A newbies first week - Galacius - 07-06-2009

First ill start by saying if this is the wrong section to post this I apologize.

I had been looking for something to occupy my time, due to various circumstances I havent had much to do this summer and have been climbing the walls out of frustration. Then I stumbled upon this and it seemed good.

I started out as most players have, knowing precisely nothing and finding my way to the mining field behind erie. While back there collecting helium a certain fellow was needing miners for him. I figured this would be good and eagerly signed up, soon after He gave me my cut and I was about to head on my way, when he stopped me and asked me how much money I had. I quickly told him what I was so proud of earning from the mining plus what I had gotten from him (it was truly a paltry amount but it felt truly big at the time). A few seconds later he told me to follow him, where we proceeded to go planet manhattan and he loaned me the money to buy a gull and outfit it. I was truly shocked but the best part was to come. A merc (who I really enjoy being around and have learned a great deal from) was hired and he had me follow him as he did several smuggling and slaving runs. Each time he took a different route to show me which ways to go and where to avoid the patrolls.

Over the next couple days (was about monday of this week) I had paid him back and was generally having a grand time, and he said "hey lets pirate, I used to be a hardcore pirate on a different server" He had previously picked up a gunship and I was to follow him in a humble defender to malta to pick up a corsair gunship since it was white to our faction. This is where things started to go downhill and the rosy dream faded.

Before I go on I must say I had seen the Liberty ships in all their majesty and was furiously trying to make heads and tails of the wiki so I could write up my own rp for a capital ship. Trouble was I had a love for the junker faction, but this will be elaborated more on a few paragraphs down.

But back to the main story at hand. The Pirating was fun at first, but it quickly deteriorated. He was sanctioned repeatedly for simply pirating, and it made no sense, he seemed to be doing it right most of the time, the merchants who took afront at it would mouth off not stop or just simply sit there stalling only to be furious when they were terminated when their time ran up. But I can understand the rage, I have played mmorpgs for years upon years and I know how angry people can get, but you know? When that happens they handle it quite differently.

This story happened in WoW on a rppvp server. Some people on the other side where having an event, me and a friend happened to be doing our rp out on the island while occasionally picking fights with the other side. We met, we anihalated them and they were probably most likely furious. But do you know how they handled it? The called in favors and brought in a merc glad team. To be a merciless gladiator in wow you have to be the top .01% of the arena which is probably the most difficult thing to do (at the time skill has left wow now) in the game besides get world first kills. They came, SLAUGHTERED us and stayed until we were beaten to the point that we went back to a friendly town to lick our wounds, no hard feelings either side besides mild gloating and "UNTIL NEXT TIME" all around.

Coming from this I have been shocked. Me and my mentor have been told "Enjoy it because this will be your last day playing on this server", "Hey that ship isnt legal for you, you better stop if you know whats good" (when I have a great rp story that when finished i will put up (corsair gunboat)) as well as furious anger people coming back to systems they were killed in and much cursing. I was most simply shocked, I really began questioning things at this point and my dream of defending the junker bases in a cruiser if people could get away with this stuff kind of stuff, what would stop some jealous or angry person from making all that money go down the drain.

Though this was pretty horrible not everything was bad, infact some things were excellent! [taz] helped me understand the error of my ways quite nice and civilly (I had developed quite an attraction to the l'ane (almost to the point of obsession you know) and they explained the huge flaws in my rp story after i told it to them why it was and filled me in on a lot of the lore, they even let me bombard them with newbish questions! (though it was not all grand as I was being instructed kindly by them people who were rping (and honestly it was obnoxious rp) were quite rude to me about it untill I explained to them I knew already and was going to fix it). My mentor was another big positive, as well as meeting shagohad and finnegans.wake The rp those two could do and how cool of guys they were (They even put up with a noob bursting at the seems with question). Also all the junkers I met where extremely cool and I had good rp or nice talks with them (im quite fond of escorting junker traders if im in my gunboat). Even the outcasts where interesting when I brought up a load of slaves, it was grand and helped offset how shocked I was at how badly pirating had gone.

The last few days have been more of a rollercoaster, having cool rp or protecting a junker, running goods, getting threatened, snotty tells, or just rule lawyered constantly (the worst is when I went window shopping for possibly cruiser candidates). I honestly am a bit torn I am loving some of the people, the ship designs are amazing and I love seeing them all (ohh gallian ships you call to me like a warm woman and a nice drink, but you have such cursed thorns), the wonderfull people I have met are the most holding factor and the fading dream of having a cruiser and patrolling around a junker base (plus all the rp with it) still hangs with me and keeps me here.

But here lies the rub, I find myself getting irate and quite frustrated with the skinny peacocks that meander about on this server. Stroking their egos and screaming the second you threaten something of theirs (whethere it be their sense of rp through your ship choice, your location or just that you pirate them or stand up to them). The proverbial venom has been wearing me down, and honestly im not well and shouldnt be this frustrated, I need to be taking it easy and getting my strength back for college. One can say though that being frustrated is somewhat of a compliment to this game and the people I have enjoyed, it shows I care enough about them and this game to be frustrated by it and keep coming back even though I want to stop.

Anyways thats really it, my first weak in a nutshell. I ask you please dont mind spelling or grammar errors, Im writing this with many other things on my plate so my attention is....well scattered and I would hope you allow me this feeble excuse.

I love this game so far but some things truly bring this newb down, and I dont know how to avoid it.

Find people who are decent and focus your energy on them. There are a few here who will never accept anyone or anything new they disagree with and they aren't going to disappear.

Best way is to befreind new players like you were and work on teaching them to be good players and spending time with them. That's the most rewarding. Good luck.

Well, I very much enjoyed that. I am glad to hear your experiences have been mostly positive, or at least that you focus on that.

As for what to do about rule lawyers and certain players, I wish I knew what to tell you. Mostly I try to know the rules better then them, but I dont pirate, so I can imagine it being worse while doing that. Other than that, I generally ignore the people who try and ruin the fun for everyone else. If it seems they just dont know any better I will try and talk with them and explain how their behavior effects others, but usually they dont want to listen.

Mostly what I do is talk to my disco friends when something really irks me. Other than that I just try and be patient and work very hard on my RP so it is nigh impossible for people to reject. The wiki helps, though I use a lot of other tools and do a lot of research. If you dont want to do all that, I find asking faction leaders or higher ranking faction members for help to be a good idea.

I hope the fun you have here outweighs the annoyances. If you ever need help or have something to say you can post here (as evidenced today especially) or feel free to hit me up on skype. I also run a chat room on skype especially for new players, where you can ask all the questions you like and meet a lot of really nice people from the community. If your interested and want to know more hit up the link in my profile.

See you around,

I just wish more newbies were like you. I always try to help newbies by explaining things to them, but most just say something like "I bought this ship so it's my right to fly it" or just stay silent >_>. Or lolwut around.

Oh, and I feel for you. I had quite a few troubles too when I first joined Disco. I did weird things too that I thought they would be in RP - for example, I once docked on California Minor with my Hacker GB to escape death at the hands of a Xeno, and when he asked me why I did that in private I RPed out that I hacked the docking rings:D. Luckily, he talked to me instead of filing a sanction report (if you're reading this, big kudos to you).

A very good thing to do if you're new, but are familiar with RP is to join a player faction. It's a lot of fun, and you'll quickly find new friends and people you enjoy going online with. You'll also get MUCH more RP that way - trust me, when I joined my first real faction (Keepers, I believe - after playing for a year or so) Disco really became much more fun for me.

Ah, hell... It really irks me when new people get the impression that half of the server is floating about stroking their egos. *sigh* But that's the way things seem sometimes.

Oh well. Welcome to Discovery, mate. Hope your times are as rosy as they were at the beginning and towards the end. Good luck, good flying.

Welcome to the forums and to Discovery.
I know it's hard to believe but there ARE good times and people here.
I have never been sanctioned yet, since I still re-read the rules many times and follow them as best I can.
But I still get lectured on my RP, or yelled at for pirating in a good (Bad haha) way
by those who think they know, but actually don't.
I got pissed off with politics interfering with good roleplay, and personal attacks and took a six month break.
I've even made some personal attacks myself, to my shame.

But there is great stuff in Disco.
Build relationships with those you want to play with.
Search for those people that you think play well. Ignore the rest. Ignore the flames. Ignore the whining.
Read the forums very lightly. You're better off not knowing certain things.

Never lose your naivety. Enjoy the game. Help others.
Show respect to those who curse and yell at you.
Obey the rules. Listen to the admins.
Don't take things personally. Don't make things personal with others.
Enjoy the game.
Take time off if you need it.
Enjoy the game.
When you feel bad have a look at the wiki.
REnjoy the game.

Some little advice from someone who's been here long enough to know Disco, much like life, goes up on the wheel, and down on the wheel. Ride through the down, and enjoy the up.
God bless.

Well, maybe you met bad people, maybe not... But it's getting hard, a LOT of new people joined, and not all care about RP, not all care to read rules, not all care to check forums...

It can really make one angry sometimes... Just before week I have spent about a hour with a guy who just joined server, explaining all that came to my mind, and where he should and shoudn't go (As I met his Liberty LF in Minor), gave him a few bucks ... All looked nice, I got a good feeling.... and the next day, he was flying Nomad morph around Isis going all " Lol I'm Nomad " then " This server sucks bye" after someone shot him...
Experience like that makes people consider how helpfull they should be , eh.

And yeah, stopping some powertraders can be scary, they say funky things when you disturbt the plan to profit 100'000/1s.

Well like in life, you'll meet fine people, here, you also meet some people who will make your head hurt... and metagamers. I think they are special class of people.

Well... Wellcome to Disco, whatever is said, whatever is done, it's still the best community and mod.

Cheers,
Elvin.

EDIT: Hm, that is bit more confused than I wanted... but you will understand I hope, haha.

Ah , so you were Galacticus. We had a litle chat in Puerto Rico yesterday. It's a pity things have gone that way, but I'm afraid that when you pirate, you see the worst people around. Powertraders, silent or the "IM GONNA KILL U ON MY BHG BS" ones, police Rambomen who come in in force , battlecruisers and all to stop one measilly pirate, and just generally unlikeable pricks.

I hope you enjoy your time here a lil better from now on.

A newbies first week - Galacius - 07-06-2009

Thanks everyone the positive comments are much appreciated, I forgot to touch on something else that has been bugging me a bit.

So those people are called powertraders huh? Well they can be happy im done pirating unless its something big or someone is getting in my face. Im tired of weird rp "we are lane hackers disguised as img to farm money to buy a battleship" (when they had iff and tag and started going psychotic when they were killed, it got so bad I just left, unfortunetly my mentor didnt appreciate it so I think it escalted), the whole sanction threats deal yadda yadda I covered it in my last post.

Honestly the whole thing with taxing img was a huge rp buildup to facing mobius squadron. They ganked my transport hardcore when I was slave running and I never forgot how they did what most players could not (its been relatively easy to avoid or get away most of the time) and I was harrasing imgs supply lines to the point that I would have a showdown with them, sounds cool I think but im not doing that anymore since most would rather cry foul then call in a flying squadron of death to come "alleviate" me from them.

Secondly the hatred for anyone with a ship thats white on the chart really irks me. And after that the "cannot have gallia out of gallia" bugs me more though I feel that argument is a lost cause.

Overall its been positive but the negative experiences are really making it difficult since they are so poignant and the, well I cant figure a good word for it thats non dirty, got away with it. Its really frustrating and is making me really reconsider getting a cruiser (the only battleship I dream of is the royal gallian navy one) and rping it at a junker base, because I fear even with a good write up it would be in bastille or be a starflier in a heartbeat, and it makes me shy away from the rp I want. This plus the worry that im waisting my money on the more rp correct choices (pirate cruiser) instead of something that has better stats (hessian/scylla) eats the hardcore mmorpg up and makes him scream that its stupid off me.

All I have to say on that.

A newbies first week - Elvin - 07-06-2009

Well, just a note, you don't have to write a story to have a capital ship... BUT, it gives your RP some more depth, and you have some hardpoint to climb on...

And powertraders... We all love them. They are going trough routes that earn the most money (yet usually can be hardly called logical or RP) all the day long, usually trying to abuse either Zoner or Junker ID... and they do not care about RP... there is either weak one, or none. The other good thing is that when you stop them, you get a salve of offenses, then threats about " Lulz logging battleship to kill u noob " ... Ah.

Well, if you like RP, and have patience, I am sure you'll like it here sooner or later, haha.
