Which 3d editor? - peter123 - 04-10-2010

Last time i thought about freelancer moding. I want start making ships and stations models but i dont know which 3d editor is best for it. I want something noobie friendly (i have no expirince in it)and free. I ve tried with Blender which is named the best free 3d editor but i cant do anything in it. Its too complicated.

Google SketchUp is by far the most simplest 3D modeling program, but it lacks some advanced stuff ( which can be very useful). Right now I'm using Metaseqouia but it's still
complicated as every other "serious" 3d editor.

Overall, use SketchUP 'till you learn more advanced editors.

EDIT: As for others I don't know, still a newbie like you.

I tried that two programs. matasqouia is not bad but i dont get how to turn view and newest version of it dont support English. Sketch up is nice too but i think it will stuck with more advanced stuff. Which editor is commonly used by FL devs and other modders?

EDIT: I have try open ships form FL by maetasqoia and sketch up but it didnt work.It seems to that editors dont support models used in FL. Thanks for attention Zylorex but that dont work.

Metaseq is used often
3dsMax is used often, and for texturing.
Wings3d is what I use, an extremely simple but useful program. Will do all that you want it to do.

To open FL models (CMP files):
Get Milkshape.
Get the CMP importer (and exporter if you are going to make ships)
Import the FL CMP model into Milkshape (Under import, freelancer cmp)
Export the model as a .3ds file.
Import that .3ds file into any modelling program.

Milkshape is currently the only program that has an importer/exporter for FL cmp files.
There is another exporter for 3dsmax but it's not entirely finished as far as I know.

I was recommended not to use Milkshape 3D for modeling but for texturing.
But as you can see here, Milkshape is mentioned alot. So I guess they're using milkshape to model.

Although, I'd like some modeling experts (like Jinx) to give us some advice on modeling programs.

EDIT: Ninja'd

Sketchup for modeling, 3ds max for texturing, milkshape for importing/exporting.

Granted, I only use Sketchup for modeling because it's simple to work with and you don't actually need anything more advanced for freelancer models.

Use Milksh*t for texturing and me and frozen will come to your house ourselves and gut you D:

Seriously. Don't. 3ds max is infinitely better for it.

Another good program for 3D modelling is Blender. It supports a load of different tools for advanced modelling.

3DS Max 7 is probably your best bet. Stable, and though it looks complicated you only need to know how to use a tiny, tiny portion of the available features, most of which are located conveniently in the right-hand control bar.

I know its the best 3d modeler. But its price:3495 USD confuses me a much. I dont want spend that all money if i even dont know i can do something better than some fancy spheres in it. Or you mean torenting?<dramatic look>

I checked it out. As i said too complicated. I cant do anything in the waves of tiny buttons . maybe a nice tutorail will help me with it but i havent found anything simple and practical.

I checked it out long time ago but i forget about it. I think its the best for me. Very simple but enough for doing ships.

I was just checking out Milk shape then i read your post. I suddenly turned it off.

Seriously its not bad not too advanced and the most important it have freelancer importer exporter.

Ok now question number 2. How to test my models in the game?
