I was to send this in a pm to another player (lots of pm's these days), but I think I will put this in the open, as might serve to more people.

As you can see, nobody who creates house factions want to play as police, but as military. The reason for this is clear: most pirates are using gunboats, and as the police can only use light fighters (as we can see in npc behaviour) they dont stood a chance against gunboats. And police using very heavy fighters and bombers is out of place, you cant simply authorize the use of torpedos for police personel.

Because discovery is unbalanced, my proposal was for a new type of gunboat, a policial one without the forward gun, something along the lines of a coast guard ship (to use a real life example). Gunboats dont use torpedos, they use missiles, strong missiles but still missiles. I was to put that in the mod discussion, but I known that my opinions are flamed all the time, and anything that I propose is discarded without a second thought, so I put here for factions: authorize the use of gunboats for policial forces.

Also, any house military player faction can create a sub-faction using the police tag, and using light fighters and gunboats. In this way, they can let some ships in the house systems to guard it against pirates, and use their main ships, the military ones, in some military campaign.

Tja, true

Same goes for police guards. They are pretty much useless and I'd really prefer there to be either no police guard at all or being made as one with the military.

Police NPC's are flying light fighters, but.... Around the world (real life) in the major metro areas and some larger cities the police have special units "S.W.A.T" teams, with special training and heavy weopons. Who's to say someone cant role-play the Britonia Police and fly a Templer or Crusader, or maybe even a gunboat as a command and control ship, and RP themselves as the elite arm of the police force. Just using Britonia as an example. Just a matter of stretching the imagination alittle. Anything larger would probably be a real stretch. I dont think as a game you have to be so rigid and impose limitations to just one or two ships. If I were to RP a policeman and all I could fly was a LF, would tend to get boring after awhile.

Indeed, it would get boring.

I agree that police factions should be seen more often, but there still have to be rules made for them. If we give the police gunboats or destroyers, or even VHFs, they'll want to, say, (Using the Bretonians as example) go up to Tau and nail the Kusariites. And then the Kusari State Police'll come down with their gunboats, and we'll have a second never-ending war. And we'll still never run into cops, because they'll be in Tau, which is a war zone so nobody goes there (generalization). Before we give them bigger guns, we have to think long and hard about what they can and can't do, so nobody gets in trouble.

My thoughts...

Think police should be able to use up to gunboat class following the example of it being used as the operations control. Would say bombers would be out. Fighters think any of them.

Strikes a balance between what we see in freelancer and not being too limiting on a player faction.

My 2 cents.

I say that police should be able to use up to gunboats BUT all police members should not be allowed to scan or engage anyone outside of their house systems. How does that sound?

Police factions - Panzer - 05-21-2007

Sounds good to me.

I agree with Rogue63 about the SWAT, but I dont agree with the use of heavy fighters, because these can carry torpedos. You dont see the SWAT using torpedos in their cars, nor a coast guard in their boats. Missiles I think its fine, because light fighters can use them.

Any heavy fighter can carry torpedos. The vhf can mount novas torpedos. These can be used against large, military targets. Same for bombers. I known some light fighters can carry torpedos too, but these are not standard equipment.

Now gunboats have the forward gun that have practically the same use of a nova torpedo, hence my idea of a new type of gunboat for police without the forward gun, but I doubt this will be implemented.

We can have a agreement about the use of gunboats for police forces. In this way we will have light fighters and gunboats grouped with the sole intention of hunting pirates, leaving the militaries free to do their wars. The situation we have now is unrealistic. We have militaries acting as police, with most concern for pirates than for terrorists or military enemies.

I think that Police would use Gunboats, but only for patrols and special investigations INSIDE their own house space. I think police Factions are cool and you may see me flying around as LPI occasionaly.

Verginix Out

I like the police (LF, HF and GB) idea. That would give the military types more time for military operations & border guard duties instead of scanning traders all day in central systems.

I would like to add that I think the police should only use their nations ships. Unlike the military that would trade tech w/allied (or friendly) nations, they would not. The police in general are limited by their available tech & firepower, unlike the latest & greatest the military gets. I dont want to see a Brit Police wing of a Lib GB, Anubus & Ravens Talon. Uniformity would look cooler also. If the police need bigger guns they could always call for military backup.
