Sounds to me like that card is broken. Maybe it has some temperature problems, even with the cooler working, maybe it's running too slowly or there is a gap between the cooler and the graphics chip.
When you make a screenshot, are the lines also on the picture?
If you don't want to play the latest games with all the best effects, the 4850 should be more than enough.

I recognize these faults - your graphics card has bad video memory on it. Since those memory banks aren't replaceable you will need to replace your video card. Until you do, you will continue to have corruption, and occasional crashes, especially in 3D intensive applications (such as games). I've had a X1950 go the same way.

Replacing it with a 4850 should be fine for Freelancer.

Artifacts, your card is overheating or a component is failing.
I'm afraid you'll have to replace it.

Video memory is gone.

Solution: New graphics card.

Suggestion: I have a 4850 x2 and I can play all the games out there at very high graphics (including Starcraft 2 etc even on Battle.net)

You can buy that card for a pretty low price considering that 5xxx series are out there.

Old card option:
Jarek 2 questions what kind of Power Supply do you have?
And about your Video card slot it is PCIe right?
There is a option that if your Power Supply is weak to have the same problems with the new card.
You still can fix your own card, try to dissemble it and clean it, change the GPU chip thermal paste add one new fan in the case or on the card if old one is broken and try again.
For the paste how to- http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/392860-how...rmal-paste.html
Add this -http://blog.orbmu2k.de/sidebar-gadgets/gpu-observer-sidebar-gadget and check your GPU temps there is a big chance that you have bad cooling thats why you would have problems with the card.
If you are with XP download this- http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
Post the temps under idle and load here.
Final option to save your old card is to bake it:
http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-ge...d-oven-fix.html
It works but please find someone with good English to help you ok?

New card option:
If your PSU is weak the new card would make the same problems so be careful there.
The best choose is to buy 5770 new, if you dont have the money , 4850 will do the job, but I would not buy second hand before I can test it.
4850 x2
Good card but tooks many Power from the PSU and it is too hot.
