Liners. - Varvarg - 09-08-2007 Okey, i bought a luxury liner with the intention of using it as an sort of heavily armed transport. To support RP the idea was that the liner got hijacked by me and my band of bearded, drunk and smelly pirates. Well now we use it to smuggle stuff and transport Very Important Pirates to smelly resorts. I know some people don't think this is good RP but i don't give a rats ass :P However, i've read somewhere that liners could be described as cruisers, and if i ain't wrong there are limitations for them? If that is indeed true i will change my ship pronto Liners. - Fellow Hoodlum - 09-08-2007 Liners can be armed as and shielded as gunboats, not cruisers. That then makes them a capital ship, not a transport, and therefore a target for all types of attack from any type of ship. And not giving a 'rats ass' is possibly not the best way to get sensible or helpful answers in future mate. Hoodlum Liners. - BestFlyerHere - 09-08-2007 *bangs head on table* Not again... Liners. - Panzer - 09-08-2007 Luxury cruisers... Normally such vessels (WW2, u-boat warfare) relied on speed to evade attacks. Armament was symbolic... Not sure... but maybe a little equipment nerf, compensated by a cargo hold upgrade would be justified. Liners. - Drake - 09-09-2007 The Lux Liner is more of a cruise ship... It's huge. Not fast, not maneuverable, just huge. I've heard that mounting gunboat weapons and shields on a transport makes that ship a gunboat, and can be pirated with capships... But what about freighters that can mount transport shields? Does that make them transports, and therefor illegal to pilot by people who are only allowed freighters? Also, there are a number of transport ships that can mount gunboat shields, but not gunboat weapons (the Kusari "Beetle" along with a few others). Also, did anyone else know that the Behemoth can mount two gunboat forward guns? They can only fire one of them... And only once, but still... And it can't even mount gunboat shields or turrets. Also, I once asked but never got an official answer... If mounting gunboat level equipment on a transport makes it into a gunboat... Does that mean Traders can't fly it? We finally got an OFFICIAL answer from Igiss about how to classify a ship as a transport and not a freighter (anything with 500+ cargo), though I don't know if this has actually been put in the rules thread (I doubt it...). Maybe we could get an official answer to some of these questions, because honestly I don't trust anything told to me by anyone short of an admin, unless it's actually listed in the rules. Sorry to say it, but that includes Hoodlum. Liners. - Fellow Hoodlum - 09-09-2007 Yeah sorry Drake, all I do is try to put the 'sense' into 'common' ... The Liner situation is common sense, it has gunboat weapon mounts, so if used, it becomes a gunboat. You do not have to use them. Your choice to use it as either a transport or as a gunboat. The other things you have brought up are bugs, and therefore instead of exploiting them, how about posting them in the bugs and features thread. This is how the mod evolves properly with honest people actually making it balanced along the way, instead of sneakily using the features that slip through the net. Can't catch every little bug or anomaly that slips through without help. As to the rules, well they do need a sort out very soon, as there are people now consistently looking for just the loopholes, and its a damn shame. Whatever happened to the gentlemen's rules by which this server, forum and mod used to run perfectly well with before ? Hoodlum Liners. - Drake - 09-09-2007 Um, bugs? I wasn't aware of that. I see a freighter with a level 7 shield slot, I figure it's supposed to be that way. I see a transport with a level 8 shield slot, I figure it was supposed to be that way. And yeah, I know you're trying to help with common sense stuff... But sometimes you just need a rule, and some things aren't covered by common sense alone (like what separates a freighter from a transport... sometimes obvious, sometimes not, I'm glad Igiss cleared that up). The way I see the Liners is, if a Trader (Trader ID) wants to give up half his cargo hold for greater protection, let him. He's going to be d**n hard to pirate without a bomber or gunboat (though many transports already are), but he's paying for it by making half as much from trading as someone in a Ltrain or Ctran. I also agree that if you fly a Liner, you should be able to get pirated by bigger ships. Liners. - Fellow Hoodlum - 09-09-2007 If something looks a little odd, or out of place on a ship mainly, its possibly a 'bug', or something that has slipped through the net when they were introduced. It would be good if you think its out of place to post it anyway, and it can be looked at. Igiss most definately reads all of the bugs, suggestions, and features threads and takes all of them on board. Anything out of place can then be dealt with. Hope this makes a little sense in the balance side of things, it should stop anything 'uber' or exploitable being used quietly till it gets found out. I'm guessing that definitively lumped the Beetle into the "transport" category? (And the Heavy Lifter too, i guess). Maybe they already were and I just never read the right conversations. If that's the law then I have a well used ship, driven with love, that I have to put on the used market. It could make sense that the liner is considered a gunboat, becuase of the loadout. However, think about it; there is a reason that it's called a luxury liner and not a Heavy Assault Liner :) We sure need clarification about this, and the best way would be in-game. Until then, i guess how you use it yourself (as a transport or gunboat) dictates its restrictions in RP. |
