[Unofficial Event] Deathrattle | RM/MND/RFP+Bundschuh+Dragons/GMG vs Corsairs/UN - Barrier - 02-09-2025 ![]() After the flight of the battlecruiser Penitence and her battlegroup through Rheinland, Bundschuh patrols out of Bielfeld base discovered a curious thing. Where before penetrating into the Nordsee cloud meant an almost certain death or capture from the rabid Corsair patrols, recent weeks have allowed multiple pilots to remain there, almost unmolested. Fearing some kind of an elaborate trap, the Bielfeld administrators were at first reluctant to send in a proper scouting force, but the passing days and the reduced quality of the Corsair opposition decided the matter. An 8-man force, all volunteers, were tasked to infiltrate deep into the Nordsee, and attempt to map out the area surrounding the Sigma-13 gravitational anomaly. All involved knew, from rumors and the little amount of chatter with the Hammersee forces, that the Corsairs were well-established inside the nebula. But what the patrol leader eventually discovered, with no small amount of astonishment, that the so called Corsair forces consisted of a skeleton group of clearly aging vessels, who made a half-hearted attempt to drive off the scouting party. Not willing to risk the valuable sensor data extracted by the overtuned packages mounted on each ship, the Bundschuh force retreated back towards Bielfeld, only losing a man in the process - an unheard of result. The installation inside Nordsee, along with its paltry garrison, was now firmly pinpointed as a vulnerability. With the feared Corsair reinforcement potentially mere days away, a decisive plan of action was called for. The more aggressive elements of the hastily assembled council were all in favor of putting together a battlegroup to eliminate the station, but cooler heads prevailed. "Why should we risk our own people in this endeavor, when the foolish Emperor will do our dirty work?" - they argued, and smiles finally broke out in the stuffy conference room, as a unanimous vote confirmed the ploy. A pathetically simple leak was developed: the request for reinforcements from Vogtland for a new offensive against the weakened installation. The lack of encryption on this message was hardly questioned by the Military listening posts at Schwerin, putting the error down to an overeager operator, the fiction maintained by employing the untrained administrator's son in dictating the message. The information contained within was swiftly propagated across Rheinland security channels, with the regional commanders all being in agreement about the need to hurt the Imperio, and fast. The operation would be spearheaded by the rising start of the Rheinwehr, Kapitan zur Zee Holzner, whose views about the sigmas remained as plain as those of his forefathers in the 80-year war. Meanwhile, the situation on Petra was swiftly deteriorating. After the blame assignment for the failed blockade of the approaches that almost came to a full-scale firefight between competing crews, the station administrator decided on the safest course of action. The Rheinlanders would be coming - maybe not this day or this week, but soon. And unless the many-times requested reinforcements finally arrived, all those in the garrison would die a glorious death, with the station itself falling into the hands of the enemy to boot. With the latest terse reply from Crete, commander Juan Jose Segura finally decided to take matters into his own hands. A brief communication to his counterpart at Lagos confirmed their support, despite the fools on Crete not bothering to send even the unblooded warriors. With the addition of a number of well-compensated artifact smugglers, an evacuation was looking more and more feasible. And the Rheinlanders, when they came, would receive a very nasty surprise inside the shell of the abandoned station... When the artifact convoys, along with their oversized escort, first failed to arrive at Newport, the GMG captains hanging around the area shrugged their shoulders and blessed the vagaries of fate. But after a third missed shipment, their celebratory mood began to wane. The Corsairs would never give up their route of poison into Kusari, and the continued existence of multiple stand-by wings was already being eyed by the Guildmasters as a needless draw on already stretched resources. With the goal of justifying their continued existence, the wing commanders put their heads together and developed a simple plan - an exercise, retracing the most common routes back to their source at the Sigma-17 terminus. With a wing of a Dragon strike force refitting after their Omicron adventures, the timing could not be better for a fresh offensive. What they found was particularly telling: the same security forces previously seen with the convoys were still escorting ships, but deeper into the sigmas, towards Rheinland. With a snap decision, the false training exercise became a real assault, with the aim of inflicting as much damage as possible to the reduced Corsair forces. The Petra commander's newly jubilant mood lasted only until the end of the week, when the first ships of the hastily assembled "Petra expedition" from Frankfurt and Sigma-15 made their appearance in scanner range. And the forces promised to him for the evacuation were suddenly diverted back to Lagos with a high-priority distress call. However, some were able to be browbeaten into honoring the previous agreement, with the right inducements to the rest to get them back into the system as soon as they could be spared from Lagos. The fight was on, and only the dubious bravery of the enlisted smugglers would hold the thing together - or leave the spoils of the previously critical invasion staging point in the hands of the Rheinlanders. Commander Segura's eyes were bloodshot, and he continued mumbling to himself as he watched the sensor readings. The last convoy left hours ago, and could be expected by now, if fate was kind. This week, it seemed, it was not. Over days of around-the-clock blockade running, less and less ships reported back after each sortie. With lesser men, he would have assumed desertion long ago, but these were his brothers from Lagos! Some of them he knew for over ten years, as they won victories against the Rheinlanders and outwitted the GMG. But now, all that would come to an end. He took another swig from his bottle of bacardÍ, and smashed it against the console in frustration. In this dreaded calm, a Zoner captain somehow managed to moor. He remembered his men looking questioningly at him when all realized what it meant. All it took was a single nod, and the control room was cleared. Men and women slapped him on the back as they left, and some even pleaded for him to join them. But Senor Segura knew that his life was essentially over. The damned Elders pulled his best people, and the Rheinlanders were as aggressive as ever, but failure was not an option. As the console pinged a warning, Segura finally allowed himself a bitter smile. The fools would try to board, instead of bombarding him from a distance. He may have done the same in their place, when he was twenty years younger. He watched the team on cameras, first proceeding cautiously, and then picking up speed when they encountered no resistance. Other ships were coming closer, though most did not dare disobey a previous order of maintaining perimeter that he translated. It was too bad - if the Rheinlanders hated the GMG as much as they hated the Imperio, he may have done more in the chaos. But a man plays the hand he's dealt. He saw a smaller team peel off towards the command deck - HIS command deck. He stumbled over to the duty station, and flipped a switch. In a slurred voice, he yelled over the emergency channels, "Now we will all go to hell!" and laughed. He was still laughing when he slammed his fist through the safety glass of the master console, and the button secured underneath. It was the last thing he ever did.
