Low Profile Video Cards - Zelot - 07-05-2010

So my gaming rig finally bit the dust. 5 Bios beeps = processor problem which is beyond my ability to work with. So that leaves me with my HP slimline low profile pc. Its not terrible, but it needs some help to be able to run games decently. So, the first thing I need is a low profile video card, any suggestions?

First off, what computer do you have? Since it is a HP computer I suppose you could tell us what model it is.
Here are your three probably best bets for an upgrade.

First, the 5570 (review) is what I'd most likely take
in your case, as pre-built computers rarely have a lot of headroom on the power supply (wattage) or the chassis (cooling).
It doesn't require a lot of power and has a TDP (Thermal Design Profile) of 42.7 watts, and should therefore run on pretty much anything that has a PCIe port.

The second alternative is the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...14162030]9600GT (review):
It runs hotter, requires more power and is better than the 5570, and the low profile version of the card is quite expensive.
It'd perhaps be the best choice if you'd be willing to pay for the extra performance and you have a power supply and
chassis that is good enough.

The third alternative is pretty much the best low profile graphics card on the market, the 9800GT (review), but requires a lot of power,
and therefore also a six-pin extra power connector to the graphics card. Its cooler also takes up two slots in the chassis and might be a problem.

If you have the power supply.
(I'm guessing proboblly not because its a HP but what the hell.)

Sparkle has a low profile GTS 250.
Can handle any game at full HD provided you have the other specs to back it up.
450w (30amps on 12v) and one 6pin cable needed though.

If you dont have the PSU capable, I would go with Errors suggestion.
5570 is your best bet. If you decide on the 5570 I would Wait.
Wait for the GDDR5 version later this month. Currently only the GDDR3 version is out and the GDDR5 memory can make a difference and puts it closer to the 5670 in performance.

I have 5570 on my mini-itx work PC, it's a very decent low budget video card. Low profile, doesn't require extra power cable and don't go blazing heat unlike some of that type. Overall I'm quite satisfied with it's performance (both in XP and Linux). And there is overclocking potential there too, if you're into that.

p.s. I don't know if it's common but I had a little unpleasant surprise with it on Linux - it doesn't work with opensource radeon drivers at all (screen goes blank), you may need to use proprietary drivers, they work alright.

Well, thanks for the Info, but my brother the engineer decided to bring me a card today, seems like a pretty mean sob. Asus ENGT220, it's got a gig of onboard memory, a nice fan, and HDI, HDMI, and SVGA outputs. My computer is running a bit hotter, but not prohibitively so, and it' 100 degrees outside so it should be fine.
