I've had things floating near me for over an hour. If you move away, out of range, they vanish after about 30 seconds, I think.

Before I knew about transfers, I experimented on SP with leaving items and coming back. All of them dissapeered.

Oh, and if anyone finds that 200 Million in plastic I lost a few years back, just keep it. It'll bounce halfway across Sirius by now.
