I've kinda lost the ability to play Freelancer. How long does it take before an inactive character gets deleted?

Well, when was the last time you logged in?
You have 60 days from that time until things start to disappear. (If it was a new character with less than 10 minutes on it, then it goes away in 7 days.)
I would suggest contacting someone that is friendly to you - if you have anyone like that - and sending them your back-up ADF files with all of your accounts on them so they can keep them active.
