Dawn of War - JonatanRaven - 05-27-2007

Well, I've started playing Dawn of War. Mostly because it's Warhammer 40k and me and my friends have become suckers for table top wargames lately. We haven't started playing 40k because it's so darned expensive and you need to buy a helluva lot of figures. And then there's the painting to do.

Anyways..

Started playing the single player campaign and I wasn't impressed (with the gameplay). It's more or less the same thing as any other rts I've played and the campaign was really predictable. The missions was kind of boring (at least the first eight, which is what I've played so far) and all of them (one exception) could be solved by building up your defence and then swarming the enemy.

I did a quick search on the forum to check who/if any of you played it and what the general thoughts was. I noticed some of you consider it one of the best games ever!?

I just don't know about it. I like it because of the 40k world and the 3d environment, but other than that, it's just mediocre. Seeing as some of you like it that much, what am I missing (except for the multiplayer function of course, see my sig for info on that)?

Brilliant tri-sig user bar. Thing. Whatever you want to call it. It is still pretty amazing.

Anywho, yeah, multiplayer was Chad's favorite part. Apparently Mark of Chaos sucks too. My lil' RTS nephew advises against it. ("Go play C&C, the Original! That one was bloody brilliant! C&C3 ruined the d*mn series with stupid *ss aliens!" he says).

I have only played one real time strategy, and that was Warcraft Two, Tides of Darkness. Coolest. Game. Ever. Yeah. Anyways, yes, Chad says that the expansions of WH40k made buying the original pointless, since you can play Winter Assault, or whatever it's called, without it.

Still, AMAZING user bar. A tri-thingy! Hurray!

Well, that's what I'm thinking too. The world and units of DoW are the only things that are original. Warcraft 2 was a great game, and as I'm a BIG fan of anything Orcish, I loved that game even more. Sure, the orcs in DoW are cool to, but still.

Thank you, I still don't know what the deal is with them userbars, but hey..

It isn't the fact that they are user bars. I don't care for user bars (Nightfall's brilliant signature avatar is the only thing I use, just because it is AWESOME!), but the fact that you have three that directly correlate to one another... just, the way you did it is pretty amazing. Yeah.

Anywho, orcs were amazing, but Death Knights? That was where it was at! They had the Temple of the Damned, which, let's be honest, looked awesome, and then you had goblin sappers...

And the graphics weren't good, but that was just a bonus. I hate these new-gen 3D things. The original Star Craft (which I've played, too. How the hell did I forget that???) had super-cool uber graphics that are, by today's standards, horrific, but I love 'em.

<--- Blizzard fanatic. I just never got into WoW.

Well, I got the idea when I was playing around in photoshop (again...). So I thought I'd give it a shot. The third one was just added as a clarification and wasn't supposed to be there at all.

Nah, Orcs (or pretty much any goblinoids) are my favourites. I even have an Orc blood bowl team that I bought a couple of years ago.

Hmmmmm, People are folish around here in the ways of Dawn of War.

First off, which one do you have? Dawn of War, the original or do you have some expansion packs.

I would like to know which other games you can compare it too because most people think it is very unique. I personaly would say, if you want to take full advantage of the game, and not be resorted to 'Turtling' set the difficulty level up to medium.

Also, the 2nd exp[ansion pack adds alot to the game. you have 7 factions in total, each of them quite unique and a mpa based campaign, where you can strategically move your armies around and such. I suggest check it out.

I've got the original game and I'm currently playing it on the default difficulty (I think it's normal difficulty). But the sp-campaign is rather predictable.

Well, I've played a lot of rts games. The "conquest/resource management"-type games I've played are in chronological order:

  1. Dune II: Battle for Arrakis
  2. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans
  3. Warcraft: Tides of Darkness
  4. M.A.X.:Mechanized Assault & Exploration
  5. Command & Conquer
  6. Command & Conquer: Red Alert
  7. Star Craft
  8. Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds
  9. Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns
The thing is, they're pretty much all the same. I like them (Dune, Warcraft and Star Wars being the favourites) but there's nothing really revolutionary about any of the new games. If you've played one, you've played them all so to speak.

I can't say I know what "turtling" means, but by the sound of it I'd say it's something like what I described, building up your army until it's invincible and then overrunning the enemy?

I really fail to see the uniqueness of DoW. Although I have to say that I do LIKE the game, I'm just not impressed.

What would make dawn of war a Unique game is that instead of having harvester type uints, you have to capture teh straegical points to gain reasources. Not to mention its armies are all very different.

OK I didn't read the whole thread but I do want to tell you what I think of the 40k series of RTS titles.

The beauty of DoW and it's expansions is not the game play, it's not the setting, and it's not the story! No! It's the units. I know right now maybe your playing single player and it don't really seem all that. But if you also get dark crusade and start to play online you'll see the beauty of this game.

For one thing, you have 7 sides!!!! when is the last time you played an RTS with 7 sides to play? and they are ALL balanced and all are different... NOT one unit from any of the armies are the same. Each army has it's own tech tree, not only that, each side goes up the tech tree in a different way, for example the Space Orcs have to build up their "WAHHHHHH" to be able to upgrade, so we are talking numbers, the bigger the army, the more advanced it is ect. With Dark Crusade you can also play it in single player mode in a mini Total War type interface, you have about 15 or 16 areas to fight for, and all 7 races are fighting it out on this one planet, think Risk! anyway, each side in that expansion gets their own story to boot! Which are that not bad by most people's standards (ok they were not the strongest element to the game). But again the balance of so many sides, the mix of units and the way they do infact match the table top models (plus you get a very nice advanced painting interface, so your pc army looks like your table top army (if you have one)) all makes this a great game.

Lets not forget that in DoW resources are done a little differently than everywhere else, the way resource points work and stuff:)and no don't point to CoH as relic made that AFTER DoW:P

So ok the single player is somewhat of a let down, but I also think it's a nice intro to the 40k universe for those that don't know about it! Also while the story might be a little weak, you have to like the voice acting? I think every voice fits the race so very well. And the Space Marines in the single player storyline are exceptional.

I do however recommend getting DoW as well as both expansion packs to fully enjoy the 40k RTS series as that's when it becomes a complete package!

[Side note I did infact review this game for GamerGod.com when I used to work there, but since the site went down, I lost much of my work :/ was gona link to it]

Ohh and I've been playing RTS games for some 13 odd years now maybe a bit more, and I got to say, I'm surprised you have not played a few more "different" "not main stream" RTS games... did you try Homeworld? or Homeworld 2?, have you tried Ground Control? have you tried TA? what about SC?

See the thing is, they won't fix it till it's broke... if you look at ANY genre of games, it's the same thing. Like where have sports sim come in the last 10 years? fifa200X doesn't do that much more than fifa96 on the megadrive, except look a bit better and feel more smooth. Under the bonet they are pretty much the same gameplay. What changed from Half-life 1 to Half-life 2? graphics yes, AI somewhat, gameplay? no story? no enjoyment? actually no! they were both just as enjoyable as each other!.

What I'm getting at is, we as a gaming community, and in some respects us reviewers, need to start looking at the games market and see that... things are topping off... we are not gona get the influx of great new ideas that we saw in the early to mid 90's, we are not gona see the risks taken with PC games that have happened before, mostly because every PC publisher and their grandma wants to push out a MMO these days. The way I see, we have to look at the gameplay much more than we have done in the recent past. And online gameplay will be the key!

OK OK I'm done, enough for now:)
