I noticed somewhere that you could buy cargo pods but I don't know if that effects cargo space.

the only thing cargo pods do is absorb shots.
point of interest, the more expensive cargo pods do not have stronger armour.

Indeed, it does give you the ability to customize the look and feel of your trader, although...
I like what Unselie brought up - would it be possible to create different kinds of cargo pods with different armour capacities ??
