Discovery RP server upgrades - majkp - 07-10-2007 <splitted from the Discovery RP server information thread> I installed the new motherboard (ASUS P5B DELUXE - P965/ICH8R), which allowed us overclock the server much more. The current OC values are: CPU 2.87GHz, FSB 1640MHz (4x410MHz), Memory 810MHz. We still have some space left for overclocking, with proper cooling, this processor can run stable up to 3.5GHz. Current player limit is 75 and if everything runs OK, we will raise it. The new motherboard cost approx. 180$. I'll try to sell the old one and post the difference soon. If there is anything left in donations in the future, I would buy some better cooler for our OC'd processor and then maybe UPS. First I though we could use the current ones in our network, but they are a bit overloaded so I couldn't use them. So this is the next investment plan. Discovery RP server upgrades - Korrd - 07-10-2007 UPS just for playing is overkill IMO. Instead, better cooling would be more palpable 'cause it will allow us to OC more and raise the player limit on the server even more. Discovery RP server upgrades - onca - 07-10-2007 I agree with Korrd. If the power goes out at your place, then I'm sure we can find something else to occupy us for the duration. I'd rather less lagging and a smokin' box (heh heh). OTOH graceful shutdown of the server might be a good idea during a blackout, maybe thats how database corruptions happen. Now where's me wallet..... o. Discovery RP server upgrades - majkp - 07-11-2007 I agree, first better cooling, then UPS... I don't think it's a total overkill. It would help me sleep better... Discovery RP server upgrades - voyager - 07-11-2007 What would be the cost of a cooling solutiom? Discovery RP server upgrades - majkp - 07-11-2007 I assume 25-75$. There are a lot of coolers, and I am not an expert, any suggestions? What about this one? ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro http://www.arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=79 ...costs like 30$ here. Discovery RP server upgrades - Fellow Hoodlum - 07-11-2007 This is the one I fitted to my own PC, has dropped the CPU temperature by an average of 10 degrees centigrade. Very similar style and highly recommended ... Zalman Company Hoodlum Discovery RP server upgrades - majkp - 07-11-2007 The Zalman CNPS9700 LED looks cool, and costs 75$ here. According to the test of coolers I found, it's one of the best: http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=8757&page=115 Discovery RP server upgrades - Fellow Hoodlum - 07-11-2007 The Zalman will cost a little more I expect, as its noise reduction is huge, and its overall efficiency is better. Due to the fact your ambient room temperature is down on mine, and noise is not such a great factor, the Arctic 7 looks good if its cost is considerably less. I'll keep looking ... Right, ran most of the top half of the tested units for price, value and efficiency comparisons, using GB Sterling as a base, The Thermaltake Big Typhoon is actually the best allround. Bit pricier of course. Best value would be the Scythe Infinity in this country. Hoodlum Discovery RP server upgrades - Korrd - 07-11-2007 ' Wrote:I agree, first better cooling, then UPS...I have a 1000VA UPS at home, which I repaired and saved from being dumped (It had dead batteries and 4 blown off MOSFET. A $60 fix, for a $200 UPS:D). Believe me when I tell you it does not lasts for long. It holds ~30 mins if my computer is Idling. And that is if the monitor is turned off. While on full load, it lasts only 15- mins. It uses two 12v 9Ah batteries. Now, considering that disco server is under full load almost 24/7, we would need a really powerful UPS in order to keep the server running for a considerable amount of time. The UPS would be more expensive than the whole server. That's why I say its overkill. Don't freak out because of the server. If it has to fail, it will no matter what we do. It's murphy's law. And go sleep well. Don't let it f**k up your real life. As the server is on a basement, noise isn't a concern. In fact, we could just put a 220V fan tunneled to the heatsink... Crude, but really cheap. No, i'm not talking about a room fan, but from a heavy duty fan used to cool down machinery. I think its 150-200mm in diameter, and moves a lot of air. It can fit inside the rack, and take air from the outside. |
