English..? Please? - Fozzie - 06-13-2009 I see a real problem happening with people playing here that don't even have a rudimentary grasp of english. The translator programs ie Babelfish spew an unintelligible mess of syntax resulting in an almost complete misunderstanding most times. Maybe we should be more strict here in requiring understandable english? This is a RP server and it's awfully difficult to rp with someone using a translator. Todays forum topics are a good example, they read like translated chinese instruction manuals. English..? Please? - Linkus - 06-13-2009 If someone can type out a message in game from a translator through alt-tabbing, I congratulate them. That effort is immense for a single sentence. That said, the rules are pretty clear. English..? Please? - Faidd - 06-13-2009 Perhaps the biggest problem caused by this is those players who opt-out of general RP because of a lack of understanding of the English language, who stick to their small cliques and don't benefit the server as a whole. While this isn't strictly /bad/, though as you have said, this is an RP server and it is damn near impossible to RP with people who simply say "I can't speak English". I don't see any translations for the server rules and they appear in English by default, so these people are severly hampered in that respect. You only need to take a quick browse through the sanction reports and weigh up how many of them are caused by people who don't read the rules, or can't for whatever reason. I wouldn't be in favour of in some way barring them from playing with the rest of us, though I think there should be a movement for these cliques to set up servers of their own that run Discovery, which can then cater for their language. English..? Please? - johnpeter - 06-13-2009 In my opinion, the only rule that should be translated is the one saying only English speaking people are allowed on the server. On other servers, they can translate all of the rules. English..? Very true - especially about the sanction reports. Perhaps bi-lingual players could translate the rules to benefit others. English..? Please? - Friday - 06-13-2009 Mate, some of the ENGLISH speakers on this server have trouble with the language. Some people type in a manner used to represent an accent, others use big words that the kiddies at home might not understand. If a person is making a sincere effort they should be tolerated, and not heckled because of bad grammar. It is always amusing when some punk tells me to 'spek english!' when I say Konnichiwa to them... On the other hand, if they are using a lack of language skills as a reason to not interact they should be heckled mercilessly! English..? Please? - Maint72v - 06-13-2009 well not all is good at englsh including me, anyway wen people say Konnichiwa (Kusari) or Guten tag or whatever (Reindland) it is bekaus of RP, not bekaus it is there languitch i always say: Sorry for some englsh words, i am bad in englsh English..? Please? - Faidd - 06-13-2009 A good example would be this thread. In this screenshot we see someone saying "What? I don't speak English. I'm Russian". No attempt to RP, just a "leave me alone, I don't understand." Time for this to change I would think. English..? Please? - Errant.Venture - 06-13-2009 Well I personally Commend anyone who took the time to: 1. Alt tab to use a translator(as said above) 2.Make a whole hearted attempt to RP, with a limited grasp of the english language. or at least as far as syntax First off i would like to say, yes it can be difficult, yet it is often rewarding and fun, to have players on that have rudimentry grasps of english syntax, or whose primary language isnt english... for example, last night it cracked me up, when some one started typing russian, nothing extreme just a few words... The amusing thing was that instantly, ppl started spamming ENGLISH!!! about a minute later, the person typing in russian, simply replied, i wish to use my native language....to which myself and a few others, used it to RP...Saying things such as IS That Nomad? or, that such a language is rarely used... now i understand that not everyone can fluently speak english, but a vast majority understand it...Russian Syntax, i know cuz ive been trying to learn it using rosetta stone, is different and much simpler...once you start to learn it. Now i know it does say English is the primary language, as most games are, since english is the primary language used these days, but we should try to be a tad more understanding to reasonable players. Also....RP Translator? i find it hard to believe that sleeper ships left the old world, flew millions of ppl to sirius, and there werent language problems...This would be a perfect opportunity for a polyglot to step in, make a translating service, and charge a minimal fee... English..? Please? - Maint72v - 06-13-2009 Englsh is a international lagouitch isnt it, even if some dont speak it or hasnt lernd it Sorry for some englsh word, my englsh is bad |
