral corporate group that operates in the deep Omicrons, mostly to grab alien technology and sell it off to the highest bidder. They're embroiled in wars with the Corsairs, Order, Nomads and others, and have mining bonuses for Iridium and Xeno Relics.
That might be a bit of a daunting starter experience though, as the Omicrons can be a bit savage!
