So i am brand new to the whole Discovery Mod but have been playing frelancer for a long time. So i read that the discovery mod is suppose to have a storyline while in non-open single player, i have downloaded the mod and have been playing it but no storyline... how do you start the storyline?

You can not play the storyline with Discovery 4.85. It has built in Open SP. Open SP means that it removes the storyline from the singleplayer game.
If you want to play the storyline, you have to play Freelancer with either no mod or an older version of Discovery, the latter of which I don't recommend, due to balance issues.
Just play it unmodded for the storyline.

Version 4.84 of discovery and below allows you to play through the same campaign as in vanilla but with all the new ships and weapons. Because of the rebalancing to accommodate these ships and weapons some of the storyline missions are very difficult or impossible. You can adjust the amount of damage you take in singleplayer to compensate for these missions.
Discovery itself has a storyline which continues that of the orignal freelancer. It can be found in the RP sections of these forums and in the bar news, and various descriptions in game.
