I've just downloaded the Vista version of RPG Maker, and am thinking of making a Freelancer de-make. This will involve:
  • Sprite making
  • 8-Bit soundtrack
  • Hoodlum knows what else.
I am not sure how to get the thing to switch between humans and ships, so that may take some work.
EDIT: Possible soundtrack?

In RPG Maker? Good luck with that. That software makes Final Fantasy clones and nothing else. It doesn't even have a scripting language.

http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/ <<< Free trial. Full thing's 20 bucks, gets rid of ads and ****.

Not true - the XP and the VX support Ruby and it's capabilities *do* rival GameMaker's. Having done a lot of scripting with the RM2000/2003 too back in the days, I'd also like to dispute your claim that you can only make FF clones: I've done quite a lot from a simple Zelda-like ABS over a spaceship pewpew game to a limited AI capable of reacting to friends, enemies and game world objects.

Sure, it's very limited, that's true, but the RPG Maker is more powerful than one might think. I found it pretty fun to circumvent it's limitation before I moved away from it:).

That being said, if you (jamie) are new to "working" with Game Creation Kits, don't overestimate yourself and try to make something that requires a lot of practice right at the beginning. Also, Game Maker might be a better choice for you if you want to make an action game, too, unless you want to learn Ruby.

Noted. Now, how to script Ruby?

It's an entirely different language.
Good luck learning it.

I would insert a joke from some tutorials I took when I used to know it, but I forgot it.
Like a lot of useful computer-related skills.

I worked with RPG maker 2000 for a while. it's hilarious. simple to use and the results are often way better than you could ever imagine.

so far I managed to make:

- Duck Hunt
- Battlezone
- Karaoke bar
- Dance Dance Revolution
- and of course some very, very weird rpg scetches (mostly spoofs for teh lulz)
