Important Poll - BestFlyerHere - 01-26-2007 I've noticed that a lot of people are shield running, and i don't think its really an honorable tactic. Flame me all you want, but im just sick of it. I'm also not happy about newbs saying "It's not in the server rules thread, so its not a rule!". I tell them to look in their ID, but most of them have a FL ID. Tell me. Important Poll - Qunitinius~Verginix - 01-26-2007 No Pirating in Cruisers and Battleships is already in the server rules I belive. You just have to Look. And I agree, sheild running is really sad excuse for a fight. I think that if you retreate, you are NOT allowed to turn back and attack unless they are OUT OF SCANNER RANGE! that means that to attack again you have to be at least 4.5k or so away, and if the otehr person is chasing you, its pretty hard! Verginix Out Important Poll - Lt.Cmdr.Olsav - 01-26-2007 I think it is a valid tactic when outnumbered, or when one is low on nanos and bats. I mean they could just cruise disrupt you. Important Poll - Dab - 01-26-2007 I voted for Not Sure; Elaborate because I don't think it needs put in the rules, but something DOES need done about it. I have a similar feeling about it that QV does. If you cruise away, you STAY OUT of that fight. Your retreating. If you had run, it should mean your hull is sufficiently low, and shield gone. If you do it after shield falls, without hull damaged, thats shield running. If I cruise from a fight it is either to chase down someone else fleeing, or I'm retreating. I NEVER shield run. Its dishonorable. In capships, I usually focus on dodging more than firing back when my shield fails, but I do not engage my cruise engines. You shouldn't just fly to 4.5k then come back. If you engaged cruise, you should stay OUT of that battle entirely, waiting for the next to start up, after that battle finished. OR count it as a death even. You engage cruise for shield running, you lose a life. Important Poll - mohr - 01-26-2007 Well not pirating in a Cap ship is a no brainer, but I selected not sure on the shield running. primarily because I have not even engaged in PVP yet. Does the tactics of hit and run count as shield running? Is a battle group "falling back" to different location untill backup arives considered shield running? I don't have a clue, but if this is turned into a server rule, I can see people complaining about other people breaking the rules when they are just using sound tactics. Like I said not sure. Important Poll - pchwang - 01-26-2007 The problem with Shield running is that it is a *NATURAL* tendency. People do it without thinking that they are doing it sometimes. When you are in the heat of battle, and you shields are out, and you have no more batts... You do not go: "OMG! MY shields are DOWN! Oh no! I also have no shield batts! Thus, the logical thing for me to do in order to survive is...SHIELD RUN!" You more or less just hit TAB, or whatever key you have down as AB and try to avoid fire, which eventually lead to shield running. Once, I engaged two Bships with some guys. The Bships were outnumbered, but they also inadvertently shield ran. It was not their fault AT ALL, and I'm 100% sure that they did not purposely try to do it. They avoided fire, which led to shield running, and one Bship recharging shields almost back to maximum. I think that shield running is way to ambiguous to make a statute in Disco. People can interpret it so many different ways...like Mohr has his interpretation that Dab may disagree with. It should more or less remain a gentleman's rule. Important Poll - Fellow Hoodlum - 01-26-2007 Shield running ... Mmmm ... If you are running because you are getting your ass kicked, keep going and call it a day. Retreat and live to fight another one. Tactical sense ... But its a loss, take it, move on and stop whining. To most people its obvious when someone is 'shield running' to try to just gain time or an advantage, thats a pain, and pretty bad form in a capship. If you come into a fight, odds in your favour or not, please go with your plan and stick with it. Battles are won or lost on superior forces, tactical advantage, not coming into the fight and deciding you made a mistake, and trying every trick in the book to save face. This is of course Freelancer and not the real world, we don't have weeks to fight these battles. Stay or go ... Hoodlum Important Poll - onca - 01-26-2007 Ok I think we need to differentiate between "running" and "dodging". Does anytime your not firing against an enemy and dodging their fire counted as shield running? I don't think its dishonourable not to be constantly running into the enemy's fire, esp if your a fighter against a capship. OTOH running away (on cruise or burner/ek), and then entering back into the battle, is dirty. On the third hand, shield running advantages the enemy -- their shield re-energises, too. Unless of course its 2-on-1 or w/e. o. Important Poll - sushi - 01-26-2007 As has already been pointed out, "shield running" is a pretty vague idea. I have no problem with players running away, even if it is just to let their shields recharge before they return. At times, it may be cowardly and/or dishonorable, but at other times it may be the smart or only thing to do. Either way, I think it is a legitimate tactic. Annoying, perhaps. Overused, probably. But legitimate. Important Poll - Wolfpack98 - 01-26-2007 The Pirating in Cap Ships will be added to server rules, so that's a moot point anyway. As for shield running.. There are so many ways you could call someone on "shield running" and we can't really prove it unless someone's videotaping the fight. And that is *NOT* something we all can be doing. It also makes it harder for us to remain fair and partial. In my opinion, shield running is simply a gentleman's rule and should be upheld by the participants involved, however making it a server rule just adds more trouble to keeping the rules in place. |
