Pirating in a Freighter - alance - 09-15-2007

Okay so I've been thinking about the Bank Card piracy going on, i.e. the "wire me 2mil or die" junk and it has given rise to a couple of questions in my head.

1) Why are pirates limited to Freighters and not allowed Tranports? They're allowed to demand cargo, why not encourage it by letting them use bigger merchant ships? Their gunboats have more cargo space than the vast majoirty of the Freighters out there, this is a problem. I'd dearly love to see a pirate in a Collector and his buddy in an Armored Transport strong-arming traders for a cut of their loot, then high-tailing it to a port with their booty.

2) Why don't freighters have, on average, larger cargo holds? The difference between freighters and Transports is incredibly high. I understand the feeling that new players should "work their way up" through the ships so keep the starter ships small. But Freighters should scale up better so that factions limited to freighters actually have some useful ships from which to choose.

Freighter holds currently range from 135 to 400 units, with an average of 260 units.
Transport holds range from 540 (Arm Tpt getting a boost) to 4500 units, with an average of 2300 units.

What I'd like to see is a change to the following:
Freighter holds range from 200 to 750 with an average up around 550 units; i.e. more ships on the top end.
Transport cargo holds should stay pretty much as they are but make -sure- that you're trading combat ability and efficiency in large amounts for those massive cargo holds.

The Freighter class should, in my opinion, be attractive to the privateer and to the trader who wants a nimble ship with a useful cargo hold. It should be the ship that trades in hostile space and has a chance to get out alive and earn those big profits. It should be the contraband hauler and the pirate sloop of choice for raiding shipping.

Transports on the other hand should be built for hauling capacity, and a few for strong defense but little offense. This ship should be unmatched in trading via the main routes, but should be risky to take off the beaten path without an escort.

Okay wow that got longer than intended, I'll stop now:)

Actually the rule is anything higher than 1000 units is classified a transport... So, the AT is actually considered a freighter and not a transport despite the word "transport" being in its name. K, all correct me if Im wrong.

its a great plan...
the extortion rackets really upset me....they just don't make sense for a lot of the pirate factions....
only ones where it really makes sense is hogosha...maybe liberty rogues....
and...as I've said many times, it makes killing traders more worthwhile to pirates....
which means less finagling over money....you don't pay/divulge cargo, you die, they get all you're cargo...

then again....why wouldn't they just kill traders all the time?

i've been saying for a long time, bring a bomber and a transport. thats all you need.

Look ive wrote this somewhere else guys and i write it agane, this "game" and it is a game not real life, is called freelancer, in freelancer pirates pirate for money, yes it is an extortion racket, we have it in this day and age so i don't see why we wouldn't in freelancer time line.

Ever since ive played freelancer 4+ years on pretty much every main server/mod out there there was pirates pirated for credits, this is the first time ive seen a couple of people moan about it saying "we should pirate for Cargo", if we wanted your cargo we may as well be a trader, really whats the point? pick up the cargo then have to go to where it sells for the highest prise?, im telling you pirating is hard enough as it is leave it be please.

And don't try and tell me wire taps so money can be passed from ship to ship to different accounts wouldn't be possible in the freelancer timeline because thats exactly what it is there for the ship to ship transfer is that wiretap.

To me you sound like disgruntled traders that don't like giving the odd million to the odd pirate out of the massive amounts of cash you make each day.

Well you've got me wrong 100%. I trade in a 2500 cargo hold ship and a 365 cargo hold ship (ARRR PEE) and I'd like to pirate in something other than a Gunboat. I'm looking for options, not restrictions. Did I -anywhere- say you should be disallowed asking for cash? If you want to be the standard "tax" pirate, fine, but I would prefer there be options that lead to more interesting piracy, for both the trader and the pirate.

And to AC Merc:
I thought the Transport cutoff was 1000 too until I read this post from Igiss on Sept 4:
Quote:Also, transports are all trading vessels with cargo capacity above 500. Freighters are trading vessels with cargo capacity below 500. I'll be changing Armored Transport cargo capacity to reflect this change (from 480 to, say, 540).
Anyway there are very few ships, transport or freighter, with cargo holds of 500-1000 units.

i want pirating to be more profitable so more ppl will pirate me. its boring trading.

if you could take cargo....you could make tonnes of money.
think about it.
on the corfu route....
traders make 10 mill a run....
if you took 1/5 of a trader's cargo, each run, and there are 3 traders you are pirating.....you could make about 9 million credits from each cycle.

so.
you can make tones more money by taking cargo.
than by charging rates.
think about it.
cargo usually sells for about 1.5-2x as much as it cost to buy.
if you don't have to pay for it....you can make tones of money.

this would make it easier for you to make money.
I know, because I spent a month doing this to npc's...and could make about a million an hour....in a camara.

and, [color=#FF0000]OF COURSE WE DON'T LIKE GIVING PIRATES MONEY. have you ever thought about that? yes..of course. traders love supporting parasites. thats why we trade....so we can lose a percentage to some random person with a M26 and a cd....
yeah.
and you are a disgruntled pirate who expects traders to behave?
does that make any sort of sense?

Pirating in a Freighter - Igiss - 09-15-2007

Just imagine a real world pirate of the past. The main target was not the cargo, but gold and silver (=money) from other ships. Cargo has a value too, of couse, but what can be better than actual money or something that can be easily converted into money? I see nothing illogical that pirates demand money, not the cargo.

Are you crazy? its hard enough catching one trader out of how many runs, do you really think i or any pirate could just sit there and take 1.5 out of every traders cargo on every run, thats just funny.

Never said you should love giving us money or behave... infact i prefer YOU do run as the chase is the part i like so much, i dont even pirate for money i pirate to try and add something to the server so don't give me that BS, and by us i mean most of my chars are unlawful, not all pirates and i have 2 trader ships so i can see the other side, and i love being pirated, i trade the most pirated route for just that, i can see both sides of the coin but it seems you need to try and do the same.
