Why aren't Pirates required to follow the engagement rule! They sit at trade lanes, when you come by they stop the lane. When you try to escape they shoot you immediately without announcing an egagement.

THE RULE READS AS FOLLOWS:
Attacking without an engagement notice is not allowed. All attacks must be preceded with some form of RP, (HOW MANY FORMS OF RP ARE THERE), regardless of NPC Faction diplomacy.

Pirates feel they don't have to obey this rule! So why do the others when it comes to attacking Pirates!
Pirates can detect another ship as far away as 14k. By the time you give notice of engagement they are fleeing and claiming that no engagement was possible because the attacking ship wasn't close enough. Try typing in some of these names as welll as the word engagement its almost impossible to start an attack!

This engagement rule is not RP! In the original Freelancer game you will never find a notice of engagement, that because it's a true RP game.

It was implemented to stop people insta-killing people who had no idea they were going to be shot. For example, mercs killing lawfuls/unlawfuls with no warning. It's there (afaik) to help people enjoy their play, and not to have it interupted suddenly.

Quote:6.19 Pirates have a right to deal as much damage as they see fit before or after demanding money from a trader ship, but killing trader ship before demanding money or cargo is not allowed.

Pirates are allowed to open fire before giving notice, but they can't destroy you without talking. However they should start RP'ing before shooting, the most I'll ever do before speaking is fire a CD to stop the trader.

I typically scream at traders to stop about 3 times before I open fire, then another 3 times more before I kill them. I mean, if their just running without any roleplay or talking, what are you supposed to do? The rule was implemented so that the pirate could destroy some of the trader's hull while keeping him alive so the trader couldn't just run with full hull.

Someone shooting CD at pirate or smuggler before giving engagement notice shouldnt be a rule violation because it would be impossible to stop them from leaving your ZOI, if the person pretends to be AFK. Unless the CD is shot in a shorter time afterwards than a notice would make sense anyway.
Shooting the shield down after asking for money isnt a rule violation, especially when the victim starts to thrust away, I consider the 'money or life' demand an engagement notice.
What about if you are simply CDed and not shot at after the pirate demand? You start thrusting away... the pirate can CD you more... but will have to shoot your shield down sooner or later because he cant stop you totally.
But... I had pirates rule-lawyering that I open fire without warning them first after they started shooting my shield down. The moment you open fire on somone, that person is entitled to self-defense.

if the pirate kills you without saying anything at all, then he has violated two rules, and can get in big trouble if you report them.(dont threaten to report people, it can get you sanctioend as well.)

and traders, while it is within the rules to open fire on pirates as soon as they cd you.... it is rude and does not give the chance for more roleplaying.

I have one rule and one rule only: NO RP NO PAY!

numberous Pirate players tend to use this "rule" to fire upon fighter and bomber crafts, to get an advantage in an fighter pvp.

it should be dropped compleatly.

i have met so many pirates, if i were to stop and give 2m to each i wouldn't be able to play at all
i prefer to die in a rp manner rather than completely kill the game for me by going bankrupt

i think it's fine, it just needs to be light fire or cruise disruptors

The rule says pirates can damage traders before making demands, not that they can engage without notice. You can make an engagement notice without making a demand.
