Is this allowable? I have a mercenary character and would like some way to distinguish myself as a merc besides people scanning my cargo to find my ID.

I've seen it done a few dozen times. It really doesnt hurt Roleplay, nor do i believe it is against naming rules, could be wrong though. Wife would tell you I usually am.

But how would we know the IFF of the Merc?

I'm thinking a GOOD merc has no IFF.
Its not required, and any IFF aside from freelancer would disallow him some docking/contracts.
It would take some work and plenty of bribes (and more /dropreps than Pennsylvania has lolwuts), but a damn near neutral Merc would be the best.
No ties, no restrictions on jobs.

EXACTLY some factions just take it too personally when you work against them. Although a merc may have a few personal agendas as far as the job goes we have no affiliation and should not be treated as constantly hostile. Pushing mercs away is like forcing them to come after you. You can never be protected and you can never make use of our skills and immunities. Granted some mercs can't be trusted by their nature but some mercs have a code of honor. Most mercs really want to be the independent merc that has a crew once in a while. Forbidding us from your systems is like pushing away someone you've never met before for all you know you might like them.

Some mercs are never your enemy if you got the creds. If someone comes to claim a bounty on you there's a chance you can turn them right back around on their employer, just be sure to post a bounty before they make the kill or you'll have one pissed Merc when he gets sanctioned.

you can put [\JG/] infront of your name if you care.

We are all independant mercs and our insignia is well recognized by a lot of factions in the system.

PEACE.
