Maquisard assault makes strong statement in wake of Treaty of Oerlikon |
New Paris, Ile-de-France System - In a shocking display of force rarely witnessed since the declaration of the Gallic Union, the Maquis movement has launched a lightning attack on the Gendarmerie security cordon spanning Ile-de-France's jump gate network, which has been set into place following the ratification of the Treaty of Oerlikon earlier this year. Tempers on Planet Marne in Champagne, a hotbed of populist sentiment, have flared dramatically in response to the damage that the free trade agreement has wreaked on the Gallic metals industry, with more Rheinland competition expected to follow as time goes on.
I myself was interviewing disgruntled shipbreakers on Chalons-en-Champagne Station to help get our heads around those grievances when suddenly the local alerts broke word of the Maquis assault. That boiling discontent had finally begun to show its teeth, in response to what one anonymous GMS shift manager called another "spurning of the Gallic people, with all their militant posturing".
On the scene in Ile-de-France, a battle between opposing strike groups of Union Navy and Maquis rebel capital ships erupted into total devastation in sector C5 between Planets Dreux and Meudon. In a brazen display of fleet maneuvers, the rebel capitals outflanked and surrounded the responding Union warships, disabling them. Now commanding the field beyond the system's static defense grid, they laid utter waste to the Gendarme cordons going towards Orleanais, Picardy and Languedoc before regrouping in the Saint-Cloud field to strike at the Provence blockade, with such speed that scarce few security forces could keep pace.
A brave defense was mounted at the Provence gate by combined Gallic Naval Intelligence and Gendarme forces, but without any sign of reinforcing heavy capitals from the Gallic Navy. The Maquis delivered a deadly blow to both the Provence and Champagne blockade cruisers, before withdrawing in force towards the Chevreuse Asteroid Field, Union fighters in hot pursuit.
The damage, however, had been done.
Terrifying political violence would give any reasonable House citizen cause for alarm, but for the people of Marne, vindication seems to rule the air. The mood on Chalons Station reflects this, where even now the once famed flagship of the Council, Battleship De Grasse, awaits either refit or deconstruction. A comment made by one Ms. Marvingt follows: "If they will not take our livelihoods seriously after the cursed compromise, they bring this on themselves."
Time will tell what lessons the Gallic Union intends to take from these troubling events.
