I was thinking.. And I had this discussion a long time ago between me and a few of my friends. We mess around and make little mods and stuff and play them with each other and we came up with an idea a long while back and I think maybe it would be a good idea here.

This is not doubling or tripling shields or what have you. This is for large ships like Destroyers and up. To have multiple shield generators that cover different areas of the ship. The .mat or what have you of the shield would cover only one area. So say a ventral shield would cover only the bottom half of the ship, same for the dorsal. Maybe fore and aft shields.

Just a thought. Maybe someone here would like it.

Interesting concept, it would make the capital ships a fraction harder to kill.

If they had a 'dorsal' (lower) sheild and seperate 'ventral' (upper) shield, you would have to make sure you were firing at the same sheild section in order to start doing hull damage.

In a way it would give capship a little more of an edge, but at the same time capships hull could be lowered a little, making them a little less beefy because their shields are harder to take down.

The issue is, you don't want one fighter, of any class, to be able to take out a capship on its own. In any great movie, star wars, star trek.. That sort of stuff. You never see the lonely fighter or shuttle take out an entire battleship on it's own. It's like shotting a 9mm handgun at your neighbors house. How soon do you think your neighbors house would fall down? How many clips would it take you? Exactly.

Luke Skywalker (X-Wing) vs Death Star.

However, on topic: Its an interesting concept, if doable, and it would give a reason for having the ability to barrel roll, put a new shield in the main line of fire whilst the downed one recharges.

This is true about luke skywalker, but even this defeats realism. He used ''the force'' and no one on here has that. The only ''force'' here is cheating and that is forbidden.

This is doable, but it creates balance issues in our current model. Its been applied in different mods.

That's why I am saying turn the hull rating down on the capships that would use this. So once you did actually did drop their shields you could take them down just a little easier.

This in itself adds the need for capship shield busters. It would give people something else to have on their capships for anti capship defenses.

*totally offtopic here!

Call me a nerd if you will, but the main reason Luke Skywalker managed to take down the Death Star is...stupid design.

I mean, the Death Star's *main reactor* had several exaust ports leading to it from the surface.... and they were dead straight.

A lucky shot with a proton torp and *boom* it's gone. Now if there had been a kink or bend in the exaust channel....

Back on topic;

Why reduce the hull on the BS, once the sheild is gone on one side they are just as killable by a bomber as usual.

I rather like this idea. I don't think it'd be necessary to make the Hull less for battleships... They're supposed to be relatively hard to kill anyway. Not too hard but hard enough.
Now what would be really cool is if you could "reroute" power to the rear shield or to the forward shield, rendering that one more powerful than the other.
For example:

BS has two shields, one in the font and one on the back. They both have the normal capacity of 500,000 (just a placeholder number I have no idea what the real number for a BS shield is). Said BS is engaging head on into a fight, he thus reroutes power from the rear to the forward shield, making the rear shield capacity 250,000 and the forward one 750,000. Or when said BS starts to run away from said fray, he reroutes all power to the rear shield, making it 1,000,000 while the forward one is off.

Sorta like "Reroute all power to the rear deflector shields" that we hear in the movies... I'm not sure what increments would be possible or how this would or could be implemented (my guess is a whole new sidebar for Battleships with sliders on it, or something).
