Question to escort-duty - Prototype - 05-13-2009

I have a question to the escort-duty:

The freighter / transport which is escorted lays under fire of a pirate.
The rules clearly say that the pirate can do everything he wants to make the trader understand as long as he didnt kill him.
So, the pirate can attack without any engagement notice if he wishes so (by the way, most pirates I encountered the last time where good RPers, and it was really fun even to be pirated, applause to the Pirate.inc or how they call themselves, made me laugh yesterday).
Does the escorting ship need to make an engagement notice when it attacks the pirate to protect the trader?
In this case, does the escort attack in "self-defense" when it engages the pirate as soon as he attacks the trader?

I am no fan of the Enganging-word, either I do the appropriate RP or not. But in this case, the trader I have to escort maybe killed by mistake just cause I am to slow with my keyboard in typing.

Before taking an escort job, simply create a preset /setmsg command. Saves the trouble.

Everyone must provide an engagement notice, EVERYONE. Including the pirate you mentioned, they must give notice. If you are joining a battle already in progress (such as between a trader and a pirate), minimal engagement notices, like the classic "engaging", are more acceptable.

Hmm.. /setmsg may be a solution... thanx for proposal.

Just use a preset

/setmsg 1 Warning this transport is under my protection. I will respond to any attack, consider this my engagement notice

Or something to that effect.

Pirates hit the lane quickly type /1 and your coverd, as they then know you will fire in defence of the trader.

Odds are if the escort is strong enough they'll clear out, unless they decide to lolwut the trader for having an escort, or decide to attack you instead.

Unless, of course, your in liberty space, then theres odds they'll have a lolerfleet standing by. I once was escorting, we were jumped by 3-4 fighters bombers, 2 gunboats (maybe 3 wasnt sure) and after a miniute a LH IFFd HF tagged OC dessie joiined the fight to attack the escort (me) as well. (at least I got a couple of the snubfighters, and damaged the lolboats)

Thats proably why I go to liberty so rarley tho, some great RP pirates, but way to many 'lol hay guiz lets gather an armada then pirate folks' type people who are mostly out to shoot stuff.

Why do people seem to find engagement notices so hard? Don't even need to /setmsg, just use a little sass.

you type in your engagement notice that this is your engagement notice?!

Because sometimes there just isn't enough time, especially when bombers are present that can destroy a target in seconds, and furthermore some people are not as dexterous as others so cannot type a sentence quickly enough. Put these two issues together and we have a problem.

I remember that, I was the trader in question. They didnt even ask for cargo/cash before killing me

I THINK they orderd me to surrender once after blowing you up, but they never specified who they were ordering either.

Quite simply, avoid liberty unless in a capital or a bomber, or in a group, as the pirates there just want to lol it up. (yes, not all do, most are good, and some are DAMNED good RPers, but the majority of the bad ones are there too)
