Trying to decide on a shipname... - Eppy - 07-02-2009

Okay. So. I hate to make two polls in a day, but this is going to influence an in-depth RP I'm in the process of writing, and I figure I should put it out here to see what people think, because I'm undecided and insecure. This is for an Outcast Dreadnought, and not a normal Outcast Dreadnought. This is going to be the one and only Maltese Intelligence Dreadnought, and possibly the only Outcast Dreadnought in the game that actually follows the infocard RP. This ship is going to hang around in a gas cloud somewhere and coordinate stuff and spy on things. Because I'm sick of sitting on top of Malta and yelling at people for humping the mooring fixture.

So, right now I'm arguing with myself over semantics. I've got two things to worry about - the ship's actual name and the ship's prefix. All of the names have some significance to me, I'll detail below.

1. Durufle - Maurice Durufle is my favorite composer, a Late French Romantic organist and choirmaster famous for his exceptional quality and tonal mastery of his small but very polished reportoire. He wrote several pieces that have a special significance for me.

2. Lusankya - Lusankya is the name of an Executor-class Star Dreadnought from the Star Wars expanded universe novels. She was originally used as a secret base for the director of Imperial Intelligence, which is originally what drew me to the name, but there are also the reasons it was selected originally for a Star Wars novel - it's a derivative of Lusitania, a ship which probably needs no introduction, and was selected to give a naval feel to the ship and be cool.

3. Bordighera - This is the name of a city in Northern Italy. Whenever I needed to refer to a stolen Outcast Dreadnought, or any Outcast Dreadnought in general, back in ye olde days of yore, I would refer to it as the Bordighera, as it was a cool Italian name. Making an actual MNS Bordighera would be kind of ironic, considering the purpose it was originally conceived for.

4. Messe Solennelle - This is the name of a mass written by another French Romantic composer called Louis Vierne. This is the name of my Pirate Transport, but that ship is essentially unnamed - it's still being established, and I assigned that name with the intent of it being temporary.

5. Romane - This is the name of a Symphony written for solo pipe organ by Charles-Marie Widor. I thought it sounded cool, in addition to being a very lovely piece.

6. Fantasia II - The original MNS Fantasia was my prized Outcast Guard Bretonian Battleship. This old girl got sold, much to my chagrin, because, simply put, she was undercapable and undervalued. People saw her under a 101st tag and went "WTF!? O.O" so I eventually made the hard decision to scrap her after two years of faithful service. This would be a revival as a true Outcast warship, which has a certain appeal to me.

7. Saint-Sernin - this is the name of a Cathedral in southwestern France, very close to the border of Spain, also famous for its large pipe organ. I thought it was appropriate due to both its closeness to the Spanish border, its Frenchness (Corsica is a French island), and its connection to some of the music I like (which, if you've gathered, is how I tend to name my ships)

My second thought is the ship's prefix designation. Most Dreadnoughts would go with MNS, but this might not be appropriate, since it's not a NAVY ship. I think those speak for themselves.

So! Help me out. The tone of this ship's name could greatly affect the tone of the story, so I don't want to get too deep into it before I decide what I'm going to do.

How about simply Sernin? That sounds better then all the others, and better then Saint-Sernin..

La Valette is one of Malta's greatest historical figures. The capital, Valetta, is named after him.

Alternatively, you could name it after the festival of Mnarja (check it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malta down the page)

I like Fantasia II, cause that two brings to mind number one - a ship and its predecessor for the price of one name, except sometimes it makes me think of the Disney film.

Why draw on Italty and France so heavily while ignoring the entire Arabic influence? I'll have a suggestion shortly.

Simply put, I'm not comfortable RPing that and I'm not a fan of Arabic culture. Hate to be blunt, but I'm an American, and that's how we are. I don't have a problem with it, but I'm not going to fly the MNS Sinbad because it doesn't work for me.

Thats idiotic, you're better than that Morgan.

You can't avoid it, Maltese is a Semitic language, it derives from Siculo-Arabic. Its in their names, language, culture and blood. You'relimiting yourself in so much a way that you on;y come off as biggoted and ignorant, which you are not in my opinion.

MNS-Xidew.il-Qada has historical reference, though Il Cantilena may work as a more tasteful alternative.

MNS-Thezan.Court

MNS-Francois.de.Vion

Thoughts, darling?

What about the British influence too? Malta's most common language is English, after all.
