FL on a Flash drive - Corsair - 09-15-2010

So, I was talking about running FL on a flash drive with some folks the other day. I realize that there's a registry issue with accounts not being saved on a flash drive. So, has anybody tried locating those account registry files, saving them to a .reg, and putting it on the flash drive with the game install? It would be pretty cool to play in a Library.

Add FLAM to the flash drive, and then save a backup of your accounts into an ADF file, and put that on the flashdrive.

Although most library computers are pretty locked down registry wise, so access to the registry, whether with .reg files, or via FLAM's usage of the Windows API, might not work.

Furthermore, remember that if the library computer isn't locked down registrywise, and you store your account data into its registry database to play, it will be accessible by anyone unless you remember to remove the info before leaving the computer.

The registry entries I believe can be tossed into HKCU instead of HKLM, which is usually less restricted. Not sure if FLAM can accomplish this though...

Also, expect severe loading times while jumping, launching or loading the game if you're loading off of flash drives. They have better access times, but crap burst transfer rates.

yep, Also, bear in mind that Flash drives have a limited amount of read write cycles, in which you're going to burn it out if you use it to play a game, especially if you're constantly saving to it.

I'd just dunk 30$ into a cheap 20GB 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive, put it in a enclosure, and use it like that

To be on topic, however, I'd jsut write down your FL-ID and punch it in whenever you change pcs. Once its in on that pc, unless its reformatted, it should stay.

Freelancer doesn't use HKLM at all, it's all done on the user hive. As for the files, it would be best to transfer it all onto the system drive if possible. In England, the only directory with write access on library networks is My Documents, although there will likely be a quota and the policies may differ between local authorities.

A quota would indeed make perfect sense, I share my pc with my brothers and family and I told them I didnt want my hard drive burned out, so I set a high quota on my disks. They've never maxed them out, but its still there just incase.

But yes, you're absolutely right, a hard disk, or a device connected through ESata would be the best option for a directory to install applications.

I DID, however, install Disco to a DVD RAM, and although it works, the disk drive annoys me while reading and load times went from 5 seconds to 2 minutes.

Possible, yes, probable, not really.

i found a neat thing with the disco mod, if you copy the files onto a USB stick.
1. activate the disco mod with freelancer mod manager and change to money and starting system .etc
2. then copy the whole game file (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games) remember the disco mod MUST BE ACTIVE when you copy it.
3. run the freelancer .exe file and disco freelancer will start up.

side note: to anyone wondering multiplayer will work. but if you want your save files look in the freelancer folder (C:\Documents and Settings\Jordan Clark\My Documents\My Games) and copy that freelancer folder but remember to rename the folder on the USB stick just to save confusion.
