Aperture Science Enrichment Center - Eden Institute - 06-06-2010

Welcome to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. Here you will find useful information such as application forms and important memos. This is also where you may submit information and results gathered from expeditions.

Bulletins:
From the CEO of Aperture Science

Aperture Science is built on three pillars. Pillar one: Science without results is just witchcraft. Pillar two: Get results or you're fired. Pillar three: if you suspect a coworker of bein' a witch, report them immediately. I cannot stress that enough. Witchcraft will not be tolerated.

A lot of you have been raising concerns about the so-called "dangers" of what we're all doing here.

Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: Why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: Why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired.

Plus, in the event of your death, I personally guarantee that, thanks to the form you were required to sign this morning, your family will not suffer the indignities of a prolonged and costly legal battle against Aperture Science. Trust me, I am rich, and it is a burden I do not wish on anyone.

Project Listing
Note: These are only open to Aperture employees, and are otherwise encrypted.
Project one: Anthropomorphs
Sirius, and in particular Liberty has seen an increasing number of entities that exhibit animal-like traits, though they are clearly sentient. The politically correct term seems to be "Anthropomorphs", though most just call them "Furries". In the interest of upholding our corporate image please refrain from using the latter term, as it is derogatory and also offensive to some of our employees who are fur-... Anthropomorphs themselves.

The objective here is to find these creatures, study their behavior and compile data on their actions. We want pictures, message logs and whatever else you can come up with(within the law, of course. Don't harm anyone). Use your imagination.

Pay: $500,000

<strike>Project Two: Ageria
Find any dirt you can on our competitors. Simple. Look for any Ageria ID'ed ship breaking the trade embargo, smuggling, eating babies, whatever. Pictures wanted.

Pay: $500,000
Bonuses: 50% if its Ageria| tagged

PROJECT COMPLETED

Project Three: Human Enrichment
see: http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=70925
This project involves our brave volunteers and those assisting them. Volunteers please keep a log of your experiences and include it in a report in this channel. Each entry should be no more than a paragraph and should be based on your experiences out in the world and in our testing facilities. Include pictures, logs, the usual.

Pay: Improved quality of life, full pardon, a ship, and a home.

<strike>Project Four: Zero-point anomalies

This is perhaps our most dangerous endeavor. We see the universe in three dimensions. It has long been theorized that there are many more than that which we perceive. You know what we think about theories that have no results. It has been established as fact, that there are at least four dimensions. In layman's terms, Height, width, depth, and time. These dimensions form a fabric which makes up the universe, we call it space-time. In order to instantaneously travel between any two points on this fabric, we must leave that fabric entirely, and then re-enter it at the desired location.

To summarize, What better way to design a gateway beyond reality, than to study one that already exists in nature? We believe that one such anomaly exists somewhere in the badlands. From what we can tell it is a one way gate that leads INTO our universe from beyond. There may be more of these around, we want you to find them and study them.

Find out: Its location, mass and other properties, and if anything is coming through.
Note: If you encounter any Ageria| tagged vessels while you are studying these anomalies... Make sure they don't see anything important.
Pay: $500,000 per report
Bonuses: $1,000,000 for locating an anomaly

Log Entry 003

Malloon groggily sat up.. His head was torturing him fiercely. Now that he thought about it, so did his arms and legs. And his middle abdominal area.

"Mister Breensly. Please take a moment to wake up fully. When you feel ready, there's a glass of cold water on the table next to you."

Malloon blearily opened his eyes to find the source of the voice. The light hurt more than any hangover he'd ever felt. Everything was fuzzy. He rubbed his eyes to clear the gunk, and tried again. A nurse was sitting nearby with a small notepad. "Aye, thankee.. Jus' gimme a secoond or two, heh? Ugh.." He groaned and swung his feet off the side of the bed. He saw that he was wearing a tight white T-shirt and white boxers. "Right.. So, I remember an experiment. I was spliced with the Bladefish." He licked his teeth, and there were four noteable fangs where his canines used to be. They revolted him. He was having serious second thoughts. Too late for them, now, though. He began exploring for other changes.

"Mister Breensly, there will be time for that in a moment. Please drink water, you need natural fluids in your body." When he looked up at her, she could see the sharper features of his face, his milky-orange eyes, and his lack of hair.

Malloon found the water glass and slowly drank it down, the icy goodness refreshing him fully. He could feel a strange strength in his hand, and he tested it- breaking the glass. The nurse jumped, and so did he. But when he examined his hand, there was only the thick callus that was the Bladefish's signature feature. He rubbed it up and down his jaw, and sure enough, he felt the spines that were waiting in there, though still soft and short. Maybe soon he would sprout them all across his body and gain the ability to swim like the Bladefish.

I was placed on a bed inside a glass dome, a cool mist started filling the space from directly above my head. I fell asleep, I don't know how long I was out. I feel dizzy...

"She's awake. Miss gates, you can get up now... How do you feel?"
"ih fheiw funn" she stutters and slowly moves her tongue around in her mouth
"My mouth feels like cotton. I need water." The nurse checks her tongue, which looks quite normal so far, then goes and gets her a glass of water.

Amanda picks up a clipboard off of a nearby table and starts writing notes.

I feel very strange, but it isn't all that bad. Water doesn't seem to make my mouth feel any better. My room is all glass, I can sort of see the doctor and someone else in the observation room. Not much privacy, but Its nice to know I'm being looked after.

Amanda screams and drops the clipboard

"Whats wrong?"
she points at an empty corner of the room with a look of terror on her face, and kicks the air as if something is going for her feet.
"There! who is that!?"
"I don't see anything miss... Hallucinations might be a side effect of the first stage. Your sample is known to be a powerful hallucinogen. Maybe you should lie down, don't worry... you're safe here."

Amanda lies down, obviously distressed and puts a pillow over her head.

I could see it, but it was so strange... couldn't be real, the nurse was right... I'm hallucinating. But WHY wont it stop!? I keep seeing a little man with a spear, running at me... He won't stop yelling!
"THIS IS SPARTAAA!!!"
Not real. Not real. Not real.

Amanda holds the pillow tightly over her face

"Nurse... Would you turn the light off please?"
"Of course." *click*
"Aha! Then we shall fight in the shade!"

"Ah, Mr. Kristall. Welcome back to the waking world. How do you feel?"

"Uh..." Peter opens his eyes and sits up carefully, holding his head. "Dizzy... and thirsty. How long was I out...?"

"Not long. Here, drink this, then try stretching your legs. We'd appreciate it if you record your experience on this clipboard."

Peter slid off the bed. His legs felt... wrong, somehow, though when he tried to think about it they seemed the same as they always had. And the room he was in... he had never had problems with claustrophobia, and the glass walls should have damped down any such feeling... but he still felt trapped. How was he supposed to run like this?
He tried to jot down his feelings on the clipboard, fighting off several yawns as he did so. A few minutes later, the clipboard slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor. He had fallen asleep, leaning against the wall.

Bret watches through the one way glass inside the observation window.....Looking at the individual patients as they wake up from their slumber*
Bret:....Strange......I have no memory of such a procedure for myself....I do guess that their reactions would be normal.....
*Bret rubs the connection on his arm that separates the machine and his flesh......Then looks back up through the glass*

Last night was... Long. It was hard to sleep, too much to think about I guess. As soon as the lights came on this morning though I had a strange, but very good feeling. They say my body has started producing chlorophyll, which may make me photosensitive. The hallucinations have nearly stopped completely. Today I go in for surgery, stage two of the process. When its done my new body will be finished, and all that will be left is to adapt to it. I won't look anywhere near the same.

"Come along miss gates, its time for your surgery."
A nurse and a man in a lab coat were at the door of her room. Amanda put the clipboard back on the table and went with them.
"Whenever I thought about going in for any kind of surgery, I never imagined I'd be walking in..."
They enter a well lit operating room, in the middle is a vat of transparent gel with all kinds of computers and machinery hooked into it. This would normally have been intimidating, but Amanda knew what all of it was for better than anyone else...
Without needing to be asked she slowly steps into the vat, straps on a breathing apparatus and lies down. Everything slowly fades to blackness.

Surgeon's notes:
All body hair was removed, the follicles were already dead so it was only a matter of time before it fell out. Upon opening the body cavity, we found the sample DNA had spread quicker than expected. We removed one of the lungs, the other only seems to be needed for speech now. Chlorophyll is producing oxygen which goes directly into the bloodstream, at the same time absorbing Co2. We could not have anticipated the body adjusting so well... It is worrying that her brain chemistry has changed drastically. Plant tissue has completely taken over and we cannot predict what effect it will have on her thinking, nonetheless brain activity is high and she is very much alive. The entire digestive system was removed, along with 60% of her other organs. All has been replaced with various plantlike structures. The changes are quite visible from the outside, she resembles a human with green skin and yellow eyes, but leaves and vine like tendrils are growing out from her skin.

Veronica entered the chamber, guided by two technicians. What little doubt she felt at that moment were too late to change, she thought. Difference, she reflected on her way to the Aperture installation, meant restrained freedom.

But who was she to profit of freedom, when she, and thousands, if not millions of her peers, grown from the lower levels of society, lived a surviving life, unable to enjoy the real life paraded in the medias?

She unclothed, slowly, placing her white sterile blouse away as the next team of technicians began to work in cleaning her body with a powerful jet of water followed by gas. She felt so pure for the first time of her life, and so cold, too, in this uniform colored world...

She lied down on a bed. Out of intimacy, they tried to keep the teams mostly female crewed for her, although at that point, she didn't really care. Everyone here acted as if she was a lab rat.

Lab rats, however, were better treated - and better respected than the poor living off the scraps from a starport.

First injection, modified genetic sequence through serum.
She was put to sleep, and the rest, proceeded as she was unconscious.

--

It is strange to wake up after a forceful, artificial sleep. As if unknown amount of hours, or even days, have been snatched away from you.

Veronica blinked slightly, and looked at herself. She was covered in a white medical blanket, in the same room she was, but there were no scientists or equipments. Only the glass windows in one of the wall - with no one behind for now, a table, with a datapad inserted within, and a door - locked, she could tell.

She stood up, mindless of her nudity, and walked closer to the table with the datapad. The screen indicated only an hour lapsed. A glass of water awaited her next to the machine, and she gulped it down gladly. Refreshing.

She shivered a bit, turning back to examining herself. Her body was just the same. Her mind seemed to function just the same.

She took these notes down on the datapad, feeling somewhat awkward in this silent world of sterility, trying to keep her mind busy from the loneliness.

For the moment, she still felt no noticeable sign of genetic modification, yet.
