If you're going for subs ... they're a different breed of people, that's for darned sure. ASW techs aren't nearly as strange.

Couple of key points regarding the Navy. Once you get past the first couple of ratings, promotions only come when there is a vacancy. That's opposed to in the Army, where pretty much once you get time in grade, you're going to get promoted, presuming you've passed your Qualification Tests.

Another thing is that they've made basic back into what it was in the day - not quite the kinder, gentler stuff of the 90's - since that tended to get more people killed.

Key thing is to be informed before you show up, and to pay attention. Your Drill Instructors aren't being personal about their abuse of you - they're trying to help you learn how to stay alive when the fecal matter hits the rotary oscillating device. Say you're on a destroyer, and someone starts to come alongside with a rubber boat filled with boxes. What do you do? Or you're on a CVN, it's the middle of the night, you're doing air-ops but off shift, and suddenly the lights go out and fire breaks out because a plane came in too hot and heavy and crashed on the deck.
