Hillbilly - Stoat - 11-05-2007

Born and raised in a quiet backwater on Denver, William Blue Wainwright was an unremarkable child. The 6th son of a family of 13, he ducked school, ran riot and quickly earned a reputation for petty criminality.

What was noted was a dedication to his family which leaned towards psychosis. He came to see himself as the protector of his siblings and cousins, and would seek bloody revenge on anyone that attacked his family either verbally or physically.

His preference would be to use some possession of the perceived wrong-doer to inflict his revenge. He is quite prepared to spend extensive amounts of time and effort in order to carry out his revenge in what he believes to be a suitable fashion.

Examples include the beating to death of local landowner Jean LaGyarde, his wife and three young children, with Jeans own silver cane, for the attempted seizure of Wainwright family land and for calling Paw Wainwright a low down, dirty, moonshine running scumbag (it is unclear as to which was considered the greater crime in Williams eyes), and the hit and run deaths of Grame Carty, Hank George and Billy-Bob Thorn for the bullying of Williams younger sister, Elly.

The surface transport used in the incident had originally belonged to Hank Georges father, but was purchased by William using a fake identity and money made from the dealing of Cardamine to rich school children at an exclusive school some 30 miles from the Wainwright small-holdings. It is believed that William obtained the Cardamine by skimming an amount from the monthly supply that was sent through to his Aunt Maybelline, who has been an addict for the past 25 years.

These two extreme reactions happened by the age of 17, although the authorities were never able to press charges due to the lack of surviving witnesses and various members of the extensive Wainwright family always providing alibis for the volatile young man. These are by no means the only atrocities carried out by William, but are the only ones that the authorities are fairly sure lie at Williams feet.

Paw Wainwright is a known associate of the Outcast and Junker factions operating within the Colorado system, taking payment in the form of monthly deliveries of Cardamine for his sister Maybelline, a long time addict. Increasingly worried that the actions of his son would soon come back to haunt the family, he arranged for his son (at the age of 19) to start working on a Junker ship. Williams cousin, James Masters, was 1st mate aboard the ship and was given the unenviable task of keeping William under control. As it turned out, William revelled in the freedom he now found, and his more anti-social behaviours receded. After 10 years William was captain of his own ship and along with James flew frequent missions from the Rochester and Beaumont bases. But Williams new-found happiness was not to last.

Engaged in a daring raid on Planet Hamburg, James Masters ship was shot down by the Rheinland authorities. James was able to escape back to Texas, but a deal struck between the Rheinland police and the LSF meant that James was shortly recaptured and shipped off to Planet Hamburg for trial. It was at this time that Williams more unsavoury side began to re-assert itself.

Upon hearing of his cousins recapture he immediately took off to Rheinland space, determined to break him out. His first attempt ended badly, his CSV being completely outclassed by the Rheinlander police vessels around Planet Hamburg. Badly damaged, and smarting from the beating, he barely managed to escape, fleeing deep into Rheinland territory. Eventually he made it to Kreutzberg depot and was able to get his battered ship repaired.

During the trial of James Masters, William began planning a more daring raid to free his cousin. Pirating the trade lanes of New Berlin and Dresden swiftly provided the necessary finances to purchase and outfit a Crow heavy fighter from the Red Hessians at Vogtland, a ship suitable for the attempt that was to come.

James Masters was convicted of criminal damage, attempted grand larceny and GBH for his part in the raid on Planet Hamburg, and taken for holding at Vierlande prison, pending sentencing.

Liberal distribution of funds to the various factions passing through Kreutzberg soon provided William with the date and time that James Masters was to be shipped from Vierlande back to Planet Hamburg for sentencing.

Laying in wait within the Sudheide asteroid field, Williams long range scanners soon picked up the police convoy. William leapt to the attack, relying on brute force rather than surprise. The ferocity of his attack broke the police forces and he was able to get his cousin off the disabled transport before the police reinforcements arrived. He then battled his way to the trade lanes, opting for speed of escape, and headed back for Liberty space. Breaking his way through police and military forces at Altona and Planet Hamburg, he was finally intercepted by the RNC Weser. Suffering a broadside from the gunboat as he entered the jumpgate to the Bering system all but finished him, the ship somehow holding together.

Freeport 2 refused access to their facilities, so William headed for Planet Houston in the Texas system. A risky move considering the previous agreement between the LSF and the Rheinland police, and so it proved as he was intercepted only 3k from the Houston docking ring. Desperately trying to hold his failing ship together, he was unable to avoid the attentions of Guardian pilot Sam Hurrell. Williams ship was destroyed, William barely able to eject the escape pod in time.

A passing Junker ship tractored in the pod before the LSF could locate it. William survived, having sustained horrific injuries, but his cousin, James Masters, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Beaumont base.

It took William six months to recover sufficiently to leave Beaumont, and when he did, he vowed not to return to Liberty until he was able to take his revenge upon the LSF for killing James. Local legend on Beaumont base told of him scouring Sirius, hunting for fabled weapons lost in battle, and a ship worthy of his rage.

That was two years ago. Rumour now tells of Williams return with a ship named Hillbilly.

......***bzzzt*** Are we on?

This is Richard Hargreaves reporting exclusively from the fabled Montezuma Base in the Cortez system. Dragged from my house at three this morning, I had been 'summoned' by William Wainwright to enable him to tell some of his story. I was unsure what to expect. Here of follows a recording our conversation.

So William….. Is it okay to call you William?

**Blue'll do yeh jus' fine, feller.

Right, er.., Blue. So what was it you wanted me to relay to the people of Liberty

**Weeell, ah's'a jus' wantin ter clear up sum stuff that ah've herd while ah's bin back. Yer see, ah's bin hearin tha ah's'a bin getting a real bad name fer me'sel lately, an it seems ter me that folks needs ter know whuts really goin on. Ah ain't no threat to the ordinry folks aroun. Ah aint gut no quar'l wi 'em me'sel. Ah's jus here ter make sure them damn LSF remember that they aint jus gunna git away wi' whut they's dun. They kill't mah cuzin! He di'n have a chance, yer see. The jus shot first an di'n worry bout the consequences. Well, ah's ere ter make sure they know there's consequences ter their actions, and they's gunna pay fer em. Ter ME!! Ah ain't sure how, an ah aint sure when, but them as did it'll pay. All 'o 'em. An anyone what trys ter stop meh'll pay 'n'all. However long it takes. Ah's got the rest've meh life ter git em all.

So, let me see if I've got this right. You are here solely to extract revenge for the killing of your cousin, a convicted felon, that you yourself broke out of a Rheinland prison. You still maintain that it was the LSF that handed your cousin over to the Rheinland military authorities, despite the current climate of tension between those two groups.

**Yeah, ah wuz there, remember? Ah know whut ah saw. An Jimmy weren’t so bad. We wuz jus tryin ter keep our famlys fed. They wuz gunna execute him! Jus fer tryin ter take sumin whut would’n be misst anyhows. Course ah broke him out. What wuz ah suppose t’do? Anyhow, like ah says, ordinary folks aint gut nuthin ter fear. Ah’s going fer the LSF. Ah’s gut one o’ em already.

I understand that you’ve lost a couple of ships in the process?

**Weeeel, ah’s’a still gettin use ter the darn thangs. It’s sum LSF prototype that ah cum across, an ah had the cash ter get it. Nuthin better than getting em back wi their own hardware, heh! But yeah, ah took a bit ‘o a beatin at first. There wuz a feller callt Chill first off. He dropt a nuke on meh, so ah wuz lucky ter get outta that ‘un. Mah contact wuz able ter get us anuther ship tho. Next ah wuz jumped by three or four o’ em outside a Riverside, y’know, in California? Ah gut one o em, wi a nuke n’all. Hah, that made meh fair howl!! But then the rest o’ em laid inter meh. Two LSF flyers an sum cruiser. Ah think they gut a lucky shot onna nuke as ah dropped an it kicked out mah pod. They thought they’d got the ship n’all, but Paw foun it driftin inter orbit roun Mojave an hauled it back. That were a’fore he pullt mah pod in tho. He wuz fair riled, ah’s’ll tell yer!! Callt meh all sorta names. Hah, he soon changed his tune when ah tolt him whut ah wuz doin. He hault meh back ter Rochester and we fixed up Hillbilly good. That’s mah ship, Hillbilly. Hah hah hah, they all thinks ah’s sum kinda inbred cos’ve that. Ah’s’ll be telling yer, anyone else as trys that’ll be gettin a rite kickin an no mistake. Anywho, it were yesterday ah gut a tipoff that the boss o’ the LSF wuz in California. So ah heads rite o’er there. There wuz jus im an sum ship callt Gladiater, or sumsuch, so ah foun em an took em on. Damn, those little ships’re fast. They give us a right pastin till ah gut mah hed roun how ter fight ‘em. Ah wuz jus about holdin out agin em, an ah’d damn near taken out the LSF bossman, when sum cruisers and other ships turnt up. Theys’d callt in more troops ah guess, so ah hightailed it outta there fast as ah could. Ah’s lost one o’ these ‘Claws already an ah caint afford ter lose anuther cos mah source’s run dry. If ah mess up agin mah ship’s gone fer good. Ah’s’ll have ter get sum other ship an ah wanna get em in this un. Ah’m gunna ram Hillbilly down their stinkin throats till they choke. At least ah saw this on mah comms unit afore ah gut here.

**Ah caint see as he’ll be dead, there wuz too many LSF ships around ter miss his pod, but ah reckons ah owes Sam White a drink. Yer hear me Sam White? Here’s to yer feller.

And that was it. I was hauled out of the Base and bundled onto this docked trading ship, which I understand is about to depart for New York. I am happy to say that I am unharmed, and hope to remain so. I feel certain that had he meant me harm I would be long dead already. I have a feeling I have not seen the last of this man.

Hillbilly - Stoat - 01-04-2008

This is Richard Hargreaves reporting again, on a night of surprises......... for this reporter at least. Not 10 minutes ago I received word about William "Blue" Wainwright. It seems he was shot down in a battle with some members of the LSF and SA in the Texas system some short time ago. Reports are somewhat confused at the current time, bit it seems that no escape pod was located by the security forces during the encounter. Further information will be made available as and when it comes to my attention.

Hillbilly - Stoat - 01-04-2008

This is Richard Hargreaves on board the CNS Bloodhound, reporting for the Colony News Service from the site of a reputedly large fire-fight yesterday, involving the LSF, the SA, the Liberty Rogues, a number of mercenaries and pirates and the infamous William Wainwright, aka Hillbilly.

As you can see through this window, the wrecks of several ships are scattered across a large area, but some markings and ship types are still easily discernable. We have so far discovered the remains of at least one LSF fighter, although the LSF themselves are refusing to comment on suggestions that several of their own fighters were shot down in a number of engagements with criminal parties within the Texas system yesterday. There also appears to be the remnants of an SA ship or two, again no comment has been forthcoming from the SA, a Corsair gunboat, what appears to be a Corsair bomber, though this is still to be confirmed, and the Ravens Claw previously flown by the fugitive, Wainwright. The area is heavily irradiated, suggesting the use of nuclear mines, though whether by the criminals or Liberty forces is, of course, impossible to ascertain.

We can confirm that the escape pod from the Claw has definitely been deployed, but there is no indication at the present time as to whether it, and its passenger, was picked up by the security forces after the engagement. So it would seem, for the moment at least, that Hillbilly is still at large, although currently without a ship.

Wait, Im getting a message from our reporter on the Junker base, Beaumont, that Hillbillys escape pod has just been flown in. Yes, apparently he is unharmed, miraculous considering what remains of his ship. This will no doubt prove a thorn in the side for the LSF at least. I will be attempting to get a comment from LSF command over the next few hours, but considering their past reticence, I do not hold much hope.

Apologies for the break in story at this time but there appears to have been an incident on Beaumont. I will now pass you over to our reporter on the base, Jeff Lawson. Go ahead Jeff.

Thank you Richard. This is Jeff Lawson and Im standing in the launch bay of Beaumont base where, not 5 minutes ago, a young man had his ship stolen from him, by none other than William Wainwright, as he was disembarking on Beaumont. Sir? Sir? Can you tell us what happened, sir?

Weeeell, Id just docked an wuz about ter head fer Ruby's, fer a beer you unnerstand, when this feller comes up next ter me an he says, all polite like, Dont cause no trouble, Bubba, jus gimme the control keys ter yer ship an ahsll no be stickin yer with this ere knife. Now how he knows my name is Bubbas beyond me, but I aint no hero, yer unnerstand? So I just give im the control codes ter me ship. Anyways, he opens the airlock an then cracks me cross the back o my head. When I came roun my ships gone. Goddam SOB!! Ill have a headache fer a week, not ter mention what the wifell be sayin when she finds out.

So, there it is, another remarkable twist in this story. The Hillbilly is back in space, albeit in a starflier, barely ten minutes after being rescued himself. No doubt we shall be hearing of him again soon. Back to you, Richard.

Thanks you, Jeff. So there you have it. It would appear there are few, if any, depths to which Hillbilly is not prepared to sink in order to pursue his vendetta against the security forces for what he considers the murder of his cousin, all those months ago. I shall be reporting any further incidents as and when they occur.

The question remains as to what at least two Corsair built ships were doing this far into Liberty space. This will surely require quick and decisive action from the Government for a change, and I, for one, will be pressing them for a response to this latest threat to our security.

This has been Richard Hargreaves reporting for the Colony News Service. For now, back to Jenna in the studio..

Thank you, Richard. Next, how your finances are under threat of seizure by the Interstellar Bank of Credit. But first, these messages from our sponsor..
