Heres a question thats been asked a million times... - Nicks - 11-28-2009

I used to be a regular discovery player, but when i got my new PC, i stopped playing Freelancer in favour of newer games like TeamFortress 2 etc. But i couldnt keep myself away from Disco for long!

Ive installed Freelancer, patched it, installed FLMM 1.3, extracted and activated Disco.

But when i go to join anysevers, it displays some jargon about "Being unable to connect because the server has just shut down or i have connection problams etc..." which ive never had before.

- I'm using windows vista 64 (the only thing thats changed)

- My internet is fine, its the same internet setup i used to use.

- Ive tried disabling my firewall.

- Ive tried restarting both my router and my PC.

- Ive tried using direct connect and altering the shortcut to connect to servers.

- Ive installed and re-installed FL several times in different places (My Documents, Program Files etc)

- Ive given freelancer full permissions on my PC.

But nothing i do seems to work! Is there some patch ive missed or some trick i havent learnt?

Any help offered will be greatly apprichieated.

Thanks

I'm about 75% sure that it will be anti-virus software firewall related.

Disabling your firewall isn't going to work unfortunatately, you have to uninstall it completely - just the firewall part not the whole anti-virus package.

Hmmm.... It would appear that my Antivirus is on the so called "Black list" for Freelancer....

How would you recomend getting round this?

I know there is the option of un-installing my Anti Virus, but its part of my internet package, so i dont know how that would effect it.

If i have to uninstall it, what would you recomend as a replacement?

Or should i just use the default windows one?

Thanks

Please, read Cannon's reply above. You don't need to uninstall the whole anti-virus, just the firewall part.

Cant. My Anti-virus isnt an official one, its a strange version of Mcafee called "BT Net protect plus".

Its either all there, or all gone.

Why don't you use a firewall / antivirus software that doesn't pose such limitations. I use Avast! and it works out fine for me.

I'm thinking of switching to avast or avg actually. Whats it like?

Also, i just uninstalled Mcafee and i still cant connect (Using windows defender in the mean time)

I would suggest you this combination

-1) AVG Antivirus
-2) Zonealarm Firewall

They are both free and with this combination Freelancer should work.

With Windows Vista you need to disable UAC ..( user account control) How to do it

Now with that setting activated you need to do a fresh install of FL
Install the game ..restart
Install FLMM..restart
Activate Mod.. restart

Then all will be fine.

I dont see how UAC can have an effect on Freelancer, i right click and run as admin every time any way...

Ive tried avast, and i dont really like it. Plus, it has no firewall, so it makes no difference.

I guess i'll try the UAC thing, thanks.
