Another trick could be the one to record in another hard disk, not in the same where FL is running.

I can also suggest, as another program to compress the recorded .avi,

SUPER!

Great tutorial.

Another trick is to record in 800x600 and up-res to 1290x720 for YouTube later. DivX is great for re-sizing and quality control with a small file size.

Better resolution for youtube would be 1280 x 720. Not 1290.
Plus, Sony Vegas is great for resising, adding simple effects, like glow, some text, transform, etc. For starters.

YouTube does not recognize that resolution as "HD" it will be "HQ" but anything from 1290x720 upward is "HD". Took me weeks to figure it out because it wasn't listed in the requirements for "HD"

The 4.85 pre-release trailer was done in 1290 x 720. It looks fine.

My first upload test, was recorded in 1024x768x32, 25 FPS, settings full(except background dust I think), compressed with latest XVID-codec via VirtualDub 1.9.9 quality setting 2.0; the file I uploaded was a little over 20 MB. I didn't scale it up yet it is marked as HD by YouTube.

To make this post a little more on-topic, a short instruction on how to use VirtualDub for this purpose.
Download .zip file, extract somewhere, install codec of your choice if you don't want to use the included ones, open video, under Video/Compression in the menu bar choose your favoured codec, adjust quality settings etc., then save it via File/Save as AVI.
//edit: You can add sound from an external file with Audio/Audio from other file.

Strange. They must have changed it. The black bars on the side are something that is avoided when uploading in 1290x720. You can always go the full 1920x1080 for Full HD.

Oh and a hint. If you use After Effects, you can use bloom effects to fake better graphics. Works like a charm!:)
