When Immortals Die - r3vange - 07-24-2010 Silence...a small drop of sweat down his neck...her face in front of him...eyes widening...a small gasp...for eternity ***
Immortal...the nickname the crew of the dreadnought gave him, but he preferred the far less dramatic one: Jason Donovan. He never thought of himself like a super hero due to one simple reason- he wasn't. He knew exactly what he was, cannon fodder just like every other soul aboard the "LNS-Boston Bay" at the moment. One thing for instance that he could not protect himself from was the morning wake alarm exactly at 6:30 central Manhattan time. His right arm unwillingly passed over the entire bunk, filling him with the poisonous feeling that he was alone...alone. A painful whisper "Lora" came out of his mouth...but he as alone. It wasn't always like that, once upon a time there were the hopes and illusions, the dream. In the past there was she. Dreams...dreams one step away from turning into a nasty nightmare, and a neon sign hanging above their heads that disaster will happen. It was 7 years ago, the sun was rising over the skyscrapers of Manhattan, the air the reflection the atmosphere their armored transport, her hair, all pure gold. Gold just like the glow of the photons being released when the trade lane broke up. Gold just like the designation of the Rouge fighter in front of them. Gold just like the plasma bolt that penetrated the cockpit and passed 3 inches away from Jason's head but instead hit her in the neck completely separating her head. Gold...what an ugly thing. The sound of the crew relief siren snapped Jason from his trip down the memory lane. In just five minutes he was in his uniform and in the briefing room. There were 15 pilots plus the CAG Steven Jacobs. "Alright listen up pilots, today you will be patrolling! What a surprise you did it just 250 times this month surely you didn't expect it" said the CAG in his usual ironic manner then continued "We do not expect the Rhienlanders to cause any troubles today, I will lead Red squadron,Donovan you will assume command of Gold squadron". "Yes sir!" Jason made a grimace ...gold he hated that color! " Alright people suit up, take off in 45 minutes" That was more than enough time to prepare, Jason got to his locker and started putting his flight suit on when he felt a tender hand on his back, he turned around and saw a good looking girl around her mid 20's. "Hey looks like I'll watch your back today, eh Donovan?" The girl smiled "You better watch yours first Smith" Donovan answered with irritation in his voice "I will don't worry though calling Sam will be a nice touch" "Any reason why you are here" Jason zipped his flying jacket looked at Samantha and asked "Well I was...uhm thinking perhaps we could go for a drink in the bar together after the patrol" said Sam quite embarrassed. "I don't think it's a good idea, I will be quite tired besides I don't like "going out" in my off duty time" Jason explained "Oh...well I understand, see you in space then" Sam looked down waved and left. "You are such a bloke Immortal! You survive 100 battles, engagements outnumbered 15 to 1, dreadnoughts blowing up, and yet you cannot see that this girl likes you! And boy is it obvious!" One of the pilots suiting up next to Donovan said while shaking his head "What are you talking about? She can't like me I mean why should she" said Jason quite puzzled "You have to open up to people a bit more, I know some bad things happened to you but loosen up a bit it's been a long time since then, right?" The pilot added "I am just a bit afraid...but that's none of your business, come to think of it" "Ha! You are so busy feeling sorry for yourself that you fear what will happen if you feel happy for a change! A scared Immortal...pathetic" The pilot said with raised voice and left the locker room. Immortal...somehow right now he didn't feel like it. Too afraid not to get hurt in such way again too afraid to live. This war...the NAVY all driven by lust for revenge against those who caused him that pain, not just the ones that murdered Lora but everyone every single being in Sirius for not understanding his pain. Immortal...one that has been fighting all this time with his own mental barricades. To be fair to himself he didn't like Samantha but the fact that somebody cared for him and he remained blind to it sent cold chills down his spine. Several minutes later Jason was in the cockpit of his Guardian waiting for the green light. When the light was given the fighters dropped out of the hangar bay their wings extending completing the graceful shape of an eagle ready to take on the universe to protect Liberty. Space felt like home and yet a place he didn't belong. behind him the shape of LNS-Boston Bay started to blend in with the darkness. It was his playground now... "Gold 3 to Gold 1" A fuzzy voice sounded in his comm helmet "Gold 1 here, what is it" "This is Gold 3 the patrol route is plotted, ready whenever you are, sir" The voice crackled again "Gold 1 here, very well, proceed. All fighters readiness check!" Donovan gave the order quickly "Gold 4 here, all systems green engaging monitoring indicators on your holo HUD now" "This is Gold 3 all systems check, HUD indicators activated" Gold 2-Samantha stayed silent but her indicator lit up on Jason's screen, he now knew why she was silent. Donovan engaged private comms to Gold-2 and said with calm a bit uncertain voice "I...just want to apologize, I was quite rude in the locker room" "You've got nothing to apologize for. I was just silly thinking something like that, I was out of place." Sams voice filled his helmet. "I....you are not the problem Sam, you are a fine girl you will find someone, I am just not letting other people come close to me that's all." Jason said after he took a deep breath "What happened, what could possibly cause an Immortal so much pain" "The inability to die when he has to" Jason said with his eyes wetting "Me and my girl...we were about to get married on planet Los Angelis, but Instead for marriage celebrations I got there for a funeral. Her funeral" Samantha made a quick gasp "Oh...I didn't know...I'm sorry I don't know what to say" "You don't have to say anything, I am not worth it I do not deserve to be here while thousands that should be aren't. I am not a good person Sam" Jason almost shouted in the comm set. "I think you are worth it Immortal. I think you are a wonderful man, one who can care greatly for the he lov.........." Sam's transmission ended suddenly in static startling Jason, milliseconds later his fighter shook violently from a shock wave. Samantha's HUD indicator turned red then displayed "TRM"...TRM...Terminated. Gold leader looked over his shoulder and saw a missile trail leading to a gaping hole where the cockpit once was. "This is Gold 3!!! Gold 2 down, Gold 2 down!" the voice of the pilot sounded like a desperate cry followed by a panic over the communication frequencies. "4 Here, seven jerry Valkyries de-cloaking, Orders ,sir???" Another panicked voiced shouted "Weapons free, weapons free!" Donovan shouted the orders. Immortal...yet again it wasn't him, fate decided to spare him once more. Even further-proved his theory about attachments and pain. Human life was far too cheap to allow him to put price tags as "I love you" or "you are my friend" on it. Soldiers die and the loss is a feeling of being cheated for the price you've set. Donovan swiftly fired a his guns on the nearest incoming Valkyrie disrupting the shields then quickly launching a missile which separated the fighter in half. Seconds after the indicator of Gold 4 displayed "TRM" "This is the LNS Boston Bay. We've got a Rhienlander dreadnought and a cruiser zeroing in on our position reserve fighters launch! "Gold 3 here! Sir the situation's FUBAR! If we don't do something we are toast before the reserve fighters get here!" In that moment a large explosion flashed in the distance "LNS- Boston Bay here we've got heavy damage on the lower decks hangar bay lost pressure, the doors are jammed! So much for the reserved fighter, they are burning alive we all will!" A bridge officer shouted over the comm link apparently loosing his sanity. Having disabled 2 enemy fighters Jason engaged a third one when voice of his only remaining squadron mate sounded again "Sir, Red squadron is done for! A gunboat wiped them clean!" Donovan thought for a second then gave the order "Listen up, full speed out of here and leave a trail of countermeasures so they can't stop you I will slow them down" "But Sir that's a death sentence! You can't ta..." Gold 3 was interrupted by Jason screaming "Don't go all melodramatic on me, get the hell out of here! I didn't get my nickname for no reason! Get out!" Gold 3 didn't wait for another second , his cruise engines engaged and he flew away to safety. Donovan was alone now, while being chased by 3 fighters he retreated back to the Boston Bay only to find the ship being massacred by the Rhiendlander capital ships. A heavy mortal blast separated the frontal "razor edge" of the liberty dreadnought spilling dead bodies like doll in a perverse puppet show. Another blast hit the reactor, and in less than 7 seconds from that the Boston Bay evaporated. Donovan could count no more than 2 lifeboats in space...out of 32. Now he was truly alone, with the things he wanted. A reason a target a license to kill and no one left to mourn for him. "Let's see if they named you that way for a reason, Immortal" he said to himself. He quickly destroyed another fighter but then the gun boat zeroed in on his position forcing him to break off his attacks...Immortal, he fought like one...One of the Valkyries flew past him hitting him with a red plasma bolt coming from the Mini Razor cannon- the red death. The blast completely fried the shields he didn't have defenses not...Immortals do not need to defend...And indeed he didn't swiftly rotating the fighter and returning the favor to the enemy...Immortals do not fear death...Jason fought for another 3 minutes before the cruiser got in range as well..."Prepare to die Gold leader" a voice with heavy German accent said. "Gold...what an ugly thing" Jason thought Immortals sometimes die just like the rest of us, but they remain Immortal... The cruiser fired a salvo or rockets that were dead on target. Silence-[color=#C0C0C0]time was flowing in slow motion a small drop of sweat down his neck-[color=#C0C0C0]seeing the missiles coming closer her face in front of him-there in front one of the missiles coming to him eyes widening-Lora a small gasp- before the scorching heat disintegrated his fighter exposing him to the vacuum, his eyes frozen to glass.
